go_prodev··on How you breathe is like a fingerprint that can identify you
Yes, higher is better. The CPAP lowers HRV during use.
go_prodev··on How you breathe is like a fingerprint that can identify you
Hold my CPAP

Here's a fun fact, the CPAP machine lowers my Heart Rate Variability. HRV spikes when I sleep part of the night without it.

go_prodev··on Apache ECharts
It's much heavier but a lot more powerful and flexible.
go_prodev··on PostgreSQL Anonymizer
With great power comes great responsibility.
go_prodev··on A ChatGPT clone, in 3000 bytes of C, backed by GPT-2 (2023)
GELU really is like magic:

UNARY(GELU, b / 2 * (1 + tanh(.7978845 * (b + .044715 * b * b * b))))

go_prodev··on Making Pop Rocks from scratch (is complicated) [video]
He addressed the "dad paid for everything" rumors in a recent video.

From memory he just worked for it, bought secondhand and then made a lot of money through YouTube.

go_prodev··on Imhex: A hex editor for reverse engineers
Maybe they've updated it, but I found a Windows MSI link about halfway down the front page.
go_prodev··on How many High Streets are there in London?
Streatham High Road still seems like a grey area that should be considered a high street.

It probably was a road (connecting 2 towns with no houses) when it was first named, but is more of a street (with housing either side) now, and is definitely the primary commercial street in Streatham.

go_prodev··on A fourteen-day free trial ain’t gonna cut it
I'm always exploring new graphing libraries. Are you happy to share a link to yours?
go_prodev··on Sleep apnea: Mouthguards less invasive, just as effective as CPAP
I was fitted for one, and was told that the lower jaw is held forward by using the upper teeth as an anchor. Over time they can cause upper and lower teeth to move.
go_prodev··on Don't use your ORM entities for everything – embrace the SQL
As someone who always prefers native SQL over ORM queries, I'll add a couple of counterpoints.

Most IDEs provide intellisense/validation of ORM entities, vs treating SQL like a raw string.

ORM entities also make refactoring and impact analysis slightly easier.

Despite those benefits, I generally find ORMs a pain for anything besides the most basic queries.

go_prodev··on Launch HN: Thorntale (YC W24) – Presentation software that works with your data
Thanks for the recommendation, Quarto might be just what I've been looking for.
go_prodev··on Postgres as queue
Thanks for the links, I was wondering if SQL Server supports similar features.
go_prodev··on DeskHop – Fast Desktop Switching
Glad to see it mentioned here. I used it a few years ago and it worked really well.

It makes it especially easy to drag and drop file copies across computers.

go_prodev··on Beeper Mini is back
Sorry I meant setting up an account in the FB ecosystem. Prior to that I didn't use FB, WhatsApp or Instagram.
go_prodev··on Beeper Mini is back
WhatsApp is that middle ground in some parts of the world.

Upon moving to Europe we discovered that WhatsApp is the preferred way to connect with friends, employees, social groups and schools. It was actually the driving factor in me conceding and setting up a FB account.

go_prodev··on Many of today’s unhealthy foods were brought to you by Big Tobacco
Does the word mean something different in England?
go_prodev··on Hookworm gave the South a bad name (2016)
Ah that makes more sense. I recall one of the studies saying that the worms couldn't reproduce, whereas the article on HN mentions millions of eggs causing an infestation.
go_prodev··on Hookworm gave the South a bad name (2016)
The article paints hookworms as disease causing parasites, responsible for the poor health and economic circumstances in the South.

But this year hookworms were involved in a clinical trial on type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease with positive results, so maybe the south were onto something.

go_prodev··on Apple vs. Meta: The Illusion of Privacy
I'm not an Apple device user so I could be mistaken, but Apple devices must be collecting all of this information about their users if Facebook is able to access it.
go_prodev··on My Node.js is a bit Rusty
That sounds really interesting.

Out of curiosity, how do you use Node for this purpose? Is it building a real time dashboard?

