gmarx··on Ancient Romans depicted Huns as barbarians – their bones tell a different story
Came here to write this. I think it's the headline writer who made the error. The first part of the article just says the Romans thought they acted like animals. So the issue is really what was the culture of the Barbarians.
gmarx··on The Biggest Difference Between Coding Today and When I Started in the 80s
What, is that project gone? I used it recently. I'm too lazy to learn javascript
gmarx··on AQAP trying to hide explosives in laptops, official says
I've read that too. The scanners for luggage are much better than those for the security lines. They might even use machine learning to detect things. I don't remember the source. sorry

gmarx··on The Biggest Difference Between Coding Today and When I Started in the 80s
Haha- I couldn't be happier to be rid of it. I used GWT for a couple of projects. It's a good useful thing but it was like being back in the 80s (or mayber early 90s)
gmarx··on The Biggest Difference Between Coding Today and When I Started in the 80s
Another huge difference was how slow compilers were. Programming is a completely different task when you don't mind hitting compile. I remember programming as a kid in the 1980s with my older brother. He would hit compile and we would wait and wait and wait and finally get an error. After a few times he would slam his fists on the keyboard in frustration.

These days I sometimes compile rather than looking up the correct syntax for something.

Fast cycles changes everything. When you don't get up for a cup of coffee during compiles you program differently, learn about your code differently and can think abiout high level design more

When you sort by date it automatically groups them by today, yesterday, last week, etc. which is fine, but then within those grouping they are not sorted by date/time
gmarx··on Losing a dog can be harder than losing a relative or friend
I'm sorry to read it. My condolences. It will likely take a long time for those emotional events to slowly abate. Dogs are the best
gmarx··on Losing a dog can be harder than losing a relative or friend
Can confirm. No loss of a relative or friend has yet affected me the way putting my dog to sleep did. I raised him from a pup and he was with me through years of relative social isolation. He was so strong, then weak then I had to make a decision. It took years to get over it. I'd cry when I thought about him, even when certain songs played. Yes it's embarrassing when the death of your dog bothers you more than the death of your father, but that came after years of dementia. I dunno, I guess it isn't a contest

Thanks for the link. I thoroughly enjoyed that. I never thought about the character behind the name. heartwarming
gmarx··on Wages rise on California farms, Americans still don’t want the job
Thanks
gmarx··on Wages rise on California farms, Americans still don’t want the job
So if you raise wages there isn't instantly a group of people available who will do the work at those wages? So it takes time for things to adjust because that's how humans and cultures react to incentives? That's an excellent argument for never changing much of anything if you don;t feel like it.

When I was a kid the democrats were on the side of labor, like American citizens who work with their hands. It's a shame that now the leaders of both parties agree that cheap manual labor is a right that rich people and corporations have

This change occurred in my town as well at about the same time. How do you know you are getting cause and effect right? I always assumed that after the amnesty in the first Bush administration it was just easier/cheaper/better attitude to get mexicans and the restaurants stopped hiring the high school kids. I don't think those jobs were ever considered cool for the high school kids but money is useful
gmarx··on OpenEMR: Electronic Medical Records and Medical Practice Management Software
your faith in Microsoft and Google is heartwarming and hilarious. I've been hearing this for over 20 years, as soon as the real smart tech people get involved we'll have this problem solved lickity split. Well, both those companies have tried to lick healthcare and both ran away with their tails between their legs after they took a crap on the bed.

Healthcare information tech sucks because it's innately more difficult than most other problem spaces

gmarx··on OpenEMR: Electronic Medical Records and Medical Practice Management Software
Now you've hit my area of expertise. This might help enable large retrospective cohort studies but would not be sufficient. In order to do that the universal system would need to do several things which are unlikely: 1)Universal clinically meaningful data model 2) Extensive use of standard terminology codes 3) good model of timeline 4) user interface which encourages the entry of discrete data over free text
gmarx··on OpenEMR: Electronic Medical Records and Medical Practice Management Software
lots of people are working on the patient-centric record. No one has cracked the cultural problem and the integration problems. You would be requiring docs to re-enter most of the information in their own system.

