gnutrino··on Phoenix LiveView: Async Assign Pattern
As I evolved the pattern over time, I found it really did help clean up a lot of code in `mount`. Once I got it working for one LiveView, it was really easy to rip out a lot of messy code in the other LiveViews. I'm definitely happy with the results! Thanks for reading.
gnutrino··on Phoenix LiveView: Async Assign Pattern
I haven't looked into this much, but saw someone do a talk on it at ElixirConf maybe two years ago. I bet it's much more robust now.
gnutrino··on Phoenix LiveView: Async Assign Pattern
I started using this pattern in my LiveView projects, and finally rolled it into a common module for others to use. I've found it really helps clean up the mount function, which can get pretty messy as your LiveViews grow over time.

My apologies for the terrible elixir syntax highlighting in this post. I keep putting off finding a good way to do this on Blogger.

gnutrino··on How is Apache APISIX Fast?
It appears they are making an assumption that the type of person who reads blog posts about the inner workings of an API gateway also knows how to read a well labeled graph.
gnutrino··on Stop Telling Everyone What You Do for a Living
I was at a dinner party and asked someone what they do. They ran a research lab, and I was really interested, and asked questions. He was surprised I actually liked chemistry and was interested in his research. He said normally people just joke about how they hated chemistry in high school, so he normally avoided talking about it. He said people don't realize it's really rude to basically tell someone that their life's work is boring and they hated it when they were 16. I'm now much more careful about how I respond to what people do for a living, even if it's not something that I'm interested in.
gnutrino··on I wish Asciidoc was more popular
I love Asciidoc, especially with PlantUML. I have used them together on various projects to version, and host internal documentation. The code block snippet generator is super useful as well. Spring Framework documentation is a shining example of how useful it can be!
gnutrino··on Seven years on, what do we know about the disappearance of flight MH370? (2021)
I’ve seen this before and was shocked as well. Really gave me some perspective on how much trust we put in pilots and airlines to keep us safe while hurtling through the air at hundreds of miles per hour.
gnutrino··on Write admin tools from day one (2022)
Woot! Thanks for reading!
gnutrino··on Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit
This has been out for a couple years. It's kind of fun, but if you want to do more than one player it would get pricey. You need a switch per vehicle, and each vehicle costs $99.
gnutrino··on Write admin tools from day one (2022)
(author). I agree with your sentiment , and try to make this point in the article. This is why I suggest using out of the box admin frameworks and other ways to provide quick admin features. Only spend time adding custom functionality once a need arises. With this approach you already have the frameworks setup, tested, and you have been writing your code with support in mind.
gnutrino··on Write admin tools from day one (2022)
Don’t wait until support requests become overwhelming, write administrative tools for your software from day one.
gnutrino··on Ask HN: Strategies for working with engineers that are too smart?
Just have them read this: https://milwaukeemaven.blogspot.com/2022/08/dont-outsmart-yo...
gnutrino··on Part II: The failure points from $5M to $100M in ARR
I’ve worked with a few good product managers. I always equate PM to project manager which is totally different and typically useless in software development. The most useless BS role is when companies hire for scrum master.
gnutrino··on Secondments at Zapier
Zapier can afford to do this because their pricing is absurdly high IMO.
gnutrino··on Ask HN: Are headlights getting brighter or am I getting old?
They are definitely brighter. I had a 2009 Ford Fusion and could barely see the road. Now I have a Mazda and I legit feel bad at how bright they are for other drivers. A lot of cars also now have auto brights, which of course never turn off quite fast enough. I always turn my auto brights off, but my wife doesn’t and it drives me nuts.
gnutrino··on Artist banned from art subreddit because their work looked AI-generated
In my experience Reddit mods are in general jaded intolerant assholes. I’m sure this is because the Redditors they deal with are in general jaded intolerant assholes.
gnutrino··on Phoenix 1.7 is View-less
This makes sense to me. Views always seemed a like unnecessary boilerplate to me. Better to keep all the code together in one module, and just import common functions. On the other hand, I don't typically like defining the template in a sigil, unless it's a really small one, so I probably won't do that much.
gnutrino··on Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery – Bad Writing
I think the only thing missing from the movie is that they should have established that Andi had a sister, and maybe allude to the fact she has a twin or very similar looking sister.

