glintik··on Test
Congratulations to DoD for hiring new junior dev.
glintik··on Full text search over Postgres: Elasticsearch vs. alternatives
Postgres has very limited features related to FTS, so it is useful only for very simple cases or for very limited budget. Elasticsearch is stable enough(but good devops and devs needed) and has numerous of features. Anyway Elasticsearch is not a "plug and play" solution and requires much work to be done for good search quality. Why I know this all? I'm running ecommerce search startup, based on Elasticsearch as primary storage.
glintik··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2024)
Looks like Swedish is a requirement?
glintik··on Ask HN: Freelancers, how do you get work?
You mixed two very different things: business and freelance. Some people just want to sell their hours and not do business.
glintik··on Ask HN: Why is nobody manufacturing low tech electric cars in 2024?
The downside of Zoe is Renault. For its tech price should be much less.
glintik··on Ask HN: Why is nobody manufacturing low tech electric cars in 2024?
That’s a good catch. I also wondered because there are vast amount of people want just personal vehicle to move from A to B.
glintik··on Ask HN: Why is nobody manufacturing low tech electric cars in 2024?
They are nor low tech, not a real budget cars.

In fact, monolithic solution is much faster to ship. And cheaper. And much easier to support.

glintik··on We migrated our PostgreSQL database with 11 seconds downtime
11 seconds downtime - looks like devops had a break for smoking
glintik··on Slashing data transfer costs in AWS
Reliability differs, right?
glintik··on IT employment grew by just 700 jobs in 2023
Will be funny if AI hype slashes more IT jobs.
glintik··on Ask HN: Netflix doing mass layoffs today?
What is considered as mass? 10, 100, 1000, 10K? Number matters.
glintik··on Ask HN: What are good books on SW architecture that don't sell microservices?
Actually you should avoid splitting software into microservices by default until you really need it. It's easy to catch the moment - you will see that movement of some project part into microservice will help you to close many points and issues.

So: 1) Read classic books about monolith software. 2) Read decent books about microservices approach.

glintik··on Gitlab Critical Security Release: 16.3.4 and 16.2.7
Nice hypothesis, but far away from the reality
glintik··on Gitlab Critical Security Release: 16.3.4 and 16.2.7
Oh, critical issue again. Looks like Gitlab needs security officer to help to prevent this.

glintik··on Russia Starts Blocking VPN Protocols
Old news, guys. This was just a test for couple days. No any blocks now.
glintik··on Fly.io Postgres cluster down for 3 days, no word from them about it
They have Status page and don’t reflect host issues there. I’m sure, they didn’t understand what Status page was created for. And don’t respect users. Go away from Fly, if you respect yourself.
glintik··on Creating a search engine with PostgreSQL
Actually good ranking is the most valuable thing in search engine.
glintik··on GPT-4 API General Availability
> We definitely want to investigate these and the billing issues further. What’s a problem for OpenAI engineers to get web access logs and grep for 4xx/5xx errors?
glintik··on PostgreSQL reconsiders its process-based model
Mysql guys: Smart move, Postgres!
glintik··on Why Perl?
> However, it requires a lot of discipline and experience

That’s true for any platform - Java or PHP. Perl has less support in modern IDE. Perl 5 to 6 transition failed many times so ecosystem lost many talents.

P.S. I wrote and supported large Perl codebases, no rocket science to manage it, if you do it right.

glintik··on Tell HN: Cloudflare is locking out Linux users
Looks like you guys don’t use Linux as desktop? )
glintik··on Zeal is an offline documentation browser for software developers
Offline documentation browser for sad and unlucky developers without internet.
glintik··on When “free forever” means “free for the next 4 months”
I think, they need another nore skilled Product Manager. Offer "Free Forever" is a big mistake. Silently closing it - another big mistake. Instead of the first they could offer user count limited version. I.e. 10 users max, $10/month. The same as Atlassian did with Jira. Instead of the second, they could offer 50 or even 70% special discount from paid plan($10/user/month) to move free users to paid plan. Company gets money and users loyalty and no negative.
glintik··on Google Authenticator now supports Google Account synchronization
OMG, aftet so many years Google was able to hear users! Before this update I had to use two phones synching them manually.
glintik··on In 2019, Volkswagen decided to create a car OS. How’s that going?
VW has awful software processes. ID3 cars parked for half a year before VW guys were able to fix major bugs is a good sign to buy another brand.
