gjmveloso··on Show HN: Ant – A JavaScript runtime and ecosystem
Great start, clean ergonomics and API surface.

Does `antx` executions are sandboxed by default using `ant:sandbox`?

gjmveloso··on Accenture to acquire Ookla
I don’t think I would trust Downdetector in the hands of a company that its main business is consulting some of the same business to assess.

Imagine a large Accenture business being down. Would they provide that evidence even when that could harm their own SLA commitments with their clients?

I would trust Datadog more with https://updog.ai/

gjmveloso··on Microsoft drops AI sales targets in half after salespeople miss their quotas
"They just have no taste" - Steve Jobs

Microsoft had a great start with the exclusive rights over OpenAI tech but they're not capable of really talking with developers within those large companies in the same sense Google and AWS are rapidly catching-up.

gjmveloso··on Ten Years of JMAP
JMAP is the best email protocol out there that nobody uses (besides Fastmail), sadly.

It would be great that the two big email providers (Google and Microsoft) implemented and supported it.

It would make so easier and reliable to have a single client that works really well across personal and business email accounts, for example.

gjmveloso··on Introducing The Model Context Protocol
Let’s see how other relevant players like Meta, Amazon and Mistral reacts to this. Things like these just make sense with broader adoption and diverse governance model
gjmveloso··on Launch HN: Regatta Storage (YC F24) – Turn S3 into a local-like, POSIX cloud FS
Feels like FSx for Lustre without the complexity. Definitely what EFS could be.

Congrats on the launch!

gjmveloso··on Microsoft TypeSpec
It’s a lot of language for a DSL to define services. Smithy[1] sounds more balanced and extendable

gjmveloso··on TextMate 2.0
Would be great seeing the community bringing Language Server Protocol[1] and other goodies to TextMate

gjmveloso··on Microsoft is Dead (2007)
Microsoft was dead until 2014, when Satya Nadella becomes CEO and bring company back to life, almost how Steve Jobs revamped Apple in the late 90’s
gjmveloso··on Keras vs PyTorch
Why not mxnet[1]? Or even better, Gluon[2]?

gjmveloso··on Atom 1.28
There is no reason for Microsoft keeping two Electron-based code editor.

Would be nice to see how both communities from VSCode and Atom can work together and drive an even better coding experience with an unlimited extensions ecosystem.

Both Atom and VSCode are great!

gjmveloso··on After the end of the startup era
I don’t think it’s the end of the startup era at all. It might be the end of startup hype ending on itself, with valuations not tight to reality and companies without business.
gjmveloso··on Segment raises $64M led by Y Combinator
Congrats!

Great people, great product and great contributions to OSS. Well deserved and keep rocking!

gjmveloso··on Still locked out of my AWS account
Glad to hear that ;)
gjmveloso··on Horizon 1.0: a realtime, open-source JavaScript back end from RethinkDB
Great move, RethinkDB folks!

I'm looking forward start prototyping some apps using Horizon. On a first look seems very promising.

Congrats!

gjmveloso··on Common foundation of great engineering cultures
Thanks for the feedback. I've already added the book you've mentioned on my wish list. Hope to read it soon.
gjmveloso··on Meet Microsoft, the world's best kept R&D secret
If this P&D budget was splitted on long-term-10-years-go-to-market products and really useful and fast increments on current Microsoft products, maybe Microsoft could be the current Google. Or Apple ;)

It's weird a company have the funniest R&D labs and its main product - Windows - still sucks with 80' Windows Registry structure or a file system which fragments a lot.

gjmveloso··on Why everyone hates MongoDB
Great point! 10gen is growing really really fast (and receiving a lot of funding to sustain that). The newly-released Education channel is great.

And I really didn't understand other people complaining about 10gen marketing capabilities ;)

gjmveloso··on Why everyone hates MongoDB
For sure, MongoDB was not production-ready before 2.0 version but I really think 10gen is doing a really great job on it. A lot could (and will be) improved, lets keep going.

MongoDB stills young and received a ton of attention for its promise. And is really unfair trying to compare it with 20+ years technologies.

MongoDB users stills pay the price to be an early adopter and I'm confident we are doing a great deal and learn a lot.

gjmveloso··on Start-Up Chile opens a new application process
But the SUP entrepreneurs are doing really great job, organizing themselves into groups and mentoring each other with a lot of practical results. It's just about creating a truly ecosystem ;)

gjmveloso··on Bad News: Google Is Doing The Corporate Future-Vision Video Thing
With a simple difference: Google executes their vision faster than Microsoft's and Nokia's future visions.
gjmveloso··on Ubuntu for Android
It's the official debut of PC Plus Era. This will be huge if Canonical and Google works together. Outstanding!
gjmveloso··on Berlios closing down
Nowdays, open source repos providers should be a mix of community engagement initiative and real business. Like GitHub and BitBucket.
gjmveloso··on Opening a US Corporation: an Incorporation Guide for Foreigners – Part 2
Valuable tips for foreign business. Keep the good job on this post series. Waiting for Part 3 ;)