Remember, the things we call EMR aren't primarily medical records, they are systems for sending the right codes to the billing systems

gmarx··on Google starts flagging offensive content in search results
I like the principle but predict this will ultimately be captured by people with a uniform point of view. There is far to much misclassifying different opinion or set of priorities as a "lie", these days.

I'd like it if they could label search results as "upsetting" or "tin-foil hat" and then let me set my filters to include or exclude them

gmarx··on Crazy at the wheel: psychopathic CEOs are rife in Silicon Valley
Agreed but if they started posting results people would then believe in its accuracy in proportion to the hatred they have of the public figures identified.
gmarx··on Problems with Kotlin
Wow. You're welcome and thanks! I don't know why it should make me feel good that a stranger on the internet took action in response to my comment, but it does
gmarx··on Problems with Kotlin
Here is a meta-comment that may seem irrelevant but I truly wonder about this odd tick of internet writing.

The title should be "Kotlin Sucks" or "Why I think Kotlin Sucks". The article doesn't say anything about the circumstances that lead to the sucking (e.g. the main developer suffered a serious brain injury midway through the project) he just lists and details aspects of it that suck.

This incorrect, misleading use of the word "why" in the titles of internet articles is so common I must ask, "why?"

gmarx··on Chekhov: “Cultured people must, in my opinion, satisfy the following conditions”
No, I meant "cultured" wasn't what he was describing,
gmarx··on Chekhov: “Cultured people must, in my opinion, satisfy the following conditions”
disagree that this is gentle. If you assume that every bit of advice implies that his brother is the opposite it's pretty bad
gmarx··on A gruesome legal case turned Voltaire into a crusader for the innocent (2015)
It says that you couldn't practice law in France without being catholic. The victim studied law but couldn't practice because he was protestant. That fascinates me. We tend to have very simple models of the past but this indicates some underlying complexity that I want to understand. Did he study law because he didn't think the rule would be enforced? Did he study at a law school? Why did they let him study if he was a protestant? Did he think the law was going to be changed? Did he think he would was going to lie and claim to be catholic but then changed his mind? What was it like being in that situation?
gmarx··on Chekhov: “Cultured people must, in my opinion, satisfy the following conditions”
This letter appears to be a drawn out detailed set of insults to his older brother. Maybe cultured isn't the best translation. Is this what we in the US would have called "classy" back then?
gmarx··on Farts can cause infection if the emitter is naked, but not if clothed (2001)
When I was a medical student I was assisting on an operation when I let loose with a horrible sulfurous fart. I was sly about it and made no noise. At some point the surgeon made a comment about how "it didn't smell too good in there" so I had to come clean; didn't want him further exploring and maybe cutting the abdomen to track down the smell.

I tell this because that story is rarely relevant in my life and also to tell you that farts actually are relevant in a surgical context. The study is not as silly as it sounds

gmarx··on Upgrade your jail cell for a price
No. The article seems mostly intended to generate outrage that bad criminals might get out of the ass-beating experience of real jail and have access to flat screen TVs
gmarx··on Upgrade your jail cell for a price
I agree in principle but I doubt enough rich people would ever get sent to jail to make a difference.
gmarx··on Upgrade your jail cell for a price
I don't see this as especially outrageous. The part that bothers me is that it isn't available to poorer criminals. But I don't agree with the ex-gang fellow who said getting your ass beat is part of the punishment. That seems unfair to weaker criminals in the same way this scheme is unfair to poor ones. I think the state has an obligation to keep inmates physically safe. If physical violence is something we want as an official part of the punishment let's just bring back corporal punishment.

Also can't help but notice the problem with making this more widely available. The violence in regular jail is a consequence of being locked up with violent people. If you move them to these easier jails they would bring the violence with them
