goggles99··on David Cameron's Internet porn filter is the start of censorship creep
Look, I am against censorship of the internet - but a line has to be drawn somewhere. The internet is ubiquitous. Four year old kids can surf the web proficiently these days and easily get to hardcore porn by accident. That is by design of pornography marketers.

The porn industry blew it. They shamelessly market to kids. anything to get them interested/hooked. Do you think that they would get away with putting porno mags on the lower shelves of toy isles?

There are laws to keep tobacco companies from marketing to kids. There are a slew of laws which prevent marketing all sorts of things to kids. How is the gist of this any different.

I agree that this should have been done in a different way. Each ISP potentially having a different blacklist is ridiculous. The organization and execution could have been a lot better. An exemption list should be standard across ISP's rather than only offered by a few and not shared (exemption list where say an actual sex ed site with an approved/compliant password protection and validation system for people to use to sign up for it is Not Blocked by default if it's owner registers it)

BTW, those of you who say that parents could install filters locally to block this content are out of touch. These filters need constant updating or the fuzzy logic is very poor. Today, most kids today are more computer savvy than their parents. They easily get around these filters, anyway what about smart phones and tablets? What about friends houses? Unfiltered internet devices are ubiquitous. Putting a filter on your home PC would be like putting a band-aid on a severed limb to stop the bleeding.

I wish there were a better way besides censorship. Anyone have any ideas?

goggles99··on How Scarcity Trap Affects Our Thinking, Behavior
>BYLINE: Each September the state of Massachusetts asks one thing from "Scarcity" author and Harvard economist, Sendhil Mullainathan, to renew his car inspection sticker and each year this recipient of the MacArthur Genius Award does the same thing. He's really busy, so on each day leading up to the expiration of the sticker, he tells himself he'll attend to it the next day.

This guy has a serious logic flaw in his way of thinking. It scares me that there are people out there teaching economics in supposedly prominent schools.

It was not scarcity that affected his thinking. It was his irresponsibility. By scarcity of time, the author is including things like watching television, writing a book on the side, ETC. This is a simple case of procrastination.

These are optional things in the same way that someone with a meager income can live in relative comfort in America (never go hungry, wet or cold), Then they decide to buy a fancy new car (though nothing was wrong with their older model Honda). Now they have created a scarcity because they suddenly cannot afford to pay their rent.

It was not the scarcity that affected their thinking and behavior, it was self indulgence and irresponsibility that caused the scarcity if the first place.

goggles99··on Colorado Stores Throw Open Their Doors to Pot Buyers
It will be very interesting to see the numbers in the next 5 years. Numbers of those who smoke pot vs who don't. Lets see how successful financially each group are. How much they contribute to society. It will also be interesting to see which group goes further in school or their career. Which group turns out more long term "happy" people. Which group breaks more laws ETC.

I already know the answers to all of these questions, but it will interesting to see it become a provable, statistical reality.

goggles99··on Why I no longer contribute to Stack Overflow
Nothing is perfect, Stack Overflow is a great resource online. Of course it has a few quirks and problems, but why try to bring it down by publicly quitting it and seemingly trying to bring others with you. Quietly leave. Making a noise like this leads me to believe the problem is more with you than SO.

Arguments could be made against contributing to... Helping the homeless, Open source, Hacker News discussions, ? ETC

goggles99··on Steam Removes Game 'Order Of War: Challenge' From User Libraries
FYI, When someone says "Windows" they generally are talking about a PC desktop. Not a phone version.

I am guessing that you probably already know this, but want to push any angle for a rebuttal.

I am referring to Windows 8 specifically (yes the PC version) because this is the version that Steam was vying as evil.

goggles99··on Steam Removes Game 'Order Of War: Challenge' From User Libraries
LOL... steam and all their holier than thou blog posts about being open and better than Microsoft - That was never anything more than a rant about the Windows 8 built in app market that they were afraid would undercut their profits and dominance (a scheme against competition). They are neither open nor respect rights of ownership. AFAIK, Microsoft themselves have never forcefully removed an app from Windows in this manner.

goggles99··on UK Porn filters block sex education websites
What determines an Educational Site as you have stated that they should not require big brother's approval? Anyone can say their site is "Educational".

Calling BishUK an educational site is how this story even broke daylight. The term Educational site is very misleading in this context IMO. I suppose that you can call hardcore porn educational as well though (if you learn something from watching it then you were educated right?).

