giladvdn··on Grok Build 0.1: Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
They're going to have quite a tall ladder to climb to become the "top model". Currently on LMArena they're nowhere near the top [0] in any of the important categories.

giladvdn··on U.S. Science Is in Chaos
Exactly. One side prefers being miserly on science while spending lavishly on needless wars.
giladvdn··on Living human brain cells play DOOM on a CL1 [video]
For me the issue isn't with the killing/eating of animals. Rather, it's how they are treated during their lifetime by the meat industry - which is essentially optimizing for the minimum conditions that can still provide meat that can be sold legally. I'm not a vegan by the way, but I can appreciate the moral case vegans make.
giladvdn··on Show HN: Generate your personal HN recap for 2025
It’s doable. Let’s see how this thing goes and we’ll take it from there.
giladvdn··on Show HN: MTXT – Music Text Format
Probably stating the obvious here, but this would be a good way for an LLM to attempt to write or modify music.
giladvdn··on Grok 3: Another win for the bitter lesson
If you're an engineer capable of holding a $440k/year job then you should care where your talent goes and who benefits from it. There are plenty of places that will pay you a good salary where the boss isn't trying to badly play at world domination.

giladvdn··on Intel details Skymont
How do these modern Atoms compare to the Apple ARM chips? Does Apple make something comparable in terms of power/performance?
giladvdn··on Ask HN: What is the least obnoxious way to ask for cookie permissions?
This would make for a great blog post: top 10 things that ruined the internet. I nominate generative AI for the version of this post two years from now.
giladvdn··on Ask HN: What is the least obnoxious way to ask for cookie permissions?
You can use IP based tracking or something like a query parameter to track within that session
giladvdn··on Ask HN: What is the least obnoxious way to ask for cookie permissions?
Yes I think I’ll post the design here when it’s done.
giladvdn··on Ask HN: What is the least obnoxious way to ask for cookie permissions?
Huh, I think I agree. Not only are the banners slow, obnoxious, have a tendency to being manipulative and are different for every website, a web developer can easily ignore the user's choice and track them anyway. Apple made a big leap with the “ask app not to track” and I think browsers should have this as well. If only to get rid of those infernal banners.
giladvdn··on Analog computing may be coming back
Interesting analogy, and I see your point. What I'm trying to say is, we know that there's way to perform certain computations that's orders of magnitude more efficient than we've ever achieved. We have a working example of it. And yet, we choose to develop a wholly different technology, from scratch, that's unproven, instead of trying to emulate or understand what already have.
giladvdn··on Analog computing may be coming back
The absurdity of suggesting optical computing is a good pathway to efficiency is that our brains efficiently use electrons and are doing just fine.
giladvdn··on Telegram - secure, free messaging
Came here to say this. I also don't understand why "secret chats" can't be kept in the cloud. Why can't they store encrypted messages and give them to me to decrypt when I want to?
giladvdn··on Things about being a founder I wish I had known two years ago
TBH, I've never been fired. I have fired a handful of people. All of them have been fired after more than a week (in some case, much more). I believe that all of them could have been fired earlier, saving both us and them a lot of time and trouble.

I know this is a black-and-white type of argument, and in real life things are obviously more complicated.

giladvdn··on Things about being a founder I wish I had known two years ago
Good point. I did not consider people relocating for the job. In that case, I would want to try the person out before actually hiring her. If that's not possible, then obviously I wouldn't recommend ruining someone's life logistically for the sake of getting a better hire.

My main point was that after a week you'll probably either get along with an employee or not get along with them. In my experience, if you don't get along with someone, it usually does not get better over time.

giladvdn··on Ask HN: Looking for email delivery for 500k subscribers
MailChimp allows you to buy credits as you go, or pay them monthly by subscriber count. It's also built for marketers so after importing your list there your marketing guy should be fine.

If you're looking to do it cheaper, SendGrid offers a newsletter function that's less easy to use and has less features but will allow you to do it cheaper.

giladvdn··on Instant splash pages for iOS apps
Fixed! Thanks for the feedback Randall!!
giladvdn··on Number Script - A Little Language that compiles to JavaScript
Not sure this actually qualifies as a compiler. All it does is (Python): return int(code.encode('hex'))
giladvdn··on Facebook's Browser is Google's Worst Nightmare
That would be the easiest route probably. There's a big difference between "Facebook's Browser" and "A Facebook Toolbar for Firefox". You can't really do a toolbar for Chrome (just one icon per plugin).
giladvdn··on Facebook's Browser is Google's Worst Nightmare
Thanks, fixed.
giladvdn··on Fastest Way to Lose $50 - Our Failed Admob Experiment
I liked the first comment (in the post) by Andrew Maine. Basically, it's simple math. If you expect a 5% conversion on a $1.99 app (which will earn you $1.39 after Apple's cut), the most you can spend for a viable business model is 6 or 7 cents per click.

Less if you want to make an actual profit on the app and not just get more users. But then, if you want more users, maybe the app should be free?

giladvdn··on Quirksmode is seeking to raise € 2,500 in donations
Yup I donated too. Quirksmode is a very useful site and I'd hate to see it stop.
giladvdn··on Previewing Windows 8 (Video)
I'm a developer. A touch screen UI doesn't benefit me too much, just like I think it won't most business users. But maybe I'm wrong. We'll have to wait and see :)
giladvdn··on Previewing Windows 8 (Video)
Isn't taking a phone UI exactly what Apple is doing with Lion too? The large icon matrix and "full screen apps" are exactly what you see on an iPhone/iPad. Though it does feel more "optional" on the Mac relative to this video.
giladvdn··on Previewing Windows 8 (Video)
How will this work for people doing real work on their PCs? Apple (with Lion) and now MS seem to be treating power users as an afterthought after trendier tablet users. Don't get me wrong, I love the new stuff MS is doing on WP7, for example. But I still need a PC (or a Mac) for most of my work.

Is it just me?
