givan··on New finding: 600M years ago, a single mutation changed everything
insights into life at that time rely on researchers’ imaginations

Where is this 600M years taken from? big claims based on assumptions, I don't like this kind of science, building on too many assumptions and you are going too far from the truth and this is the opposite of what science tries to achieve.

givan··on An Optimist's Reply to Ezra Klein
Aren't startups creating wealth?http://paulgraham.com/wealth.html

I can't say the same about the financial system where banks were bailed out with public money or big companies "legal" tax evasion etc, this is the inequality people complain and Ezra was pointing out.

givan··on On Becoming an Individual in an Age of Distraction
This decade brings something new, communication is mostly done through devices, this wasn't possible before and this type of communication has a very narrow channel and a lot of information like body gestures, eye contact etc are lost.
givan··on Economic Inequality: The Simplified Version
We need to lower economic inequality so that more people have a chance to start startups, now you need savings and a lot of hard work only to convince an incubator or an investor and most people don't even have that chance.

Maybe we should start taxing corporations the same way we tax the average person, no more tax heavens and special tax laws, everyone pays the same unique percentage from earnings/profits and from the extra cash the government can provide a social service to allow everyone who meets certain requirements to start a startup.

Unfortunately governments are bought by corporations and they get special treatment, they get bigger and not only we all pay higher taxes because they pay less but it's also harder to start a company because of oligopolies and government special treatment for the 1%

givan··on Why do we still not know what's inside the pyramids?
Ancients could build complex mechanical devices https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antikythera_mechanism maybe the technology was even older.
givan··on Why do we still not know what's inside the pyramids?
Why do we still think that they were built with chisel and hammer when we know is impossible with these tools to cut the stones from king chamber to laser precision or cut stones to make a perfectly symmetric pharaoh statue?
givan··on American parenting is killing the American marriage (2014)
Life is not limited to economics.
givan··on CISA passes Senate
What is the bigger picture here, what is really happening?

Europe also wants to regulate internet traffic, at the same time an internet law is passed and both us and europe want a broader commerce union with TIPP.

Are all these tools implemented to eventually censor people who will disagree with all that is coming with this new union? something like china does with everything that is against the party? what are they trying to do to our society with these baby steps?

givan··on To save on weight, a detour to the moon is the best route to Mars
We still use chemical propulsion almost everywhere from cars to rocket engines, a breakthrough in propulsion systems will not only make solar system exploration feasible but will be greatly beneficial to our society by reducing pollution and costs.

We need the next steam engine for a new industrial revolution, space exploration and our society depends on it.

I think that all space resources should be channeled into this, our current approach to solar system exploration is the same as trying to explore the world by foot, expensive an inefficient and no matter how big our ambitions are we don't have the technology to accomplish them.

givan··on The Disturbing Consequences of Seeing Your Doppelgänger
I don't view the "electrode stimulation and see what happens and then believe it's probably the same as patients experiences" as something scientific.

Given that we don't exactly know how the brain works, what if out of body experiences are real and the scientific explanation just tries to fit it in the general accepted world view as a brain bug just because it's too strange?

givan··on NSA announces plans for transitioning to quantum resistant algorithms
If they managed to make quantum calculations does it mean that it validates the many worlds/multiverse theory?
givan··on NASA estimates 1B ‘Earths’ in our galaxy alone
We are so special, the only intelligent species in the galaxy etc reminds me of the sun revolves around earth statement a few hundred years ago, the fact is we don't have the technology to explore even the closest stars, even our own solar system is unexplored, think europa, so making statements about life in the universe based only on one planet is science fiction.
givan··on NASA’s Kepler Mission Discovers Bigger, Older Cousin to Earth
What are the odds that this is just a sunspot?
givan··on Hn Downvote notes
You want to censor yourself based on down vote reasons?

Even if sometimes it seems strange to receive a down vote there are many people with different opinions and even if they told you the reason it won't help you much, other than entering a time consuming debate I don't see what else you can do.

https://xkcd.com/386/

Down votes increased because hn got bigger, and it only means someone disagrees with you, why do you see it as a punishment?

givan··on When will we find aliens?
Even scientist are humans and have eyes, is the same bias, you don't need special equipment/training to see something as big as a football field moving in the sky blocking stars light without making a sound and still think that is a military craft.