Traditional "Sex Education" in school is all about discussing the basics of how anatomy works and the responsibilities and consequences that come along with sexual activity.

BishUK appears to go much further. Discussing in detail sexual positions, techniques ETC. Hardly what most people think of when they hear the term "Education" and hardly appropriate for kids.

goggles99··on UK Porn filters block sex education websites
They are blocked because they didn't file for (or were denied) an exemption. Everyone was told for some time now about this. If they were denied, it is because a three year old could access adult material there (no verification of any type). Where are these facts in the article?

It is likely they didn't comply to generate a reaction like many of the comments in this thread.

goggles99··on Qualcomm Insider: Apple 64-Bit Chip `Hit Us in the Gut'
Typical Apple fanboi downvotes without rebuttal or explanation.
goggles99··on Qualcomm Insider: Apple 64-Bit Chip `Hit Us in the Gut'
>* Apple dominates the high end, and is at 0% of the low (some might say junk) end.*

Where did you get the idea that Apple dominates at the high end? They haven't for a while now.

The Galaxy S4 was outselling the iPhone 5 all by itself for several months (before the 5s came out). The collective of high end Androids have taken over the high end market on a seemingly permanent basis. Apple is at less than 50% and is on a steady decline vs the (high end) Android collective of phones.

goggles99··on Qualcomm Insider: Apple 64-Bit Chip `Hit Us in the Gut'
>c - After lots of thinking I agree with Apple. Current form factor is just right for communication device [1].

All that thinking got you one vote - unfortunately for apple, most votes want a bigger phone (the numbers don't lie).

>If you need bigger screen, chances are you do not want a phone - you want a tablet.

So now people buying larger phones don't really know what they want? This is typical, flawed Apple superiority complex thinking.

Who wants to carry a phone AND a tablet around (one in each pocket?) How is this even portable or feasible in most cases? No one wants to carry a tablet around with them everywhere they go. A larger phone is a logical compromise. Besides, economics is often the biggest decider. If someone really wants a tablet, but really needs a phone are they going to buy an iPhone AND an iPad? Can they even afford that? or can they really justify spending $1,000 for it when they can spend less than half of that for a well polished Android phablet?

goggles99··on Qualcomm Insider: Apple 64-Bit Chip `Hit Us in the Gut'
That advantage is running out. You can only have a new revolutionary product every 30 years (this 64 bit chip's effect is quite oversold in this article). See Mac vs PC in the 90s. Apple is still playing the same game (Expensive, Closed and non expandable Hardware, limited hardware choices, Lone Wolf, act alone mentality, not reacting to consumer's requests because they smugly always know best) Android has filled in the role of PC. The difference now is that there is no Steve Jobs leadership and cult following to bring Apple to prominence after this era fades.
goggles99··on Qualcomm Insider: Apple 64-Bit Chip `Hit Us in the Gut'
Android has basically been a three legged horse in the speed/performance because of the Dalvic runtime anyway. Who cares about 32/64 bits. When Android comes out with it's new java compilation model and runtime (ART) in version 5 and claims that your phone OS and apps can now execute twice as fast, where does that leave Apple in the performance race?

All of this does not really matter anyway. iPhone has always had better performance than almost every android phone. This has not saved them from losing massive market share. The PC/Mac history is repeating with Android/IOS.

goggles99··on Major US carriers announce principles for unlocking devices
Is this how you get to the top of a HN comment thread? by posting something totally ignorant?

Why is the text in your post not completely faded away yet? There must me more of your type around here than I thought.

Where was it said that if you unlock your subsidized phone that you no longer had to pay for it? The fact that it is subsidized means that you are under contract for it. Break the contract and what happens? You pay for the rest of the phone plus more in early termination fees. It's YOUR PHONE once you sign the contract and you are going to pay for it one way or another. Stop paying and you are going to have collection agencies stalking you, won't be able to register your car or get any type of credit, and your wages garnished.

Don't ever have pin stripes painted on that sports car you are paying off. Don't ever replace the flooring on the home you are mortgaging. Try logic sometime.

goggles99··on Invisible Child: Dasani’s Homeless Life
As much as I think that people should be free and hate the government telling people what to do, I sometimes wonder if a situation like this can only be prevented or alleviated by force.

