A `PushEvent` is fired for every open source repository that has `master` updated:
``` SELECT COUNT(*) FROM ( TABLE_DATE_RANGE([githubarchive:day.], TIMESTAMP('2017-03-01'), TIMESTAMP('2017-03-31') )) WHERE type = 'PushEvent' ```
It's over 19 million!
However, let's not fool ourselves: services like Codeplex, Google Code, or Sourceforge, that are not updated or providing new value, are going to be left behind and abandoned. In other words, their continued service wasn't providing any value, to their users or "competitors", because they weren't evolving.
I would rather people put their open source project on a code hosting service that is someone's priority, not just one that exists and is useless.
A) Imagining the video artifacts; and B) Also moving my mouse around to get rid of them
I'm so glad I'm not the only one these past few months!
I've been harassed on Instagram by people asking me to update an open source project I let go of five years ago. While it may seem neat and flattering, the reality is that it's incredibly disturbing.
Out of curiosity: how many users do you have, and what measurements are you using to determine scalability?
Disclaimer: I work at GitHub.
We coordinated with Facebook to do that. ;)
If you're working in Slack or chat, you've got a minimum of half a dozen people typing and putting out suggestions and offering to investigate something. That's all time stamped. And even if you're not doing that real-time, you may be using something like a GitHub issue to discuss the problem via comments, which are also time-stamped.
No one at the moment of the incident is probably going "Ah, it's 8:01, better write down that I identified the problem." It's most likely "hay I think I got it one sec" and then that works. Or doesn't. But hopefully it does.
It'd be remiss not to mention my own Ruby gem, https://github.com/gjtorikian/mathematical. It does La/TeX conversions by wrapping C code, though admittedly, it only converts the math portions.
Saying nothing never meant we weren't doing anything. It meant we could've been better saying something. :)
In unrelated uncreepy news, we are practically neighbors! One block over on Steiner.
In reality this has been very much a non-issue. Users we contact are generally okay with not bloating repos, and we point out Releases / Git LFS as alternative places to store binaries / large assets.
The documentation lays out the workflow: https://help.github.com/articles/configuring-large-file-stor...
As does the website: https://git-lfs.github.com/ (see: "Getting Started")
That's a bit disingenuous. GitLab purchased Gitorious--of course people are switching.
It's not showing up in the color bar, though. Loggin' dat issue.
