gitfan86··on Xzbot: Notes, honeypot, and exploit demo for the xz backdoor
It would be similar but the payload is going to be abnormally large compared to other failed login attempts.
gitfan86··on You won't find a technical co-founder
In summary, people with the ideal skill set required for this job do not work for free. You are better off raising money and paying the market rate for these skills.

"But my idea is great! I'm sure an engineer will understand and work for equity"

The problem is that Angels/VCs have a lower bar for seed investment than the engineer. So if you can't get seed investment, it is a bad signal.

gitfan86··on Xzbot: Notes, honeypot, and exploit demo for the xz backdoor
Yeah, but then you would have ssh traffic without a matching login.

Wonder if any anomaly detection would work on that

gitfan86··on “Emergent” abilities in LLMs actually develop gradually and predictably – study
That is true, but only in a philosophical sense.

AI is on a path to outperform humans at a large number of tasks and jobs that previously would have been described as requiring intelligence.

gitfan86··on Key Stable Diffusion Researchers Leave Stability AI as Company Flounders
I was contacted by a Forbes writer for a hit piece, and his pitch on why he wanted to talk to me was clearly a lie.

They feel that they are entitled to be dishonest while writing articles about how CEOs are dishonest.

gitfan86··on How OpenAI's Sora Model Works
Once again we see that scaling laws are the way to better output.

This is why Sama said compute is the currency of the future.

gitfan86··on Nvidia Unveils Blackwell, Its Next GPU
The demand for compute increases dramatically as the functionality and reliability go up.
gitfan86··on Nvidia Unveils Blackwell, Its Next GPU
Assuming that the hardware isn't a moat because other people make similar hardware is a mistake.

The networking alone is a huge bottleneck at scale. A competitor has to be better at networking AND chips to be competitive.

gitfan86··on Thoughts on the Future of Software Development
I'm the opposite. I enjoy engineering and understanding systems. Manually coding has been a necessary to build systems up until now. AWS similarly was great because it provided a functional abstraction over the details of the data center.

On a personal level I feel bad for the people who enjoyed wiring up small data centers or enjoyed writing GitHub comments about which lint rules were the best. But I'm glad those are no longer necessary.

gitfan86··on Devin: AI Software Engineer
Yes, but AGI will first emerge from keeping state between calls to multiple models and assessing how closely they resemble humans intelligence, and using a loop to keep it going and updating the state. Which is what they are basically doing here
gitfan86··on Intel Gaudi2 chips outperform Nvidia H100 on diffusion transformers
The Model Y is the best selling car in the world in 2023. Those of us who were buying in 2019 are still up quite a bit even though the stock was higher at one point. RIVN, Ford, GM all are losing a lot of money on every EV they sell. We were right to bet on TSLA being a major winner.

I actually put 40% of my TSLA into NVDA last year, because the demand for AI hardware is going to keep going up. I'm not saying the stock will never go down, I'm sure it will be volatile, but don't confuse short term volatility with long term technologic transformations.

gitfan86··on What Extropic is building
At a high level it is the right answer to the data center electricity demand problem. Which is that we need to make AI hardware more efficient.

Pragmatically, it doesn't make much sense given that it would take years for this approach to have any real work use cases in a best case scenario. It seems way more likey that efficiency gains in digital chips will happen first making these chips less economically valuable.

gitfan86··on Ask HN: Why is the crypto booming again?
SPY is far less volatile than BTC and pays dividends.

GLD is an ETF that tracks gold.

BTC is for gambling.

gitfan86··on Ask HN: Why is the crypto booming again?
The same reason stanley cups got super popular for a bit. Herd mentality and lack of regulation.

This is kind of the main use case for crypto. Fear and Greed

gitfan86··on The Era of 1-bit LLMs: ternary parameters for cost-effective computing
That is the plan. Even if these independent software improvements don't create 10x improvements NVDA and others are making huge improvements.
gitfan86··on Microsoft strikes deal with Mistral in push beyond OpenAI
There is a bubble in the valuations of LLMs similar to the valuation of NFTs. Anyone can create a modified version of Llama2.
gitfan86··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
This fundamentally misunderstand what LLMs are. They are compression algorithms. They have been trained on millions of descriptions and pictures of beaches. Because much of that input will include palm trees the LLM is very likely to generate a palm tree when asked to generate a picture of a beach. It is impossible to "fix" this without making the LLM bigger.

The solution to this problem is to not use this technology for things it cannot do. It is a mistake to distribute your political agenda with this tool unless you somehow have curated a propagandized training dataset.

gitfan86··on Agile Is a Tainted Term
The good news is that it is easy for engineers to start their own companies and keep these people out at first at least.

You will still get cold emails and LinkedIn messages from these people but you don't have to respond

gitfan86··on Solar and battery to make up 81% of new US electric-generating capacity in 2024
In some scenarios the solar is only deployed because of batteries being deployed in the same network. The batteries are providing energy when the sun is down.
gitfan86··on Consumption of 100% Fruit Juice and Body Weight in Children and Adults
I'm genuinely curious as to why you are avoiding the topic of this thread?

Is it possible that someone who regularly eats 4000 calories of pizza and fast food in a day would gain less weight than someone who eats 800 calories of bread in a day?

gitfan86··on Consumption of 100% Fruit Juice and Body Weight in Children and Adults
Yes, all those people in concentration camps just had high metabolisms and we're not being starved by the Nazis.

And all the obese Americans eating pizza and fast food regularly just have hormone issues.

gitfan86··on Consumption of 100% Fruit Juice and Body Weight in Children and Adults
Water is healthy, but drowning is not.

It is the same concept, your body can only process and use a limited amount of carbohydrates before it makes you obese and give you diabetes.

You can only drink a cup sized amount of water at a time. A building sized amount of water dumped on you would kill you.

gitfan86··on World surpasses key warming threshold across an entire year
Why can't humanity survive an increase in 10 degrees? I understand polar bears or other animals that need specific levels of Ice or vegetation in specific areas, but humans are an extremely adaptive species.

Edit: I'm getting a lot of responses. It seems like there is a general misunderstanding of what happened during the previous ice age. Humans existed during the previous ice age and humanity survived a major increase in temperature. Obviously any tribe or culture that needed to be able to walk across the bearing straight didn't survive, but humanity did. And without any modern technology.

I get that an unknown future is scary, but just giving into the gloom and doom isn't productive. We need to increase out technologies for many reasons, not just climate change and we can survive and thrive, even if the world will be different that doesn't mean it will be terrible.

gitfan86··on Launch HN: AgentHub (YC W24) – A no-code automation platform
Very Cool, one of the missing pieces to AI being useful in business tasks is dynamic internal validation steps. I would suggest adding a couple of those out of the box. For example if the user expect JSON format out of the LLM, add a validation step that send the output back to the LLM to ask it if it is actually JSON. Then you can expand on that to more validations like "is the output polite". The ultimate solution is having the LLM build the validations itself.