Also having thousands confirm the event rules out a hoax, on top of that the former governor who was also a trained pilot could easily identify flares or other military plane. You need to look at all the evidence and details.

To have a piece of alien technology you can only have it if you receive it, you or me will surely not be that special to receive it and if world leaders will have the privilege you might never know.

Also it's enough proof to hover that big craft in mid day over a big city but for whatever reasons they still give us a chance to doubt, I suspect that the reason is to avoid panic as a big percentage of world population is still religious and not ready yet but they still give us a sign that we are not alone.

There are 4 videos shot from the event on youtube that you can watch, also high definition cameras still don't have very good optics to focus on moving objects at high altitude, a better sensor alone will not help much with the video quality especially in the night.

Also these kinds of events are very rare so there too many things, like good camera with good lenses, tripod, being in the right spot, last long enough etc to be in place to get that clear hd video.

givan··on When will we find aliens?
Even if thousands of people saw something out of this world is not enough of evidence? What is an extraordinary evidence for you?

I hear this extraordinary evidence claim text often and I think that people that say it in fact ask for an official government statement or a live tv streaming of a landing etc but they will never get it because the government will never admit that is not the absolute power unless it's too obvious to deny it and also to avoid population panic.

givan··on When will we find aliens?
This doesn't change the fact that it did happened, there are thousands of witnesses, also the governor who was a former pilot admitted that it was "otherworldly".
givan··on When will we find aliens?
Maybe they already did http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Lights but we are too afraid to officially admit it unless it's too obvious to deny it.
givan··on Wearing a Suit Makes People Think Differently
It's strange how suits became a standard for government officials, big business and everyone that want's to look "serious" in all countries over the world, it shows how the western culture conquered the entire world.
givan··on Why would an animal lose its brain?
Why being poor or living outside western culture means less intelligent?
givan··on “Hello World” in assembly language on Linux
I think it's # ld hello.o -o hello
givan··on Distraction is a kind of obesity of the mind

givan··on What Would You Recommend to a Bright 14 Year Old?
The Fabric of Reality - David Deutsch

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Deutsch#The_Fabric_of_Rea...

givan··on The Quantum Mechanics of Fate (2014)
> An atom that normally emits light will cease emitting when its surroundings become incapable of absorbing that light. Thus one event (emission) depends on something that does or doesn’t happen in the future (absorption). “That’s one of the examples of a particle probing the future and seeing what’s there, and then making a decision based on it, and just not decaying

Using the above analogy the message sent from the future (the man exists) to the past will prevent the grandfather to be killed just like the decaying atom, maybe the messages send back and forth from the future rewrites the events to prevent the paradox, something like backtracking until it works.

givan··on Why science is so hard to believe
> So yes, anti-vaxxers, anti-GMOs, anti-nuclear, et al. are wrong. Stupidly wrong.

Why is that? Another reason people lost trust is the arrogance of some scientist that seem to ignore the complexity of their subjects and don't see the limits of their research.

Also people like you that believe that everything that has gone trough a scientific study must be true, science can also get it wrong sometimes, don't stop thinking and questioning.

givan··on Black holes do not exist where space and time do not exist, says new theory
Having so little evidence and information about the phenomena http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole#Observational_eviden... the entire theory around black holes is a mathematical model that probably has nothing to do with the real phenomena.
givan··on What Is Aging? Most Scientists Still Get It Wrong
The purpose is survival, failing to adapt means extinction.
givan··on What Is Aging? Most Scientists Still Get It Wrong
Our species changes a little bit with every generation, it's called evolution, delaying or canceling this process will have negative effects on our specie because it will stop adapting at our constantly changing environment, we might live longer as an individual but we might die as a specie breaking something we don't understand.
givan··on What Is Aging? Most Scientists Still Get It Wrong
Aging is encoded in our DNA with a purpose, if we will be able to fully understand how DNA works me might be able to partially disable it but will we want to? maybe when we will reach that level of knowledge we will also have the wisdom to understand the implications.
givan··on What Is Aging? Most Scientists Still Get It Wrong
Unfortunately it's just talking, there is no real progress in either space exploration let alone colonization or aging, hygiene and antibiotics was and it's still is the only thing that prolonged life in the last century, we still have a long way in both directions.