I think the twist was good actually, and you see why Miles was so shocked that Andi shows up to the party. That would have made the first hour of the movie more interesting.

gnutrino··on The hype around esports is fading as investors and sponsors dry up
Hobowars was great. It was pretty funny, and random things about it pop into my mind every so often. Timehunter was another favorite of mine.
gnutrino··on Ask HN: How is the job search coming along for people who got laid off?
I went to a small Wisconsin state school, grad with a BS in CS in 2009. We learned C, operating systems, and had a compiler class. Definitely not useful in my day job, but it was fundamental in my understanding of programming languages and computing. Can’t believe there would be a CS program out there that would skip this.

I do know there are programs out there that focus on different aspects though, and not surprised they would be geared to make people more job ready. We actually didn’t really learn about unit testing, and such, so it’s a balance.

gnutrino··on Tracers in the Dark
The Welcome to Video takedown was also detailed in a recent Wired article. Crazy, disturbing, and interesting.
gnutrino··on The Prototype Maturity Model
If you've ever built software I'm sure you've been asked "Why'd you do X and not Y!?", to which you must go through the whole history of the project and explain why you made that decision.

After running into this issue at multiple companies, I developed the Prototype Maturity Model for evaluating a software prototype. It is intended to be used as a working document for teams that are taking a software prototype from its inception, to mass adoption. This can be used for teams building internal tools, SaaS companies building a new platform, or any team that must make tough decisions when trying to get innovative ideas developed rapidly.

With PMM, you can point people to the project's evaluation history. Without detailing each and every decision, the PMM will give stakeholders the information they need to understand the project history, and easily identify areas they may want to focus their effort in improving the prototype as a whole.

Let me know what you think HN.

gnutrino··on I've been abusing HTTP Status Codes in my APIs for years
Not true.
gnutrino··on The Niche Programmer
My first internship was trying to figure out all the Perl scripts left behind by a sysadmin who got fired. I learned a lot that summer. I really learned to like Perl after writing my own programs in in, and making sure to document them well!
gnutrino··on The Niche Programmer
There is a high probability that your coworkers secretly hate you.
gnutrino··on Overhauling Mario 64's code to reach 30 FPS and render 6x faster on N64 [video]
I remember playing it at the store thinking we had reached the pinnacle of computer graphics, and that there was no way they could get better. Boy was I wrong! Still one of my favorite games of all time.
gnutrino··on Zapier: A $5B Unbundling Opportunity
I’ve had this same thought. The features I get out of Zapier are very useful but lacking some basic functionality that would make it a killer app. Things like branching are missing and rate limits are low. The price is also very high per action which makes it a poor use case for anything that isn’t directly making you money.
gnutrino··on Show HN: A Simple Memory Game
Would be cooler if you were graded on how many guesses it took. Still fun though.
gnutrino··on Ask HN: Is Facebook Dying?
Facebook is so feature bloated now. I rarely log in anymore because it is just too overwhelming.

I literally have 30 menu options in the side bar. This is not an exaggeration. There are stores, memories, groups, marketplaces, messaging, live, watch. It's insanity.

They've gotten too good at keeping your attention. My mom is addicted to facebook. She can't put it down. She is constantly telling me about news articles and crap I don't care about.

Facebook is a cancer that people should cut out. Instagram isn't as bad (yet).

gnutrino··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea (2020)
This founder is obviously book smart, but street stupid. I can't imagine any other outcome here. The fact they wasted 40k on this is amazing to me. If they had been forced to raise that money, maybe they would have been forced to answer the important questions first.
