goatsi··on Waymo in Singapore
They are apparently up to two years out from carrying passengers

"Waymo said it will introduce its fully autonomous, all-electric ride-hailing service in Singapore via the Waymo app by 2028.

An initial fleet of all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles is expected to arrive in the coming months, it said.

Mapping and validation activities are scheduled for 2027, with trained autonomous specialists conducting initial manual driving to adapt the Waymo Driver to local road geometry, monsoon weather patterns, and more. "

goatsi··on Facebook is cooked
>But on the other hand, I hadn't logged in in nearly a decade!

This is the cause. With a long dormant account, facebook has no real content to show you. Your friends will almost all be dormant as well, even the facebook pages and groups you were part of are likely to have fallen silent. Facebook will feed you directly from the slop firehose rather than show you a blank feed.

goatsi··on Meta created 'playbook' to fend off pressure to crack down on scammers
All ads are searchable. They found the exact words and phrases that regulators used and then made sure those were clean.

>As a result, Meta decided to take the tactic global, performing similar analyses to assess “scam discoverability” in other countries. “We have built a vast keyword list by country that is meant to mimic what regulators may search for,” one document states. Another described the work as changing the “prevalence perception” of scams on Facebook and Instagram.

goatsi··on Project Gemini
I remember a comment on here years ago from someone in GCP who mentioned that they did not control the "Cloud" namespace. So any VP could launch a new project and call it cloud something and make people very confused about why it wasn't showing up in the cloud dashboard and API.

goatsi··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
I'm glad to see you use "most of this war", acknowledging that Israel has at times totally blockaded all food and medicine from Gaza (and not for logistic or military reasons, but as a pure pressure tactic as stated by Israeli officials).

And it's true, Israel is not required to accept aid from other countries for Gaza. They could instead provide the full required resources for civilians in the occupied areas themselves.

goatsi··on Thoughts on Cloudflare
It's pretty disappointing that the author (writing in 2025) says "perhaps to maintain its status as the world’s largest botnet operator," and links to a Spamhaus report from Q1 of 2020.[0]

If you check the most recent version of the report from Spamhaus (Jan to June 2025)[1], Cloudflare is nowhere to be seen, and Digital Ocean, who they recommend as a Cloudflare alternative is listed as third largest botnet host in the world.

Looking back through the historical reports this isn't a new phenomenon, in Q4 of 2022 Digital Ocean was ranked #2 and Cloudflare was down at #17.

goatsi··on Hackers strike Australia's largest pension funds in coordinated attacks
Having to call/visit and social engineer an employee is an order of magnitude more work than just logging in with stolen credentials, which can be entirely automated. SMS 2FA is valuable when it can prevent credential stuffing attacks. It's a vulnerability when it can be used to reset passwords and recover accounts.

goatsi··on US Ends Support For Ukrainian F-16s
The surviving Russian pilots fly towards the front line at a high altitude until they get close to the suspected range of Ukrainian air defences, drop glide bombs and then turn around. Sometimes the Ukrainians have snuck an air defence unit closer to the front lines without it being detected and the pilots exit the category of surviving Russian pilots.

I'm not sure how applicable this would be to a confrontation with European countries. Russian fighters will get getting lots of flight hours on CAP as well, but not much combat based on reporting. Both sides are keeping everything inside their own AD bubbles.

goatsi··on Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code
It's an anti abuse method. A valid phone number will always have a cost for spammers/multi accounters to obtain in mass, but will have no cost for the desired user base (the assumption is that every worthwhile user already has a phone).

Captchas are trivially broken and you can get access to millions of residential IP addresses, but phone numbers (especially if you filter out VOIP providers) still have a cost.

goatsi··on BYD to offer Tesla-like self-driving tech in all models for free
I read that flyer as the price of the car plus COE. The "Excite Package" Dolphin lists "Guaranteed COE" for $165,888 Singapore dollars ($122,505 USD) all in.

>In Singapore, most people typically purchase new vehicles through dealers. Dealers will collect orders from customers and participate in the COE bidding on behalf of their customers.

>Supply and demand set the price for COE, which regulates demand. When COE prices are high, vehicle prices, as quoted by dealers, will have to increase, reducing demand. When COE prices are lower, dealers can afford to reduce prices if they want to, which will increase demand.

https://dollarsandsense.sg/guide-understanding-coe-bidding-s...

It looks like dealers handle getting the COE (which makes sense, since you couldn't drive the vehicle off the lot without one).

Subtract the $85,000 (SD) CAT A COE cost from the car price and it comes out to $80,000 (SD), or ~$60,000 USD.

goatsi··on Moving Bricks: Money-laundering practices in the online scam industry
The "money laundering" at focus in the article is receiving money directly from people who are being scammed, and moving it quickly enough that the police cannot freeze or recover it when the scam is discovered. That's different from usual money laundering.

The assumption has been that Telegram provided significantly more access to Russia years ago, as it remains unblocked (with channels even run by the government), and Pavel Durov wasn't arrested when he visited Russia after laws were passed that would apply to Telegram but he claims they were refusing to follow.
