Is he running for office in November?
gniv··on Gemini 4 Argon
Had to read it twice lol. The syllable that is stressed makes a huge difference in some words.
gniv··on Gemini 4 Argon
Judging by other comments here this model has been available internally for a few weeks. So the public release is likely imminent. The timing of the announcement might have to do with end of quarter for some obscure reason.
gniv··on Gemini 4 Argon
Jevon's paradox is the most likely answer. Tons of stuff to do.

They are playing a longer-term and more enterprise-oriented game.
gniv··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
I don't live in Romania so I don't know the details but that probably makes me more objective. I think the situation is better for the future than it was in the 90s. In hindsight, back then it took many years for things to get better. Whereas now with so much upheaval in the world Romania is well-positioned to keep growing.
gniv··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
> I lived through the 1990s here in Romania, the future does not look bright in the slightest.

Why? Inflation was much higher then. There were almost no highways. Very little foreign tourism. Towns were ugly. Industry was barely functioning. Etc. Things are way better now. Just because Romania has high debt is no reason to be pessimistic. Everybody has high debt.

A cultured bureaucrat.

Based on the large selection of no-alcohol beers I'm seeing I would say yes.
gniv··on Anthropic's IPO prospectus shows AI vision, surging costs
That was my question too. 2025 is really old in AI-company time. But I'm suspecting the "leak" was on purpose so they can now come and show how much better (but still not great) the first half of 2026 was.
gniv··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
Wow, funny and informative that video.

The salient bit: The Prague escalators were made by the Soviets and ran at 0.9m/s (aka very fast) so it's likely the ones I rode in Moscow were similar. They are "illegal" now and being replaced.

gniv··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
I remember taking the escalators in Moscow in the 80s and thinking they were freakishly fast. According to this article they are not that fast. I wonder if they lowered the speed or it was just my lack of familiarity with long escalators.
gniv··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
> On the other hand any large improve in batteries may gradually bring Toyota into EV world

A relatively fast and large improvement in battery cost would bankrupt Toyota. Everybody will just buy BEVs.

gniv··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
> Indeed. Toyota's days are numbered.

> BYD is selling EVs for US$14K in Australia.

It's not even about BYD. All of Europe is now buying EVs like crazy. How many of these are Toyota? One 40k€ model basically.

gniv··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
Ads on Maps were inevitable. Google does it too. Those services just cost a ton of money to run. (I know the article talks about other ads too.)

gniv··on 'Offensively cheap': solar power is looking up
“If you have a massive cloud formation, the rooftop PV production can drop by so much that it looks like you have lost basically almost a nuclear power station.”

A good problem to have but still a problem. Who would have thought weather forecasting would be critical to grid maintenance.

gniv··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
FNAC/Darty/Boulanger still sell it for 969. Maybe I should pull the trigger soon.
gniv··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
The 17 is 969 euros. The 18 Pro is 1479 euros. How can I justify the difference? I'm on 13 now and I wanted to get an 18 but since there is no such thing I will probably end up with the 17.
gniv··on Google warns of lower quality as it revamps Europe search results to avoid fines
I do. But sometimes I just start on the Chrome bar.
gniv··on Google warns of lower quality as it revamps Europe search results to avoid fines
The most upsetting change for me was the missing link to Google Maps when searching directly from Google (the victim of an earlier decision from EU). So I asked a chatbot to make me a browser extension that adds it back to the top bar of the search results page. I use it almost every day. Mentioning it in case others miss it too.
gniv··on US diesel prices hit a record high of $5.85 on average
Yes they tried to increase it a few years ago and failed. Farmers came with tractors to Paris..
gniv··on US diesel prices hit a record high of $5.85 on average
It's interesting that diesel is taxed more than gas in the US. It's the other way around in France.
gniv··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
I said nothing about the drought. My comment was on timing, which affects the optics of those who read it. Imagine going on vacation for 2 months, as they do, then coming back and reading this article while seeing heavy rain outside. With all the fake news you can see how some folks would be skeptical.
gniv··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Yeah they still have restrictions in my area but I don't know how to find out the real situation. I am close to the Seine and I've seen it quite high the other day, but that's probably not a good indication of the general state.
gniv··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
The timing of this article is a bit unfortunate. It's been raining here (France) every day for the past week, sometimes heavily.