Why do people like this keep having more and more kids (a freedom)? Birth control is free for them. Why doesn't this family move to a more affordable state or city (a freedom)? Why don't they move somewhere where they can find jobs (a freedom)? I don't care if their jobs are picking fruit or mopping floors, Illegal aliens live better than this. Why do they blow all their money as soon as they get it (a freedom)? They live rent free and make 33,000 in combined income. This is like the after tax incomes of someone making 40k+ a year. This is more money than my single income in-laws have (after they pay their taxes and the mortgage bill) with their 6 children and they are not living in poverty. They have a minivan, they go on vacations to Disney Land. Their kids have clean new looking clothes. They Are not malnourished or un-bathed. They suffer none of the plights that the family in this article do. Why? It is about choices.

I almost want the government to (I don't want to say it but) force people who have proven that they will never do the right thing to do just that.

I actually don't really want this loss of freedoms. There is a better way, but will it ever happen? How can you re-instill good standards and moral values in a selfish and morally bankrupt generation? Religious conviction used to fill the role of prompting parents to do the right thing, but now it is heavily watered down and in many cases gone altogether. Ever since good standards and moral values stopped being passed down from the majority of fathers and mothers (who rarely divorced back then by the way) things have been and will continue to get worse. Eventually things will get so bad that it will come down to people (like this family) losing their freedom (in essence a partial return to slavery) If they want to continue living off the government.

I was just thinking about the efforts in government to make minimum wage $10/hr nationally. Well now why would these parents go out and get jobs making $10/hr? they would have no more income than they get from welfare today. Plus now they have to go work 40hrs per week? Do you really thing that they would do this?

Mike Rowe was on CNN recently saying that there are over 100k job openings currently. Most of them are labor jobs that people just don't want (they are actually hard work imagine that). Many of them start at 40k per year yet still no one wants them. Well why would they? they get an equivalent of that much right now for doing nothing.

This country is in a downward spiral. This family is only a symptom of it.

goggles99··on Is it bad practice to use your real name online?
My point is that the ability exists to set contact info (as you have on Hacker News). This can include your real name or not. The contact info can include identifiable info or be some anonymous email account. The choice is left up to you.
goggles99··on Is it bad practice to use your real name online?
>1. It reminds me to be civil and think before I post.

This may be true but it inevitably makes you dishonest. There are things that you believe or feel about certain things that you will never post. These omissions equate to a lack of honesty (you are not voicing your full opinions)

The internet is one of the last places where people can say what they feel. Sure some are jerks about things but these people are just being honest. They really are jerks. They might hold it all inside when offline but this is because of sensitivity conditioning and political correctness. These things only hide the true problems of our society. Do you think that because racism is repressed by PC and an agenda of a few in places of power to impose swift public embarrassment and isolation those honest enough to express their opinion that it does not exist?

If anything, this exacerbates the problem. It is funny that many want to legalize drugs so that those with drug problems can come forward and receive help without being demonized, yet those same people just want people dealing with hatred and bigotry problems just to keep it inside until it eats them (and their lineage) alive.

>2. It makes it easier for other people reach out to me based on things I've posted (I have a fairly unique name).

This simply is not true. What forum or internet based messaging means today does not have email, twitter, Facebook ETC. where anyone who just read your info can contact you?

goggles99··on Why Isn't Open Source A Gateway For Coders Of Color?
Thanks for the reply. I meant no offense. The article uses the words people of color several times. I fail to see how using people of color and colored people are different. Sorry if this hurt your feelings.
goggles99··on Why Isn't Open Source A Gateway For Coders Of Color?
>I agree there are systemic issues of racism keeping blacks and latinos away from open source, but those issues have nothing to do with open-source per se. The free time issue is a big one. Access to computers at home in early childhood is probably even bigger.

You have been watching too much MSNBC. Young Blacks and Latinos watch 3-4 hours of television per day and play 2+ hours of video games. There goes your free time belief.

Access to computers and internet? Poor blacks compared to poor whites have the same resources to computers yet the poor whites become coders in the same percentages as the general population.

You are 0 for 2.

goggles99··on Why Isn't Open Source A Gateway For Coders Of Color?
>One of the spaces you might think would be a gateway for developers of color to enter the industry is through open source software development. You don't have to know somebody or have a degree in software engineering or get hired to participate in an open-source project. You can jump right in and start writing some code.

