goatsi··on Have ‘hobby’ apps become the new social networks?
>At the early stages of TikTok there was some controversy that diverse, disabled, marginalized etc people were being underrepresented compared to other platforms and we now see how that turned out.

The controversy was that they were being actively suppressed as a moderation decision.

goatsi··on "Out of Band" network management is not trivial
When I see out of band management at remote locations (usually for a dedicated doctors network run by the health authority that gets deployed at offices and clinics) it's generally analog phone line -> modem -> console port. Dialup is more than enough if all you need to do is reset a router config.

Not 100% out of band for a telco though, unless they made sure to use a competitors lines.

goatsi··on 'Lavender': The AI machine directing Israel's bombing in Gaza
In the linked article the only check the IDF was still using on the target list provided by the AI was discarding any and all targets it selected who were women, as they don't believe Hamas would use them as fighters.
goatsi··on 7 out of every 10 Fentanyl pills seized by DEA contain a lethal dose
Oregon decriminalized simple possession by end users. You would still need to purchase the drugs from the exact illicit supply chain the DEA is profiling here, so it's no surprise it didn't solve the overdose crisis. Under legalization you could buy an exact dose from a licensed supplier.
goatsi··on Show HN: CPU Prices on eBay
One thing to be aware is that for older CPUs, the limiting factor is often compatible motherboards. The original ones are more likely to have died than CPUs from the same generation, and new ones aren't being made.
goatsi··on You Don't Batch Cook When You're Suicidal (2020)
How are we supposed to listen to that? It's behind a paywall.
goatsi··on You Don't Batch Cook When You're Suicidal (2020)
Checking the article again it might have been one, but not one she was capable of taking at the time.

"Back – or forward – to 2012, and as my world shrank into a tiny flat, as friends fell away and I started to isolate myself from my family in shame and self-loathing and depression"

goatsi··on You Don't Batch Cook When You're Suicidal (2020)
"My brother was in the RAF last time we spoke, a couple of Christmases ago, when he described Iain Duncan Smith as the best thing to happen to this country and told me I had chosen to have a baby outside of marriage so deserved everything I got. It’s fair to describe us as ‘estranged’ these days."

This is where I'm getting the family info from.

goatsi··on You Don't Batch Cook When You're Suicidal (2020)
It's pretty clear if you read the article, and even more explicit in the news paper articles in her photos. She was a single mother with zero family support. She couldn't just work odd or long hours (and was forced to leave her existing better paid job) because there was nobody to care for her young child.
goatsi··on NSO group iPhone zero-click, zero-day exploit captured in the wild
Google started pushing for carriers to use RCS in 2015, and launched it's own app for it in 2019 after that failed to move quickly enough. They didn't start adding E2EE to it until 2020, and it wasn't the default until 2021.
goatsi··on California deploys AI-powered wildfire detection systems
>Current firefighting policy for public consumption might be found (somewhere) here

Right at the top of the page.

"CAL FIRE aggressively fights fire, with the goal of keeping 95% of fires contained at 10 acres or less."

Seems very clear to me.

goatsi··on Inside the AI porn marketplace
I guess I'm reading the article as them calling CivitAI the "marketplace", which is like calling Github a marketplace because projects can have a button to run them on Heroku.
goatsi··on Inside the AI porn marketplace
The articles focus on the marketplace element and "for sale" seems strange given that everything in it is available for free. Any of the the models or LORAs can be downloaded without payment and run locally, the apps and websites mentioned are just charging for running the models.

The screenshot they use for the example specifically has ublock origin as the vetted extension that is permitted to run.
goatsi··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
In this case what she recognized as the treatment is managed by something other than the medical system. I would assume this is the same in other places, unless doctors in Europe can write prescriptions for apartments.
goatsi··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
The person in the article applied because of health problems.

>Denise said she hasn’t cancelled her MAID application because she still suffers from painful chronic health problems that haven’t been properly handled.

goatsi··on Pentagon, Justice Dept investigate as secret military documents appear online
The 71k Ukrainian KIA version was posted on 4chan after the 17.5k Ukrainian KIA version was posted there first, it's the counter version. It also has some pretty laughable numbers on it that are clearly just from photo-shopping the first version to retain the font (Russia only losing 600 vehicles and 8 helicopters).
goatsi··on The anatomy of the Cayman Islands offshore financial center (2016)
The key point isn't if a claim is accepted or denied (the people getting the letters almost certainly have standing to be accepted), it's if there is money to pay the claims, and how soon they can get it. Having an unsecured claim isn't "Show up on Monday and the FDIC will hand you a bag of cash", it's "The bankruptcy court and trustees expect the final settlement to be in 3-5 years, with a haircut of 10-30%".

goatsi··on Stripe issues
What were your anti-fraud measures, and were their any reports of it from users or stripe? It's extremely common in this universe for people to enter card details that they are not authorized to use into web forms.
goatsi··on No Other Options: Newly revealed documents depict Canadian euthanasia regime
The site you linked estimates 60,000 cancer deaths in California this year, I would assume it's safe to assume what the eventual prognosis was for those cases. Nearly 10,000 of them from lung cancer, and over 5,000 from colorectal cancer. If those are your examples of cancers with unpleasant end of life experiences and less than 500 people in the state used MAID, then it would seem as though thousands are suffering. Though I don't know how liberal your hospice system is with morphine & fentanyl.
goatsi··on No Other Options: Newly revealed documents depict Canadian euthanasia regime
Here you go: https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/medical-assi...

>The majority of persons receiving MAID during 2020 were reported as having cancer as their main underlying medical condition (69.1%). This is followed by cardiovascular conditions (13.8%), chronic respiratory conditions (11.3%) and neurological conditions (10.2%)

Some additional breakdowns:

>Cardiovascular conditions were the second most frequently cited main condition for persons receiving MAID. Congestive heart failure was the most frequently cited heart condition in this category (42.2%). Under respiratory conditions, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was the most frequently listed condition.

>Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, was the leading neurological condition reported for persons receiving MAID (35.2%), followed by Parkinson's disease (18.1%) multiple sclerosis (MS) (9.7%), and progressive supranuclear palsy (4.4%).

Edit: Just realized that was the 2020 report (with around 7500 using MAID). The 2021 report is here: https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/medical-assi.... Cancer is down a bit in this one (69% to 65%).

goatsi··on No Other Options: Newly revealed documents depict Canadian euthanasia regime
>One of the greatest reasons for concern is the sheer scale of Canada’s euthanasia regime. California provides a useful point of comparison: It legalized medically assisted death the same year as Canada, 2016, and it has about the same population, just under forty million. In 2021 in California, 486 people died using the state’s assisted suicide program. In Canada in the same year, 10,064 people used MAID to die.

70% of the Canadians reported cancer as the reason for MAID. It sounds like thousands of Californians are experiencing unnecessary and extended end of life suffering.

goatsi··on Immigration accounts for over 94% of Canada’s population growth in Q2 of 2022
Immigrants are 21.5% of the population. They are also on average younger than the rest of the population, so they will use less medical services. The average age of a Canadian actually went down this year for the first time in over 50 years because of younger immigrants arriving.
