pretty standard to use that in order to generate revenge porn in case you post a negative yelp review.

Long before that in 1054, was the East - West Schism that split the Catholic and Orthodox churches. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East%E2%80%93West_Schism

how am I trying to cope here?
gnarbarian··on Is Google's looming monopoly trial a watershed moment for Big Tech?
these days the difference between a right wing conspiracy theory and the news is 6 months.
gnarbarian··on Is Google's looming monopoly trial a watershed moment for Big Tech?
I don't. but their dominant position enables an abnormal influence on modern discourse and politics.
gnarbarian··on Is Google's looming monopoly trial a watershed moment for Big Tech?
Google performs too much ideological editorializing on their search results and on YouTube.
gnarbarian··on The ideal viewport doesn't exist
yes you're right. we have a map with a toolbar at the top of the screen. when zoom was enabled people were constantly zooming in preventing them from being able to see some or all of the buttons hindering their ability to use the app. and causing confusion because they didn't realize they were zoomed in. as soon as we disabled zoom the complaints and questions stopped.

I think this is always been the case with media going back as far as language existed. We are more aware of it now.

the big innovation recently has been the ability to manage content of peer to peer communication as well through social media.

The laws don't really stop it either. The 4th amendment in the United States hasn't prevented huge dragnet style data collection and partnerships with private entities to provide access to whatever data the government wants.
gnarbarian··on The long demise of the stretch limousine
you're 100% right. people will readily jockey, compete, and gloat over the most artificial relative measures of heirarchy. think parking spots or badges in a video game.
gnarbarian··on Remove “This incident will be reported.” from user warnings
I say they should keep it for old times sake
gnarbarian··on Colorado governor signs tractor right-to-repair law opposed by John Deere
I think things are moving in the opposite direction. tech has enabled heavier handed control over products Long after they are sold. often customers legally do not own the products they buy through IP law shenanigans amounting to legal machinations as bizarre as leasing a pair of tennis shoes for $120. you're free to throw them out but you may not use them in a way that reflects poorly on the brand.

tldr: read "shop craft is soul craft"

in theory it could have been solved by a more competitive market.

I believe most shortfalls in our current market economy stem from a lack of competition and then subsequent cartel style collusion for the few big players, high barriers to entry that are fortified through regulatory capture, and a tendency for lots of small players in tight competition to consolidate over time into fewer bigger players. (I think we need to disincentiveze consolidation in all but the most egregious cases of natural monopolies like most public utilities)

this answers so many questions from "why is it so hard to work on my new car" to "why do my tennis shoes wear out so fast".

there are also cultural factors. people using the tools aren't the same craftsmen who build, repair, and sell them. each of these disciplines is now siloed and few companies are putting real effort into considering this holistic lifecycle view of their products.

then when these options do exist people may not be aware, or obtaining them is more immediately expensive or less convenient in the short term. or they simply don't care.

gnarbarian··on The Unequal Impact of Parenthood in Academia (2021)
so maybe the additional leverage makes employers more comfortable paying them more because they don't believe they will leave as readily?

Increased leverage to me would imply suppressed wages.

edit:

I also think employers will often empathize with new parents who may be operating on reduced sleep and hours, giving them a little more leeway than otherwise. I know I do this with my employees.

gnarbarian··on The Unequal Impact of Parenthood in Academia (2021)
I think it contributes to a renewed sense of purpose and dedication that comes from knowing you are responsible for other people and a desire to show them a positive role model.
gnarbarian··on Why do prime numbers make these spirals? (2019)
I suspect most functions would make a spiral on a polar graph if you zoomed out far enough.
gnarbarian··on FAA selects sustainable design for new control towers at smaller airports
Lightening arrestors exist. We use them all the time on our cameras. they're more reliable than people.
gnarbarian··on FAA selects sustainable design for new control towers at smaller airports
the most sustainable design for a control tower is 8 UHD cameras on a pole. ATC doesn't like it though.

gnarbarian··on Vast new stores of water reported on the moon
more people is better than fewer people. it means more of humanity, more discoveries, artwork, music, philosophy.

the more we spread out the more freedom we have to pursue our individual dreams and aspirations. (I believe individual freedom is inversely proportional to population density)

the more we spread out the less likely we are to become extinct in a single catastrophic event.

the instinct to explore discover and expand is intrinsically human. Implying humans should stay on earth is about as silly as thinking humans never should have left a small valley in Africa that could only support 100 people.

to stay is to die and become extinct. that might be preferable to some. and you are free to do so yourself, but please don't prevent those of us who have that unquenchable fire from pursuing that which will set our entire species free.
