gmantg··on Can ageing be treated or cured?
Prepare your downvotes. Occult books tell that we have all means to nearly stop aging with today's tech and the key is in extracting and using the essence of oxygen; that air at the ground is what dooms us to aging and if we could access something at the top layers of the atmosphere, we'd find the key. Obviously, the books don't specify what that essense really is. If it's atomic oxygen, then it's a very aggressive substance. Ozone, that forms at the high altitudes, isnt health friendly either. What's left is the rather unique property of oxygen atoms - that their nucleus forms a rapidly rotating snake like coil - might be considered that essense, but I'm not sure how to use that to fix aging cells.
gmantg··on Apple says game streaming services violate App Store policies
Even simpler: Stadia is the remote desktop rebranded. Want to run your own Stadia? Buy a bunch of VMs on some cloud hosting provider: a few for the game server engine and one per user with game client code (those need GPUs); then let users remote desktop into the client VMs. Did I miss anything?
gmantg··on Levandowski sentenced to 18 months in prison as new lawsuit against Uber filed
Don't forget to be insanely smart. Otherwise programming skills won't help.
gmantg··on TikTok’s Chinese owner offers to forego stake to clinch U.S. deal – sources
That's why CCP banned them in China.
gmantg··on TikTok’s Chinese owner offers to forego stake to clinch U.S. deal – sources
Most smartphones are made in China, so CCP has access to them at the hardware level. My bet is that tiktok has hacked the human psychology: it's an equivalent of addictive sugary drink spiced with coke; it's a problem by itself, but it's a much bigger problem once we realise who manipulates the us citizens. I see tiktok as a backdoor into democracy: it can sway opinions of the masses or it can run social experiments.

An attempt to delay elections?

Well, you don't really "own" capital, you've "just" earned an authorization to spend some amount per year. It's like a debit card thats auto refilled every year. In the meantime "your" capital is being invested and reinvested by various firms. If you owned a valuable lake and deprived others from using it while you're alive, that would be a different story. But money? Meh, those are completely virtual constructs.
gmantg··on Data isn't just being collected from your phone, it's being used to score you
What do you mean? Why wouldn't an HR sue his own employer? Because binding arbitration and the employer will make sure to destroy the reputation of that HR.
gmantg··on Data isn't just being collected from your phone, it's being used to score you
Surveillance capitalism to the USA is like heroin to an addict: he thinks he can give up at any time, that he can manage the addiction and find the balance, until he realises that he is a slave to that addiction and can't change anything. The Congress could destroy this "big data is the new oil" business model, but they don't want to give up the money from big tech, they think they can manage this addiction and find a balance between greed and freedom, they find excuses that surveillance is a matter of national security today, but at the end USA will repeat the fate of that addict.
gmantg··on Data isn't just being collected from your phone, it's being used to score you
No need to disclose anything: plausible deniability is enough. And "bias" can be fixed by ad-hoc quotas.
gmantg··on Aristotle's Lost Book on Magic (2018)
It's the same thing. There were posers and those with practical knowledge. Today it's almost entirely clueless posers.
gmantg··on Major new climate study rules out less severe global warming scenarios
My opinion is irrelevant here. I'm not giving orders to suspend or resume the economy.
gmantg··on Major new climate study rules out less severe global warming scenarios
They probably know that visible effects of global warming won't manifest themselves until a century later: enough time for them and their kids. They don't care about their hypothetical grandkids. When the world starts collapsing in a century, they expect to have machines to fully replace 99% of the workforce: so most of the populace will fight for scare sources of clean water, while the rich would live somewhere in new Zealand, protected by unapproachable army of machines. That's what I think is their plan. However, I also think it's a naive plan.
gmantg··on Major new climate study rules out less severe global warming scenarios
If this was indeed such a problem, the world would be on a strict lockdown for next few years. It isn't happening because the expected global warming is too far in the future: too far for the ruling class to care. Downvote all you want.
gmantg··on If We Weren’t the First Industrial Civilization on Earth, Would We Ever Know?
The "legend" is that every civilization gets buried under a thick layer of earth, so we'd have to dig real deep, hundreds of kilometers deep, to find anything.
gmantg··on Oregon, Journalists Sue U.S. over Portland Arrests, Violence
I think these minivans is a rational and smart move (amoral, but that's another story). The protest is snowballing and there's not enough police-like forces that blindly support the current regime. The administration understands that victory loves preparation and starts preparing now: they normalize the minivans, so people get used to them and won't question this later when millions of such minivans show up on streets. Generic outfit and lack of ID allows to hire just about anyone to work as a police-like force. My bet is that "the minivans force" will get out of control once they realise that nobody is looking after them. On a side note, I know that many rich and wealthy people have expressed a sudden interest to spend an extended vacation in new Zealand a few month ago.
gmantg··on Tech sector job interviews assess anxiety, not software skills: study
Networking can in fact overturn results of the interview loop. In some cases, the result is known and the interview is arranged to support the case. You may outright fail some questions, and still get a green light from those interviewers.

gmantg··on Don't close your MacBook with a cover over the camera
This is what audit records are for. Unless you expect the bad guys to respect your schedule, you won't be around to see the LED light.
gmantg··on Don't close your MacBook with a cover over the camera
Just pick a material that's opaque only in visible spectrum.
gmantg··on Don't close your MacBook with a cover over the camera
Or to put it simply "to detect the single frame grab attack". LED lights can't prevent anything.

gmantg··on How remdesivir works, and why it's not the ultimate coronavirus killer
It's an acronym for Wuhan Coronavirus. There are many coronoviruses and it's natural to use the place of origin to distinguish it from others. This is how we name other species and things in general. In science this is called binomial nomenclature.
gmantg··on The dying mall’s new lease on life: apartments

gmantg··on Show HN: Hacker News front page in the style of a print newspaper
Interesting idea. I couldn't open the site, though, because uBO blocked something like 50 domains and figuring which ones are actually needed would be quite an effort. Yes, my uBO blocks everything unless I make an exception.
gmantg··on Senators propose lawful access to encrypted data
All these lawful warrants are pretty cool until the administration issuing them gets compromised. The thing is this has already happened and criminals at the top are now looking for ways to cement their power and prevent any competition. I believe the anti encryption laws will be used against politicians who dare to change things.

All these laws are rarely good faith laws, but mostly are "rules" set by your older brother: he wants you to behave a certain way, but obviously has no intent to follow the same rules. So if we look at the proposed "law" thru this prism, we see "some senators deliver a message from the bigger players that those don't like that common folks can hide their communications and want to end this practice."

gmantg··on Mobilewalla used cellphone data to estimate the demographics of protesters
YC is right, though. People who play by others rules rarely succeed. All these senior managers, vps, execs, business owners arent known for following the silly rules.
