goalieca··on Sharing AI progress in mathematics
Don’t paste your research into these AI because they will train on it and then scoop you.
goalieca··on Vibecoding isn't as fun as writing code by hand
This is new to me (last 6 months or so). What I’m observing is people growing lazy. I think it will take a while for it to swing back because momentum is still in the wrong direction.
goalieca··on Vibecoding isn't as fun as writing code by hand
I’m doubtful. I’ve seen increasing hands-off work where bots are now replying on PRs, tickets, and even DMs!
goalieca··on Opus 5.5 agents discover two room-temperature magnetic semiconductor candidates
I don’t believe any of these AI detectors.
goalieca··on Web Search API
Curious what other people’s experience is with cloudflare billing. When you go through an AE, everything seems made up anyways.
goalieca··on We want you to build the next Git platform on Cloudflare
Wave was a cool tech demo, and I was excited to see it. The teaser video was solid marketing. Me and my lab mates couldn’t figure out what use case it solved though.

Google+ was pure garbage being shoved down our throats. That was a huuuge signal that Google had changed.

goalieca··on Venice’s failed war against Constantinople led to the first bond market
The best option is to not spend like maniacs so you need to fire the money printer.
goalieca··on Make Tmux the OS
I remember it like this. Windows XP and earlier was a horrible era for stability and security and the world was overall less connected. Phones were always on and always connected. The iPhone was honestly the first stable internet device, that didn't sleep or pause, and the first internet device many people had that wasn't infected by viruses.

Inflation is an invisible tax. Nothing is free.
goalieca··on Apple Pass Designer
Apple is sales driven.
goalieca··on Harvard particle physicist Matthew Schwartz drops 36 papers authored with Claude
Well, many of us in Hackernews lived through grad school. We’ve seen the games. May our AI lords enshittify things even more.
goalieca··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
It's normal practice for companies to have a backlog of scanner tool results. Sometimes in the thousands for a larger project. Many of them are legit bugs but also highly local and so far down the stack they're hard to exploit. It takes a ton of work to triage, more than management is willing to spend. Also more than they're wiling to fix and paydown.
goalieca··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
You don’t train calculators on how to add. All calculators will more or less come up with the same answer to some deterministic and quantifiable level of accuracy and precision.
goalieca··on One Month Without AI
> I stopped reading those descriptions, like, I told it what to do, I assume it did what I said. The description is for others.

If you cannot read it as the author, what hope do I have to read and make sense of the wall of text which doesn’t seem to describe what I actually need to start reviewing.

I really really encourage everyone to write their own descriptions for PRs. If you cannot succinctly describe it in a way another human understands then you don’t understand your own change and you should withdraw your request.

goalieca··on Revealing the details of how OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face
Yeah, take a look into the memories of your agent. Theres often a lot of notes to pass forward between instances and generations. No doubt these agents leaving notes on forums and elsewhere are creating an essentially higher order feedback loop.
goalieca··on Revealing the details of how OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face
My p(doom) started rising the moment I realized there are people trying to achieve recursive self improvement on the AI (ie: responsible for training themselves). Evolution took us from rna bases to the human race. I don’t see why evolution couldn’t be more rapid with machine intelligence.

Yes, LLM as they exist now are word predictors basically leveraging the structure of language for their intelligence. But it’s pretty wild just how they will try to meet their objectives at all costs. If we don’t ensure that there is good alignment with humanity, we could definitely face unforeseen consequences.

goalieca··on Show HN: How long do I need to work at my salary before I can coast, or retire?
You can look to Canada for high income taxes, high property taxes, and high sales tax. We also have high usage fees and parking fees.
goalieca··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
The land can be compact: shaped like a square with minimal perimeter. For the same area along a canal, with winding corners, it would seem like a far longer run. This is especially worse depending how inverters are since DC along long transmission is less efficient.
goalieca··on AMD's random number generator can't generate a 0?
You should be using &0xFFFF for masking. Your mod is off by 1 too.
goalieca··on Attention is all you have
i had invested a lot into del.icio.us and other similar systems but what really killed bookmarks for me was the instability of URIs and how hard it was to search for the right page based on a title or bookmark name and not the contents. At the time, google was really really effective at search.
goalieca··on What Sun got wrong
I remember the attitude was that solaris was for serious professionals and had the highest calibre of code. For the most part it seemed true and these were solid workhorses. But, i did end up finding concurrency bugs when they introduced their multi-core integer computing behemoth.
goalieca··on Teen Social Media Bans Miss the Point
Our generation did not turn out fine. Phones are hugely a net loss for society. I stand by that.
goalieca··on If AI coding is lowering your code quality, you're not managing quality right
The issue I’ve observed is that good humans brainrot and let the AI do the thinking for them. Too many say LGTM and then push a PR.
goalieca··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
It is and it isn't. Around 15-20 years ago, the EU economy was actually bigger than the US economy in total terms (not per capita). The issue is that the EU has stagnated, as has canada while the USA has been pulling away. Growth has been pretty terrible for both for a long time.
goalieca··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
So what about the CETA (trade agreement) between canada and europe that isn't ratified yet. This feels like a hollow announcement for politicians.
goalieca··on Global shortage has led to motor oil rationing at Costco
What I meant to say is the USA didn’t care about Alberta. They’re about supply management, subsidies in manufacturing and lumber and dairy and that. Alberta has their hands clean in this one.
goalieca··on Global shortage has led to motor oil rationing at Costco
The trade war tarrifs are punishing Alberta the least. Ontario and Quebec are taking more of it.
goalieca··on Global shortage has led to motor oil rationing at Costco
Our oil travels across our country via the USA. We also depend heavily on USA refining in certain provinces. This will never happen.
goalieca··on The Waymo effect: how AI is quietly making research less collaborative
> back a response that's all Claude (and disorganized and not really making sense to boot

You’re absolutely right! They trusted but did not verify. Thats a load bearing point — they assumed intention from your question.
