gilrain··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Actually, most women don't like being assaulted, regardless of the attractiveness of the assaulter. Additionally, this is true of humans generally, not just women.

It's really gross that you think of women as so alien and inhuman.

gilrain··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
This comment is extremely ignorant across several of its statements. Ignore.
gilrain··on The Mafia may be keeping fentanyl out of Italy
> If you think about it, it is weird that they even make articles out of statements that only "may" be true.

I thought about it. And it's very stupid to imagine uncertainty should be off limits. I hope that isn't what you meant.

gilrain··on Mathematicians want proof OpenAI didn't use their work
Why are people so greedy? Why can't they wait to be given something, or remain content without, rather than take from others by force? I'm genuinely curious too.
gilrain··on Icy Moons Are Ocean Worlds
That's no moon.
gilrain··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
Or search engine ads, natch. My eyes rolled out of my head.
gilrain··on Hang on to Your Firefox
Thanks! I had no idea they added a paid option.

This is a brilliant browser for iOS/Linux usage, and now its UI is minimal, and its settings are filled only with stuff for my benefit. It feels like the early 2000s again! This should be much more ballyhooed.

gilrain··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
> I have first hand experience.

You can't have first-hand experience of "usually" where that applies to multiple people.

gilrain··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
> Chronic depression doesn't usually have a "cause"

Is that true or your guess?

gilrain··on Changes to Sourcehut's terms of service regarding LLMs
Correct. This is specifically what covered my uses of the service:

> to review your work, to ask questions of, to perform security analysis

gilrain··on Changes to Sourcehut's terms of service regarding LLMs
It's not a nitpuck to me: reading the comment I replied to, I assumed I needed to cancel my Sourcehut subscription. In fact, I don't. That's a lot of information to've left out of so many pull quotes.
gilrain··on Changes to Sourcehut's terms of service regarding LLMs
It would be less misleading to also include:

> Moreover, the use of AI for purposes other than co-authoring code, tickets, emails, and so on, is discouraged but not prohibited. If you use LLMs privately to review your work, to ask questions of, to perform security analysis, and so on, and then write original code to push to SourceHut, your use-case is aligned with our policy.

gilrain··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
Not really: as far as we know, you use it for nothing; the person you replied to gave examples.
gilrain··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
> decided to make stalking DHH into a personality/lifestyle

> When wolves get out of control, you shoot them. When gypsies take over public spaces, you deport them.

An intellectually honest guy like you is probably so furious that DHH makes a personality out of stalking entire peoples. Pathetic++, right? :^:

gilrain··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
So, a Linux distribution.
gilrain··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
His rhetoric has crossed into the murdery kind, actually:

> When wolves get out of control, you shoot them. When gypsies take over public spaces, you deport them.

You don't get to make this contrast and pretend you didn't. The only way his rhetoric could be more clear is if he bought a gun and shot them himself.

gilrain··on The August 17 outage
What are the top 3 you remember? You say you can’t speak for all of it… can you speak for any of it?
gilrain··on The August 17 outage
> I've made a language learning app for myself. Its working better than Duolingo so far, for me. Its not really public

On the other hand, famine is coming. Come back and read this next year. Was your dalliance worth these food shortages?

gilrain··on How to disable or avoid intrusive AI
I’ve never had an issue accessing necessary services from Linux. Once, literally, I had to use a Chromium browser — but presumably that would have been the case off Linux, as well.

What services are you thinking of that gate at an OS level?

gilrain··on How to disable or avoid intrusive AI
Are you their dad?
gilrain··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
Best writer I’ve ever seen not understand writing. Proof positive that you needn’t understand something to produce lots of it!
gilrain··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
Then why didn’t the Buddha kill more people, thus removing the cause of their suffering?

Because you can’t remove someone’s attachment to themselves… terminating them isn’t the same thing. What you must terminate can be found only in yourself, nowhere else. And it isn’t your life that you must terminate, but your self.

Get off HN if you care about spirituality.

gilrain··on AI isn’t outthinking mathematicians, it’s out-remembering them
You asked an LLM to reason about you, for you, and it said you’re an adroit reasoner? It must have context we lack!
gilrain··on Ask HN: Do you know of any company that went back to hand-written code?
> I am currently in consideration for doing this

Try “I am considering”.

gilrain··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
You don’t get to be unattached to the lives of others; only your own. What ugly thinking to cloth in Buddhism!
gilrain··on Firefox is now the last major browser that still supports uBlock Origin
None of that means it’s “illegal”. You apparently think something being removed to reduce legal risk means it’s illegal, but that doesn’t follow.
gilrain··on Firefox is now the last major browser that still supports uBlock Origin
The other browser they pay for isn’t the first alternative I’d run to…
gilrain··on Understanding is the new bottleneck
> It is impossible to duplicate results with an LLM.

Humans are called experts in many domains whereby they cannot achieve duplicate results. In fact, in what domain can an expert do that?

Nobody crosses the same river twice.

gilrain··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
My partner and I adore our childfree lives… not worrying about them suffering climate change is just the gravy!
gilrain··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
I hope what you’ll discover to be wrong needs only $5000 of repairs.
