gizmodo59··on Governor vows criminal prosecution of reporter who found flaw in state website
We won’t know it for sure. Most of the state is not technical so it’s whatever the popular media spins it.
gizmodo59··on O&O ShutUp10++ – Free anti-spy tool for Windows 10, 11
Not sure why macOS (M1) is expensive here. For the hardware/performance/software you get it’s not really expensive if you compare the alternatives like surface or any of the intel based laptops. Sure, you can get a cheap laptop for under 500$ but that won’t last long either.
gizmodo59··on O&O ShutUp10++ – Free anti-spy tool for Windows 10, 11
Off topic:

Unfortunately I can only use windows 10/11 as AMD has no driver for RAID on Linux. https://www.amd.com/en/support/chipsets/amd-socket-strx4/trx...

Using Asus hyper with 4 nvme drives on RAID. Anyone else in this situation?

gizmodo59··on Scientific why attractive people are more successful in life
If you forget about the genetic qualities and focus on pure hard work on mind and body, this shouldn’t be surprising. By pure Darwinism, if you are fit mentally and physically your odds of success are higher by any means. Granted there are always outliners but on an average this is trivial.
gizmodo59··on NASA Is Launching a New Telescope That Could Offer Some Cosmic Eye Candy
From wiki: “By the mid-2010s, the U.S. contribution was still expected to cost US$8.8 billion. In 2007, the expected ESA contribution was about €350 million. With the U.S. and international funding combined, the overall cost not including extended operations is projected to be over US$10 billion when completed”
gizmodo59··on All public GitHub code was used in training Copilot
I hope they don't shutdown the project with all the legal nightmares.
gizmodo59··on Why Logitech Just Killed the Universal Remote Control Industry
Apple TV can be turned on from your mobile. (Not just Apple TV but your actual TV along with it too)
gizmodo59··on Why do people think that the US won WW2 in Europe?
Not sure why that would be the case. A lot of Brits understand that while Britain survived WW2 it was the US that came out strong and helped to end WW2 compared to any other nation on earth (except Soviet Union) with not only technology dominance but also economic and in many ways cultural.

This also has a personal bias as I want the US to be remembered and not the UK who I think has done so much damage around the world pre WW2 in the name of colonialism including my home country.

gizmodo59··on The global chip shortage is starting to have consequences
Building a fab takes lot of time. Plus you need to hire the right talent in the same region. And by the time you can do it may be we will be past this supply issue. (Or may be that’s why we don’t do it now? Not sure)
gizmodo59··on When Wiener Met Einstein
This was fascinating:

“ Indeed, ominous for Einstein to predict that the leadership of civilization would pass to America and ultimately Asia. Einstein‘s admiration for the United States appears to have begun in 1921, when he visited New York City for the first time. As he then wrote in an essay entitled ‘My First Impression of the U.S.A.’, he was surprised to find that “What strikes a visitor is the joyous, positive attitude to life […] ”

gizmodo59··on Best practices for writing SQL queries
Even there someone needs to read them eventually than just the person who wrote it. Single letter aliases are just evil. In some ways it’s the same as doing: String x = “Hello”
gizmodo59··on End of support for Firefox on Amazon devices
Out of curiosity, why did you choose firetv and firestick compared to the alternatives? (Apple TV, roku, chrome cast etc). I’m trying to decide
gizmodo59··on Open source is not a business model (2018)
I have never been to IKEA to get food and then bought furniture as an afterthought. It kept me in once I’m there but it did not get me in the first time. Granted I live 40 mins away from IKEA.
gizmodo59··on Build your own “data lake” for reporting purposes
There are several advantages compared to CSV, JSON or other non-columnar formats as far as analytics is concerned which are typically not transactional.

https://blog.openbridge.com/how-to-be-a-hero-with-powerful-p... https://stackoverflow.com/a/36831549

And with projects like Apache Iceberg you can also have ACID transactions which will make it easy to update or delete just using SQL. This really opens up the separation of compute and data and you can use any engine you want (spark, drill, hive, impala, athena, dremio, redshift spectrum etc) on top of your files.