My company has possibly similar challenges. We have lots of sensors on equipment that streams information every few ms through a time series database from the vendor. It's used to build monitoring dashboards, trigger alarms and help engineers to prioritize and optimize equipment settings, and look for trends over time.

It's such high volumes that capturing it and analyzing can be difficult, so we use a combination of vendor systems, Azure Synapse and Power BI. There are still lots of opportunities to improve, and I'd be interested to hear how you landed on your setup and what you do with the data.

go_prodev··on Phone.wtf
I rarely get calls, so when I do, I usually don't notice it ringing in my pocket.

I'd prefer a phone that zapped me.

go_prodev··on Mark Spitznagel says the ‘greatest credit bubble in human history’ is set to pop
If his fee is based on profits, he needs to be correct some of the time. The types of events you mentioned aren't all hype and he can't will them into existence, so maybe he's on to something?
go_prodev··on We’re closer to ‘engineering’ blood vessels
It appears to be a pretty active area of research on Google Scholar, which is where I first learned about Cyclodextrin for heart disease.

Here are some of the links I've read recently, which sound promising to me (a non-expert in this field).

Microarray patches to deal with bio-availability of Cyclodextrin: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S014486172...

Cholrem company has a commercial product Cavadex, which they claim can reverse arterial plaque: https://www.cholrem.com/

Cyclarity Therapeutics have a Cyclodextrin candidate drug they are hoping to start trials on next year: https://cyclaritytx.com/our-science/

Cyclarity (formerly Underdog Pharmaceuticals) published an article on their technology to use Cyclodextrin molecules to encapsulate "toxic biomolecules" including 7-ketocholesterol which they believe is linked to atherosclerosis and macular degeneration. I think this might be the approach they are using with their candidate drug linked above. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S037851732...

I get the impression that Cyclodextrins are far from perfect, but at least there is some hope for non-invasive treatments in future.

go_prodev··on We’re closer to ‘engineering’ blood vessels
I'm eagerly awaiting cyclodextrin based treatments, that can potentially remove the plaque and cholesterol buildup.

There's so much to be positive about at the moment.

go_prodev··on How to check if two SQL tables are the same
Normally EXCEPT or MINUS does a good enough job.

For full comparisons of MSSQL tables, I often use Visual Studio which has a Data Comparison tool that shows identical rows and differences between source and target.

go_prodev··on Kangaroo tendons could rebuild human knees better, stronger
If it helps to put your mind at ease, in some parts of Australia Kangaroos are a pest. They are culled in agricultural areas and this treatment prevents some of the animal from going to waste. They're also often roadkill as they chase headlights at night.

Companies pay hunters around $1-$2 per kg for the kangaroo meat. An adult kangaroo can be upwards of 60kg (130lb). The meat is often used for dog food, but is extremely lean but a bit gamey tasting I've been told.

So, hopefully this treatment doesn't cause additional death of the roos, but helps to make their deaths less wasteful.

go_prodev··on You can deactivate anyone's WhatsApp account by simply sending an email
Years ago I bought my dad an Audible subscription, but because it was a gift I signed up with my email address and then changed it to my dad's address on his birthday. Somehow I ended up inside his Amazon account because I used his email address. I guess some of the backend logic is hard to get right the first time.

Another time I was talking to a credit union CTO who was dealing with someone blocking other people's account access by picking a random account number and making 3 bogus guesses to lock them out. At the time the credit union had a policy that required calling them to unblock... which was a PITA on weekends when people need money.

go_prodev··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
Battery life gets mentioned quite often with laptops, but is it still really that important?

I run my business from an X1 Carbon, but it's more about portability than battery life. Trains, planes, Starbucks all have power available so it's constantly plugged in and I can't remember the last time I used it on battery for more than an hour.

go_prodev··on Apple could force a 111-year-old fruit company to change its Apple logo
And I'll start selling "Window Apples", small apple shaped window ornaments.
