gmmeyer··on Show HN: Tired of duct-taping access control into agent prompts. Here's the fix
this looks very cool, it’s genuinely hard to manage all my claudes sometimes and i’ve tried to build something like this as well, though with much less success
gmmeyer··on HubSpot Acquires Clearbit
It's very useful for b2b people to know who is looking at your website and who might be good targets to reach out to. Knowing that Steve the SVP at Databricks is looking at your website vs cookie 1234 is a pretty key differentiator
gmmeyer··on Age of universe at 26.7B years, nearly twice as old as previously believed
The question is "how long has it been since the big bang." It's an important and relevant question for cosmology and physics. It isn't really a stance on the "beginning of time," which may have started long before this moment, but it is the start of the universe as far as physics is concerned.
gmmeyer··on A not so unfortunate sharp edge in Pipenv
Every solution in the space is bad and it's a wonder that any python software is maintainable and I think the only real answer is everyone gets fucked all the time with these bugs and rough edges

I say this as someone who has done an unfortunately large amount of work in the python packaging and python package distribution space and still get bitten every few months

gmmeyer··on Pitchfork: Rack HTTP server for shared-nothing architecture
My personal experience is that the bulk of the time these rewrites don't end up delivering the performance increases that people expect because they don't really understand what's making the prior system slow and don't develop good enough requirements

This is not saying you shouldn't, it doesn't really matter to me. But I think a lot of the time this is driven by engineers who feel like they need to do this rather than a financial decision to save money

gmmeyer··on LastPass confirms hackers had access to internal systems for several days
You don't wanna get hacked but basically everyone gets hacked, so it's more of a question of "how well does your security and monitoring stand up to hacking?"

The big red flag here is that they didn't catch it for so long! How did they not notice?

gmmeyer··on The best and worst of 1994 and predictions for '95
it's funny that web browsers parse Ps in there
gmmeyer··on FOMO is disastrous for company strategies
that is not the part of the parent comment I’m taking issue with though!
gmmeyer··on FOMO is disastrous for company strategies
I can just go buy a meta headset on their store, it's been that way a while I dunno if I would say there's a shortage there lol

Other headsets are more difficult to buy yea but the meta one is very much available

gmmeyer··on Show HN: I ranked news websites by speed
I think it's a bug when I visit drudge in the browser it extremely does not take 7 seconds until it's interactive
gmmeyer··on The Web's Timeline
yea the webpage is wildly incorrect, wikipedia is right
gmmeyer··on Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard
I have the G915tkl and it still works perfectly over two years later. Wild that you had such bad experience with them!
gmmeyer··on Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard
I have the gaming version of this keyboard and it's great: https://www.logitechg.com/en-us/products/gaming-keyboards/g9...

It never drops off, it feels great to type on. The lighting and everything is configurable, and will even light up the hot keys you need for a specific game!

It's a great experience. I have no interest in a customizable keyboard, I just want one that works.

gmmeyer··on On $600B of Y Combinator startup success
Hate to be pedantic but our star won't collapse it's not large enough for that, it will simply puff out and die leaving behind a very hot core called a White Dwarf
gmmeyer··on Give me back my monolith (2019)
IMO you should never create a new service unless it serves an engineer reason instead of an organizational one. There's a lot of tools to help out monoliths, and a lot of ways to make it easier to shard the monolith as well.

Some services need it, like a backend intake platform of some sort that needs to have radically different performance characteristics than a user facing frontend. But for most services it just does not make a lot of sense to do this.

gmmeyer··on In Defence of the Single Page Application
yea I agree, you should pick the right tool for the job but SPAs are probably overused
gmmeyer··on Natural Wine, Inherited Money, and the Delusions of the “Future-Rich Millennial”
Yeah it's a really reactionary attitude! Most people who say it though aren't really able to articulate the why it matters. Because they clearly at the same time think lots of poverty related issues, like homelessness, are issues we need to solve.
gmmeyer··on Switching from pyenv, rbenv, goenv and nvm to asdf
I've used Nix. It solves an interesting problem. It is so complicated as to be unusable by someone who is just looking for a quick and simple solution to something like a virtual environment

There's a reason why, despite being almost 20 years old, Nix has at best a small cult following. It just doesn't solve the problems that most people are looking to solve, most other solutions are simply easier and in many ways better

gmmeyer··on Ray Tracing for the TI-84 CE
I think it's a 4chan board
gmmeyer··on Ask HN: How did my LastPass master password get leaked?
There was a 1password to lastpass importer at that time, I know because I used it
gmmeyer··on Long-run effects of religious persecution: evidence from the Spanish Inquisition
This article makes me think about the internet conspiracy that the spanish inquisition invented Rome, which did not exist
gmmeyer··on You either die an MVP or live long enough to build content moderation
I remember it being a huge mix! It really depended on what boards you were on. There were boards I was a member of in 2003 that had very strong moderation and they were great!

I was also on some basically unmoderated boards and saw some stuff I wish I didn't see.

I think this is more indicative of the communities you were a part of than the actual behavioral norms of people at the time.

gmmeyer··on API Tokens: A Tedious Survey
tbh I actually do think this is an error. I worked someone where we didn't do this and I think of it as a bug rather than a missing feature. It makes it very difficult to identify the token if it's ever leaked without checking it against our database!
gmmeyer··on Poisson's Equation
Poisson's Equation takes another function as an input, the matrix is the representation of the output of said function
gmmeyer··on Return of the Mac (2005)
Really love this footnote: "[1] These horrible stickers are much like the intrusive ads popular on pre-Google search engines. They say to the customer: you are unimportant. We care about Intel and Microsoft, not you."
gmmeyer··on Avoiding Complexity with Systemd
To be clear it definitely used to be more buggy, but I haven't encountered a genuine bug in a long time
gmmeyer··on Avoiding Complexity with Systemd
I have never encountered the need for this and I honestly doubt you have either. Systemd fails mysteriously far less often than poorly written init files I have seen and it is honestly not that hard to debug almost every failure I've ever encountered. And I have worked on some very large scale systems with systemd. A systemd file I helped write has run many millions of times over without issue. I honestly find this comment impossible to believe
gmmeyer··on How to end up with 500k commits in your log
This is a truly bizarre article. The practice he is outlining here is wild, no reasonable company would do this. Lots of companies however end up with bizarre and dumb build systems for reasons of history, but this one is the strangest I have ever heard of. Even just reading the article I cannot really come away with a sense of how or why they did this and it is so strange that my brain doesn't wanna accept that it existed.

However, it's also bizarre because it seems to not just contain an explanation of this weird tech but a lot of vitriol. This guy seems to have outlined what was a dysfunctional place where a lot of junior people got a nice start to their career. This doesn't seem to me to be a good reason to badmouth the place. You as a senior engineer should be helping people to be better coders, not shitting on them for being junior developers. (And yes the owner was bad but that's no reason to shit on the juniors!)

I think if I were interviewing this guy and saw this piece I would immediately slam then Strong No Hire button.

gmmeyer··on Astro: Ship Less JavaScript
it seems like it's just an OSS project no need to make money
gmmeyer··on It's probably time to stop recommending Clean Code (2020)
wow this is a nightmare
