gildandstain··on Debate May Help AI Models Converge on Truth
Sounds like they applied insights from Mercier and Sperber's "The Enigma of Reason", namely that perceiving truth is hard, but sorting arguments by quality is much easier. Or -adversarial reason-giving as the engine of collective knowledge

Location: Portland, OR

Remote: Yes! (and hybrid if local)

Willing to relocate: No

Technologies: TypeScript, React, Tailwind, NextJS, Sanity CMS, Node, Python, PyTorch, Netlify, Vercel, Figma, Storybook, Chromatic

I'm a frontend engineer with lots of experience building fast, fun, accessible user-interfaces. I've worked for startups, enterprise clients, agencies, museums, and artists. I built a robot actor for a theater company and an ML-driven real-time font-generator that you can read about here: https://zackrdavis.github.io/fonting-with-gans-2

I'm looking for close collaboration with designers and product managers, where I can use my design sense and technical chops to their fullest. Specifically, I'd love to help break ground on UI-for-AI puzzles, but I'll be happy anywhere I get to build tools for creating, learning, or understanding data.

gildandstain··on Vernor Vinge has died
Such a loss! He fused good-hearted optimism and mindbending data-architecture (and mind-architecture) into ripping plots.

And +1 for Marooned in Realtime. The awesome scale reminds me of Greg Egan, but it highlights Vinge's particular genius for imagining side-effects of the technological premise.

gildandstain··on The Collected Stories of Vernor Vinge
And all this time I thought Twirlisp was just caricature of off-base, know-nothing commentors. I guess the lesson is: do read all the comments, and carefully.
gildandstain··on American Climate Corps
That term has been used for negative externalities of industrial practices for many decades. In fact, according to Wikipedia, "the commons problem is one of the ten most common system archetypes." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_archetype#Tragedy_of_th...)

Still, I think I agree with you that the villagers are not the level to look for a solution.

gildandstain··on American Climate Corps
I definitely agree that the solution to this tragedy-of-the-commons problem is going to come from the government. It's the only entity big enough to coordinate and muscle solutions into place, and it also has a responsibility beyond financial profit.

Experienced developer, strongest in the frontend but eager to work across the stack. I’ve built SaaS frontends for startups and enterprise clients, websites for museums and artist foundations, and a robot actor for a theater company. I love communicating directly with clients, tight feedback-loops with designers, and prototyping unique UI. Seeking a team with a mission that I can get excited about: tools for social good, creativity, education, or analytic insight.

gildandstain··on The Precipitation Problem
Every bit of infrastructure built with rainfall in mind will be operating outside parameters. And the new rainfall pattern won't ease smoothly into place, it'll thrash from year to year for who knows how long (decades?). Farming isn't designed for that.

Wake me up when CO2 has been stable for 500 years.

Experienced developer, strongest in the frontend but capable and eager across the stack. I’ve built SaaS frontends for startups and enterprise clients, websites for museums and artist foundations, and once, a robot actor for a theater company. Previously built a robot actor that gave 32 performances in Europe and the US. Enjoys weird problems. Gentle personality. Excited to learn and contribute among experienced teammates.

I've been working in webdev for 8 years. I'm strongest in the frontend, especially in rigorously matching complex and nonstandard UI spec with React and SCSS. I've also built servers in Node and Python, dabbled in robotics, and tuned deep learning models for vision text/image generation. I like to solve weird problems, and I pick up new tech quickly.

gildandstain··on Voxon hologram volumetric display (2019)
Correct me if I’m wrong, but this setup can’t render non-transparent volumes, at least when the occluding surface is darker.

The transparent volumes it renders do look great, and seem to make sense for medical/mechanical problem-solving and Disney rides.

gildandstain··on Show HN: I'm building a robot that performs haircuts [video]
The Flowbee seems like a natural pairing for this project. I've never used one, but it looks like it eliminates the finesse factor for getting all the hairs of a given length in a given stroke.

And of course reduces itchy cleanup.
