gil··on Libtorrent adds support for the WebTorrent protocol
The only problem I see here would be created by themselves. The price they pay for postponing questions is losing WebRTC and those "serious applications" in the meantime.
gil··on Show HN: Squawk – Walkie Talkie for Teams
Did you find anything with those features already? I have a very similar scenario and I'm currently exploring what is available.
gil··on Show HN: Squawk – Walkie Talkie for Teams
I looked into TeamSpeak when searching for a multi-channel PTT tool a few weeks ago and couldn't find a way to listen to multiple channels and talk/reply to each channel individually. Does TeamSpeak support that?

I ended up having to compile from master what was a very recently merged feature to Mumble: https://github.com/mumble-voip/mumble/pull/4011

gil··on Formula 1 launches Virtual Grand Prix Series to replace postponed races
This will be entertaining due to the well known driver names BUT not high level by any means:

"Due to the wide variety of gaming skill levels amongst the drivers, game settings will be configured in such a way to encourage competitive and entertaining racing. This includes running equal car performance with fixed setups, reduced vehicle damage, and optional anti-lock brakes and traction control for those less familiar with the game."

More like a "So You Think You Can Dance" celebrity edition than anything else.

A much higher level event which also includes some IRL drivers from multiple series is: The Race All-Star Esports Battle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_a_RV5UY8mk) Higher level mostly because they race in rFactor2 which is a better simulator than F1 2019 and there are no driver aids. Also because everyone on the grid are long-ish time sim racers, even if some of them also happen to be IRL drivers (Max Verstappen, Felix Rosenqvist, Antonio Felix da Costa, a few others)

Here's a good list of motorsports eSports events for the next few days: https://the-race.com/esports/the-complete-motorsport-esports...

gil··on How to be anonymous in the age of surveillance
Even if they do:

  * They are aware of those, and therefore may use other countermeasures.
  * The masking still reduces the "surveilance surface".

gil··on The Awkward but Essential Art of Office Chitchat
> I think the essential office chitchat issue is "being yourself" vs. "seeming like a high quality professional". I've found out the hard way that relaxing and aiming for a real conversation carries a high % chance of saying something unbecoming of a team leader.

Indeed, this is a very good way to put it. Although I do understand people who say silly things at the lunch table without a second thought - they value fun and genuine social interactions more than "upward mobility".

If you can't be yourself for at least 8h/day and you also can't be yourself after that, because you shouldn't base you social life around your co-workers, then who are you? And when are you allowed to be yourself? Weekends and bank holidays? Fuck. That.

We would all be happier if we were allowed to be ourselves all the time. Maybe by hopping around until landing on a cluster of likewise co-workers who can see the "high quality professional" side by side with the crazy cat lady or the punkrocker.

But again, I think your decription is correct and that we live within a very sad state of affairs.

Why does being regulated by Lithuania make it look it like a money-laundering scheme?
gil··on A Career Cold Start Algorithm
Got it, thanks.

Perhaps the parent was trying to conceal the identity of the person in question and gender would be too much of a giveaway.

gil··on A Career Cold Start Algorithm

Can you explain why, please?

Comments like this, while factually correct, are the reason why we need these books.

Raise awareness, at least.
gil··on Evernote's New Privacy Policy Lets Staff Read Notes to Improve Service
I for one would be more than happy if they organized them too while they are at it.

Too many times I use Evernote as a dump of everything and end up with ideas, email addresses, random names for people/services/brands/wtv, book/movie/music titles all in the same note that I then need each into their correct notebook and note at a later time. The problem is that there is never a good later time.

gil··on Google has reportedly stopped developing its own self-driving car
Which tells me there's something fundamentally wrong with the automotive (for these specific examples, but there are others) industry.

Funny you quote that.

There is a song by DJ Koze with that in the lyrics and I always wondered where it came from.

I was indeed going to ask why Jerez? I've been there a few times for the F1 tests and never really saw much more than that but now I feel that I probably missed something.
gil··on The mystery of India’s deadly exam scam
I don't think that it is fair to compare corruption in Portugal (and perhaps in any other Southern European countries) with the kind of corruption described in the article.

Yes, you can find corruption over there and especially a lot of influence and favour trading BUT at least people are aware that it is both criminal and wrong, not a way of life or "the way things work".

gil··on Islamic State has shifted to Telegram from Twitter
Indeed.

It also begs the question of how will the scan for "illegal material"?

gil··on Testing for common sense violation in airline pricing
Yes, that is indeed a downside, plus if you have hold luggage you have to consider the extra time to get it out of the first plane and checking it in to the second one which might well not be possible if the transfer time is as little as 30 minutes.

But assuming you have margin for that and since we are comparing the two same flights, we can assume that our loss is also the airliner loss, hence they will make everything they can to make the transfer work for the people that bought a single fare.

Therefore I see the difference in price as insurance against something that the airliner themselves have an incentive to avoid. Additionally to the risk, as with any insurance, I also consider the cost of the worst case scenario.

Most of the time my decision is not to pay the "insurance", unless time is critical and missing the connection means more than hotel + extra flight.

gil··on The borderless SIM is finally here
Yes, the Feel At Home from Three UK feels like the future! The experience is very, very good - invisible.

Assuming you are visiting one of the 16 destinations they cover, you don't need to do anything. No signups, no opt-ins, nothing. You just go and use your phone like you would in the UK.

I also never felt that they were throttling the connection in any way, but I never really tested this.

Plus you don't even need to be on a monthly plan, any PAYG has all the same benefits.

Edit: Added reference to PAYG.

English is not my first language but I believe your "show's" should be "shows".

Sorry for being pedantic but since we are on topic I thought it would be relevant to bring it up.

gil··on 2014 regulations: F1's engine revolution
The key aspect is longevity.

While engines on road going cars have to handle hundreds of thousands of Km, F1 engines only need to last a few thousands.

Based on that fact and lower tolerances they can push several metrics that are key to the power output of the engine such as RPM a lot further than the automotive industry.

gil··on 2014 regulations: F1's engine revolution
