gitfan86··on Panic at the Job Market
I have also been in the industry for 20 years, I get where he is coming from, I also "failed" interviews at GOOG and AMZN for the reason he explained, but I'm not bitter, in fact I feel guilt if anything for how easy my life has been as far as work goes.

Being the guy that actually understands the infrastructure means you never get fired because they know they really need you from time to time.

But overall those of us that got into software and hardware 20 years ago did it because we enjoy it. We are in a much better situation than the faker people who are doing this work out of necessity.

gitfan86··on U.S. now short 4.5M homes as housing deficit grows
My concern is that the market incentivizes building at the higher end. People who can "only" afford a 4m home will be helped by the home builders who will build plenty of 3m homes but the people who can only afford 400k are getting very few homes built for them.
gitfan86··on FlashAttention-3: Fast and Accurate Attention with Asynchrony and Low-Precision
I'm not saying it is impossible for other companies to build good and profitable products. Google, AMD, Tesla all have good AI systems.

I'm saying NVDA uses their own chips to help build more chips, AND they are intricately involved in the buildout of the 100B data centers and intricately involved in TSMC roadmaps. That with the combination of huge profits that are increasing create even more advantages over competitors.

Obviously this doesn't go on forever, NVDA will never have 100T of profit in a quarter. Years from now the feedback loops will have diminishing returns and there will be commodity AI systems eventually.

gitfan86··on FlashAttention-3: Fast and Accurate Attention with Asynchrony and Low-Precision
No one person or one company SHOULD have huge control over humanity, I agree.

But practically speaking this is a unique time in history of technology because there are quick feedback loops that cause that flywheel you mentioned to be a insurmountable first mover advantage.

gitfan86··on "AI", students, and epistemic crisis
The goal of teaching is to help students learn. By showing the student Perplexity the student would learn the value of sources and how he can get to those sources using a "search". It is unrealistic to think that there is any value in teaching students the Dewey Decimal system for finding sources.
gitfan86··on "AI", students, and epistemic crisis
Perplexity links to sources. All he has to do was show the student the same search on perplexity.

I do feel sorry for professors like this that cannot adapt to technology changes at the rate they are happening

gitfan86··on Silicon Valley's best kept secret: Founder liquidity
I don't the the author is saying that founders don't deserve 400k after 7 years of hard work.

He is saying that it is sketchy that this is hidden from employees.

gitfan86··on Super Heavy has splashed down in The Gulf of Mexico
If you had extremely big light weight wings it would help, but the materials that can do that don't do well when heated up
gitfan86··on I got tired of hearing that YC fired Sam, so here's what actually happened

gitfan86··on I got tired of hearing that YC fired Sam, so here's what actually happened
Also strange that PG didn't know that Sam had invested in OpenAI through YC until today.
gitfan86··on Ex-OpenAI board member reveals what led to Sam Altman's brief ousting
He has done an impressive job over the past few months in interviews where he says lots of word with zero substance.
gitfan86··on OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show
Yes, if she lost movie roles or other contracts because people assumed they could license the OpenAI voice then she could claim she was harmed. However OpenAI removed the voice and this situation is widely publicized. So it is hard to prove that she is being harmed now
gitfan86··on Falcon 2
Judges don't enforce bad contracts.

Imagine if a landlord sued a tenant after 1 year for a new roof of an apartment because the contract stated that "tenant will be responsible for all repairs" but the tenant pointed out that the contract also said "the house is in perfect and new condition".

Both things cannot be true, so the judge throws it out.

Same thing here, you can't grant someone a license to use something and then immediately say, "You can't use this without checking with us first" it is contradictory.

gitfan86··on Falcon 2
Yes and No. If the full text of the license is "You must contact us for written approval before doing anything with this product" then yes that can be enforced.

But a document like this which basically has a bunch of words followed by a "Just kidding" line, are not enforceable, because it contradicts the previous language. A judge would throw the whole thing out because it doesn't meet the standard of a contract.

gitfan86··on Telegram has launched a pretty intense campaign to malign Signal as insecure
It is kind of too late at that point. Good security requires proactive measures.
gitfan86··on GPUs Go Brrr
Maybe because that is a VERY different problem than the one discussed here.

Building a single analog chip with 1 billion neurons would cost billions of dollars in a best case scenario. A Nvidia card with 1 billion digital neurons is in the hundreds of dollars of range.

Those costs could come down eventually, but at that point CUDA may be long gone.

gitfan86··on Creepy Study Suggests AI Is the Reason We've Never Found Aliens
The Fermi Paradox implies that some percentage of advanced civilizations would desire to physically explore many star systems.

This assumes that advancements in physics don't make that activity less interesting to the aliens.

gitfan86··on 23% of bachelor's degrees and 43% of master's degrees have a negative ROI
Very few non profits are run by people who do not want to increase their own income and career prospects.

The end result of that is the organization as a whole is primarily focused in increasing revenue. Anyone who says "should we cancel this program due to the low job prospects for current graduates "will be ignored or fired by the people who would make less money in that scenario.

gitfan86··on Tech workers want to build a co-living 'campus' across a square mile of SF
I've been living in SF for 8 years and this is hilarious and on brand.
gitfan86··on Google workers fired for protesting Israeli contract file NLRB complaint
Ok, but how is that relevant to the Google employees motives?

Are you just changing the subject?

gitfan86··on Google workers fired for protesting Israeli contract file NLRB complaint
The consequence of their actions is that they receive high social status from people with similar politics and Google makes zero changes to their contracts with Israel. And that was obviously going to be the result of these actions.

If you want to attribute their actions to a genuine desire to help the Palestinians, that is fine.

gitfan86··on NASA lays out how SpaceX will refuel Starships in low-Earth orbit
The only reason air travel is affordable to middle class people is due to the economies of scale.

This is the same goal with SpaceX. To drive the price of ton to orbit down a lot. That is the only way a city on Mars happens.

gitfan86··on Stripe de-couples payments from the rest of its stack
It is the pretext for becoming a central bank.

First they will move payments off of government currency and onto crypto. Then they will move payments onto their own crypto. At that point they can issue credit and modify the money supply at will.

gitfan86··on Google Earning Q1 2024 [pdf]
That is what corporate HR and Executives want you to think.

Layoffs can make it look like the company is having problems so instead of doing that they will create vague KPIs so that employees will not meet them so they can be fired.

gitfan86··on Daily coffee consumption at 20-year high
Eliminating caffeine will be the next trendy health thing to do.
gitfan86··on Mercedes becomes the first automaker to sell autonomous cars in the U.S.
Are you sure about that? If it starts raining or the sun goes down, the system isn't going to alert the driver to take over?
gitfan86··on Tesla to lay off more than 10% of its staff
The context of the thread is people not buying Tesla because of the CEO. My point is that the people making these decisions are quite ignorant to the behavior and opinions of products that they do buy.

That inconsistent buying choice behavior is interesting and I brought it up. Sorry if that makes you upset.

gitfan86··on Tesla to lay off more than 10% of its staff
So you do understand that traditional CEOs have PR people that filter the public from their true thoughts. Did you also know that those PR people work closely with legacy media by giving extra access in exchange for favorable articles?

My point isn't that you should agree with Elon's tweets, but just to ask if you know why it is that you are familiar with his thoughts but not the thoughts of CEOs of companies that you give money too.

gitfan86··on I Tried Tesla FSD
I can't wait until people with DUIs lose their license permanently since there is a safer alternative
gitfan86··on I Tried Tesla FSD
For people who have not been following FSD closely it is important to understand this is the equivalent of GPT-3. The RoboTaxi will be running the equivalent of GPT-5.
