gmnash··on Changing the Rules of Rust
A complete overhaul of async sounds nice in the abstract, but without exact details it’s difficult to see how it would be better than what exists.

Similarly, I’m curious as to what the details of a “slightly less generic” type system entails.

gmnash··on Leak of a cancelled 1996 “Duke Nukem Forever” side-scroller
Metroid Dread maybe? Amazing game either way.
gmnash··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
Disputing elections in good faith and lawfully is part of the democratic process.

Incitement of insurrection after lawful means have been exhausted is by definition not part of the democratic process.

gmnash··on The Child Is the Teacher: A Life of Maria Montessori
I'd guess that was likely not an AMS or AMI (certified) school.

Here are two famous people that went to Montessori schools: Sergei Brin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHzj3LrXruY Jeff Bezos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox49EB1tNW4

gmnash··on Ask HN: Anyone go through Montessori education until age 12 (end of grade 6)?
I have two children in Montessori and agree wholeheartedly with the above.

I would like to emphasize the check for AMS or AMI. Any school can all themselves a Montessori school, so I'd make sure it's at least certified in one of those two (not familiar with SAIS so cannot comment on that).

gmnash··on The Invention of Free Love
The difference in average size of the sexes in humans (sexual dimorphism) is associated with some degree of polygyny (males tend to be larger).

gmnash··on Safety: A comparaison between Rust, C++ and Go
JS and C++ are killing it on adoption because they had near monopolies for an extended period of time in their respective areas (browser, native higher level language). They are popular despite their obvious (some in hindsight) shortcomings due to lack of alternatives in the same categories.
gmnash··on Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates
“Most” vaccines. The reason why they didn’t have to invent “non-sterilizing” as a term just for COVID vaccines, is because some existing vaccines had this same property. The acellular pertussis vaccine (the aP in TDaP) is non-sterilizing for example, yet I bet you never took any issue with it.

Does measles count as a respiratory infection? It causes coughing, is airborne, and infection happens via nasal passages. The intramuscular measles vaccine seems to work pretty well.

gmnash··on CoV–2 Spike Impairs DNA Damage Repair – Inhibits V(D)J Recombination in Vitro
According to the CDC, the mRNA vaccines do NOT induce creation of the full spike: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/hcp/mrna.html

> mRNA vaccines tell our cells to make a piece of the “spike protein” that is found on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Since only part of the protein is made, it does not harm the vaccine recipient, but it is antigenic and thus stimulates the immune system to make antibodies.

gmnash··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
This is not accurate.

“mRNA vaccines tell our cells to make a piece of the “spike protein” that is found on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Since only part of the protein is made, it does not harm the vaccine recipient, but it is antigenic and thus stimulates the immune system to make antibodies.”

gmnash··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
The mRNA vaccines contain mRNA that causes your body to produce part of the spike protein, not the whole thing. Therefore it is not cytotoxic.

gmnash··on The antimicrobial potential of cannabidiol
More importantly, we now report for the first time that cannabidiol can selectively kill a subset of Gram-negative bacteria that includes the ‘urgent threat’ pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

So weed kills the clap?

gmnash··on Ivermectin for Prevention and Treatment of Covid-19 Infection
It's impossible to be an expert in every field, particularly those as complicated as medicine. Furthermore, you don't have to rely on authority, I linked to an RCT showing it was ineffective.

"Not particularly profitable", which is speculative, is still profitable. I highly doubt any one at Merck is actively working against selling a drug they already manufacture at a profit, but feel free to provide evidence otherwise.

gmnash··on Ivermectin for Prevention and Treatment of Covid-19 Infection
It's banned on YouTube because of multiple authoritative sources indicating it's not a safe and effective treatment for COVID-19.

Here is the FDA's stance: https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/why-you-shoul...

Here is the European equivalent of the AMA advising against it's use: https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/news/ema-advises-against-use-iv...

Here is an RCT in JAMA finding it ineffective: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2777389

And here is Merck, that sells Ivermectin, but whose vaccine didn’t make it through clinical trials, discouraging the use of Ivermectin for COVID-19: https://www.merck.com/news/merck-statement-on-ivermectin-use...

If Ivermectin worked on COVID-19, the manufacturer of Ivermectin that has made no money on vaccines for COVID-19 would probably be pushing it wouldn't they?

There have been some studies that found it effective in vitro, but as noted in other comments, at several times the safe dosage in vivo.

gmnash··on Lavender’s Soothing Scent Could Be More Than Just Folk Medicine
Curious if it could be related to the hormone disruption properties of lavender.

gmnash··on How I'm fixing the 401(k)
I am looking forward to this upcoming post about why you decided to avoid target date funds. Specifically I am curious how you calculate that target date funds have nearly twice the expense ratio compared to guideline. VFIFX (https://www.google.com/finance?ei=CWOOUpC2CO-bsgfSRw&q=VFIFX) has an expense ratio of 0.16% while guidelines is 0.13%. Cheaper, yes, but not twice as cheap.