This sounds like the author is resigned to the fact that colored people don't go to college. Is that the premise of this article? What about the tiny percentage of colored college students why have any interest in software development?

>But in Haibel's experience, the open-source world is even whiter and more male than the world of proprietary software. "It's very clear that the open source community is whiter than the software community as a whole," she says.

Wait, this seems to imply that the fact that there aren't many women or colored coders is because the white men in charge refuse to hire them on this basis. This is in stark contrast to reality where the fact that is not mentioned here is that there is little or no interest to code from these groups.

>There are larger societal factors that contribute to the whiteness of the tech world, more broadly. Blacks and Latinos are more likely to attend under-resourced schools, they're underrepresented in math and science fields at every level of higher education and increasingly so the higher they go, and are less likely than whites to

This is such garbage. Blacks and Latinos in the same schools and in the same socioeconomic status as their White, Asian and Indian counter parts become coders at the same rates. Why do journalists always try to make everything about race unfairness?

There is no story here. Blacks and Hispanics aren't coders very often because they don't have ambition to do that. Wither it be cultural or genetic is not exactly known but it is not because they are disadvantaged. what is all this crap about them contributing to open source?

Would we ever see an article about how Indians and Persians are overrepresented in gas station and liquor store ownership (a very lucrative career) and how white people should do x to catch up? White people don't aspire to do that, end of (non) story.

goggles99··on German Patent Ruling Threatens Microsoft's Windows Phone Earnings From Android
>we don’t really have a German or UK or whatever patent system any more, we have a European Union one. So this German case doesn’t apply just to Germany, it applies right across the EU

This has got to be false information. It was mentioned that this was a ruling of the Federal Patent Court of Germany, BPatG. Since when does a German patent court dictate EU patent laws and rulings? does this mean that if a patent court in another EU country ruled the other way that that is now the new EU stance? This makes no logical sense.

goggles99··on Multiprocess Firefox
This is a terrible idea. There is no justifiable reason to do this. The reasons given are weak, this is just more over engineering that will add an enormous amount of complexity and add no real value.

Lets look at the reasons given as to why they want to do this.

>Performance. Most performance work at Mozilla over the last two years has focused on responsiveness of the browser. The goal is to reduce "jank"—those times when the browser seems to briefly freeze when loading a big page, typing in a form, or scrolling.

You can do all of this with proper threading and task delegation. Putting things in separate processes will not magically make things better. The answer to "jank" is proper coding, not over engineering. Last time I checked there was the same "jank" in IE and Chrome even though they use MPs.

>Security. Technically, sandboxing doesn’t require multiple processes. However, a sandbox that covered the current (single) Firefox process wouldn’t be very useful. Sandboxes are only able to prevent processes from performing actions that a well-behaved process would never do. Unfortunately, a well-behaved Firefox process (especially one with add-ons installed) needs access to much of the network and file system.

This is BS. You could have three processes and have FireFox sandboxed completely. Main process runs in a low integrity mode which limits it's resource access to a single directory. Second process is a download delegation process (takes a file after it is downloaded and moves it to the requested location while also promoting it's integrity) running in normal integrity mode. Third process is a network communication delegate/proxy running in normal or possibly even low integrity. These two delegate processes I mentioned will still be needed for the MP Firefox so it is no more work to create them.

>Stability

This is the only true benefit, but it is of very little value. Firefox almost never crashes and when it does, the session restore brings you back to were you left off in seconds.

Cons? More complexity means more bugs. This is a workaround for really fixing FireFox. I am going to have 150+ extra processes in my task manager now. More memory use. More context switches in the operating system eating up resources and causing more system latency and overall slowdown (context switches at the kernel level which will affect the whole OS).

goggles99··on South Africa's Nelson Mandela dies
Yeah they can: They are both the first black elected leader of their respective countries.

Not in terms of worthiness. If Obama was exactly the same in every way but was 100% white, he never would have even made congressman let alone either term of presidency. He was pushed through on racism (non-white people voting blindly for him because the other guy was white), political correctness, the power of persuasive marketing (of lies) and the attitude of affirmative action.

Obama is no leader or unifier. Every other word out of his mouth is a lie. Mandela is worthy of credit for the skills he possessed. Obama is a giant social and traditional media, speech writers and teleprompters induced fraud.
