I can't resist linking this bit of linguistic humor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igh9iO5BxBo

glandium··on Lucasart's Afterlife
Leisure Suit Larry was Sierra, not LucasArts.
glandium··on Reynard: A real Firefox web browser for iOS 13 or later
For instance, rust doesn't support PAC yet https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/73628. Support for PAC wasn't even in upstream LLVM for a while (it now is, but lld still doesn't support it).
glandium··on I hate compilers
Claude code is actually rather good at this. If your initial testcase is not too big, you can use creduce or cvise.
glandium··on Google changes its search box
It's quite unsettling to be served English AI-dubbed videos randomly on Youtube, where the original is another language you normally default to (Japanese) and it's happy to use in most cases. And then you go to the settings for the video to go back to the original and it tells you it is... Chinese (and no, it's really Japanese).
glandium··on Google changes its search box
Funnily enough, I have the exact opposite problem, where Google likes to give me results in the configured main language even when I do queries in another and actually want results in the other language.
glandium··on Warcraft III Peon Voice Notifications for Claude Code
Fair use doesn't mean you can placate any license you want on it.
glandium··on How Google Maps allocates survival across London's restaurants
I don't know about other countries, but in Japan, maps will show underground passages from e.g. the metro, with exit annotated with their numbers...

Unfortunately, not all numbers are shown, even when all the exits are non-overlapping at the displayed zoom level.

glandium··on Firefox profiles: Private, focused spaces for all the ways you browse
--no-remote doesn't do anything anymore. It was removed about a year ago if memory serves.
glandium··on Why Is SQLite Coded In C
And, in fact, these implementations exist. At least in Rust, there's rqlite and turso.
glandium··on How AI hears accents: An audible visualization of accent clusters
That would be interesting for sure, but considering you don't hear yourself the same way someone else or a mic does, I'm not sure it would have the benefit you're expecting.

> How do you not look up travel destinations before heading out?

From the layman's perspective, they did. That's the whole problem.

glandium··on Everything from 1991 Radio Shack ad I now do with my phone (2014)
Phones in Japan used to receive actual TV. Well, slightly different, but still directly from the waves rather than the internet. Phones used to receive AM and FM, too.
glandium··on Google Pixel 10 series review
> The Pixel build of Android is now just as customized as Samsung's One UI or OnePlus' OxygenOS, if not more so.

sigh

glandium··on Why are anime catgirls blocking my access to the Linux kernel?
> sells its access data

or has it leaked somehow.

glandium··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
I have both and they're surprisingly essentially the same size. Except the iPhone has less bezel and is thicker. I only have the iPhone for dev purposes and I actually prefer the Pixel 3a, but I'm afraid it might die soon...

Anyways, are you sure you're talking about the iPhone 16?

glandium··on Bypassing Google's big anti-adblock update
Where did "check feature, not browser name" go?
glandium··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
> Nobody blames the resistance during the Nazi occupation for what they did.

Are you really sure about that? Maybe now, but while it was happening, I'm not so sure everyone was on board. Quite the opposite.

glandium··on Launch HN: Issen (YC F24) – Personal AI language tutor
Here's the problem: pitch accent is easy to hear in isolation and/or in comparison. Under real life conditions, in the middle of a sentence, it's a completely different experience. But then you're saved by context. Because candy is most likely not falling from the sky. Homophones that are still ambiguous in context are possible, but a rare occurrence in my experience.
glandium··on Launch HN: Issen (YC F24) – Personal AI language tutor
Somewhat more important, but as someone with decent Japanese who knows about pitch accent but can barely hear the difference in real time, and never actively learned it except for the few well known examples like bridge/chopstick, I don't think it matters all that much. Yes, you'll sound foreign. But you'll be understood nevertheless, in the vast majority of cases.
glandium··on Launch HN: Issen (YC F24) – Personal AI language tutor
> Natural language acquisition is almost entirely listening and talking.

And it's bootstrapped by 1+ year of listening before being even able to speak, let alone talk intelligibly. That's not really an appealing process to anyone beyond that age.

glandium··on “Why is the Rust compiler so slow?”
That is kind of surprising. The sqlite "unity" build, has about the same number of lines of C and takes a lot longer than that to compile.
glandium··on Honda conducts successful launch and landing of experimental reusable rocket
Mazda also comes from the founder's name: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jujiro_Matsuda
glandium··on Jemalloc Postmortem
Note this requires hackery that relies on Apple not changing things in its system allocator, which has happened at least twice IIRC.
glandium··on Have I Been Pwned 2.0 is Now Live
There's something interesting in the domain search: some breaches contain addresses that... simply don't exist. Like B2BUSABusinesses has sales@mydomain.
glandium··on Mozilla Firefox – Official GitHub repo
You don't need a Github account to `git clone https://github.com/some/repo`
glandium··on How a 20 year old bug in GTA San Andreas surfaced in Windows 11 24H2
The article mentions using breakpoints, so they did use a debugger.
glandium··on They made computers behave like annoying salesmen
> I assure you that if you prompt me to give you a rating in the app store that you do not want my rating.

This recently got egregious. Android itself is now showing these prompts for the Messages (SMS) and Phone apps! Like What The Actual Fuck?!

glandium··on Pitfalls of Safe Rust
It's the same in at least Python, so it's not a Rust idiosyncratic behavior. The "absolutize" method you're asking for exists since 1.79. https://doc.rust-lang.org/stable/std/path/fn.absolute.html