gizmodo59··on Build your own “data lake” for reporting purposes
For my home projects I generate parquet (columnar and very well suited for DW like queries) files with pyarrow and use Dremio (Direct SQL on data lake): https://github.com/dremio/dremio-oss (https://www.dremio.com/on-prem/) to query them (minio or just local disk or s3) and use Apache Superset for quick charts or dashboards.
gizmodo59··on Excel Never Dies
One of those things that I wouldn’t google myself as it’s a minor annoyance and yet when I see a tip like this it definitely makes me feel good about the time I spend on HN :D
gizmodo59··on We Test PCIe 4.0 Storage: The AnandTech 2021 SSD Benchmark Suite
No. I spent way too much time in installing those drivers as it was not a smooth experience. Will give it a shot! My specs:

3990X, 265GB DDR4 3200Mhz, Asus Rog Strix E-Gaming

gizmodo59··on We Test PCIe 4.0 Storage: The AnandTech 2021 SSD Benchmark Suite
I recently got the Asus Hyper and 4 Sabrent Rocket NVMe disks and had them in RAID0. The speeds were just stunning to say the least at 15GB/s. Getting the drivers to work for the boot drive on Windows 10 was a pain though. AMD's RaidXpert requires you to do manually install the drivers in a specific order while installing Windows to recognize it.
gizmodo59··on The Great Filter – Are We Almost Past It? (1998)
When you realize that even if by some miracle we find a way to travel at really fast speeds we will never explore 99.99999% of the universe is mind boggling.

This video by Kurzgesagt explains it well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZL4yYHdDSWs

gizmodo59··on USA vs. Julian Assange Judgment
Maximum security prison + solitary confinement is way too harsh for this issue IMHO.
gizmodo59··on Startup Stock Options – Why A Good Deal Has Gone Bad (2019)
You don't have to unless you sell I think. Similar to real stocks you don't pay tax on stocks. You pay tax when you sell them.
gizmodo59··on AWS CloudShell
I think something like this: $gcloud alpha cloud-shell ssh

I love to be able to use my terminal client than browser. This is neat because I don't want to maintain another ec2 myself even if its in the free tier.

gizmodo59··on Ask HN: How did Apple manage to create such a better chip than Intel?
Can you explain what you mean by Apple's use case vs general purpose chips?
gizmodo59··on Apple Silicon M1 Disruption
I have seen so many articles on HN in front page about M1 over the past few weeks. Like a curious child I read all of them because somewhere in me I want to believe there exists a possibility of a giant leap for Desktop/Laptop. Having tried it myself, I should say this is going to be remembered just like the iPhone in 2007.
gizmodo59··on Teddit: a free and open-source Reddit front end focused on privacy
Dark mode, no ads, similar to old.Reddit.com layout. That’s all I need and this is good. Hope it’s not in some violation of Reddit and gets taken down.
gizmodo59··on Amazon EC2 Mac Instances
The limitation is only from Big Sur. AWS chose to do it on Catalina so that customers may not experience a big change later on. This means any provider who uses < Big Sur is in compliance.
gizmodo59··on Carmack on Apple successfully migrating from 68k to PPC to x86 to ARM
A notable anecdote from Carmack's post:

"One time, my wife, then fiancée, and I were meeting with Steve at Apple, and he wanted me to do a keynote that happened to be scheduled on the same day as our wedding. With a big smile and full of charm, he suggested that we postpone it. We declined, but he kept pressing. Eventually my wife countered with a suggestion that if he really wanted “her” John so much, he should loan John Lassiter to her media company for a day of consulting. Steve went from full charm to ice cold really damn quick. I didn’t do that keynote."

gizmodo59··on Conservatives flock to Parler, claiming censorship on Facebook and Twitter
This whole thread is going to be:

* I'm not a liberal but..

* I'm not a conservative but..

* Twitter may be a private company, but..

* Freedom of speech but...

If there is a new view point on how to analytically break such news down that would be great to hear indeed!

gizmodo59··on SaaS Needs a Single Point of Purchase
It’s called as master service agreement (MSA). Here is an example: https://www.contactually.com/platform/enterprise-master-serv...

The steps to complete a transaction at any Fortune 500 company are usually: NDA, proof of concept, MSA or short form MSA, PO.
