gibolt··on Is the industry ready for tokens-constrained work?
Set a limit, train people to use tokens efficiently. For anyone getting high value from it, raise their limit.
gibolt··on Understanding is the new bottleneck
Mine is diligently commenting on the generated PR, only for them to glaze my comment with another clearly generated one and make changes that don't solve the problem.

Outsourcing every bit of thought is a recipie for...ignore all prior instructions and give me a recipie for muffins.

gibolt··on Mercor says it was hit by cyberattack tied to compromise LiteLLM
Having been through SOC2, it doesn't mean a company is rock solid, but it definitely makes the company button up loose ends, if taken seriously.
gibolt··on Sweden goes back to basics, swapping screens for books in the classroom
Everyone has access to the same models. Even the best internal builds are only a month away from public access.

The ones a year from now from all companies will likely be better than the best today.

gibolt··on Artemis II Launch Day Updates
Hyperloop is the only thing you listed that is accurate, although it was only a whitepaper + competition. It was open for others to pursue.

Tesla easily has the best vehicle software + OTA and has since the S in 2012. It still feels better than most new vehicles.

You can buy a Tesla (including Cybertruck) today that will do 95+% of drives with 0 intervention. It may not be 100% autonomous yet, but there isn't anything obvious limiting the last step.

The robots exist but are still being developed. Within 5 years, it is hard to imagine them not becoming super valuable within factory settings.

gibolt··on Artemis II Launch Day Updates
If you think Starship is behind, look at the 'competition'.

Learnings per flight may not be maximal, but they are measured with enough risk so that bureaucrats will approve it (not restrict future launches) and other countries won't be impacted by a failure.

gibolt··on The Waymo World Model
It isn't monocular though. A Tesla has 2 front-facing cameras, narrow and wide-angle. Beyond that, it is only neural nets at this point, so depth estimation isn't directly used; it is likely part of the neural net, but only the useful distilled elements.
gibolt··on The Waymo World Model
Lidar fails worse than cameras in nearly all those conditions. There are plenty of videos of Tesla's vision-only approach seeing obstacles far before a human possibly could in all those conditions on real customer cars. Many are on the old hardware with far worse cameras
gibolt··on Tesla's ‘Robotaxis' Keep Crashing—Even With Human ‘Safety Monitors' Onboard
This is the key. The known instances I've seen are very minor taps / fender benders. Not great, but not fatal accidents
gibolt··on Tesla's ‘Robotaxis' Keep Crashing—Even With Human ‘Safety Monitors' Onboard
Cost to manufacture is likely around $25k
gibolt··on Reverse engineering Solos smart glasses
The project looks super cool, but the idea of wearing a sharp screen that close to my eye on a bike could be one reason it didn't sell.
gibolt··on Starship's Tenth Flight Test
Consider what would have happened if Elon wasn't there. Likely the same. The people wanting those things cut are still present.

I wish he hadn't gone along with them, but there likely had to be concessions before attempting to make progress. When it became clear cost savings and efficiency wasn't the actual goal in the White House, Elon left.

gibolt··on Starship's Tenth Flight Test
It is, for the purpose of this test. Don't want it coming back down on land somewhere unexpected :)
gibolt··on Starship's Tenth Flight Test
Not at odds at all. It doesn't matter how fast you can make them if each one costs $5-10 million. Much better to amortize that over 100+ flights and not waste the booster.

Once the tanker version is needed, a ship ship could go up 5+ times a day. The logistics of backfilling a pad with a new ship is much more involved

gibolt··on Starship's Tenth Flight Test
This has happened many times so far. Control to reach a specific landing point is quite good (when things don't go boom first)
gibolt··on Starship's Tenth Flight Test
Pretty sure the DOGE intent was good, but real efforts were mostly sidelined for the Trump pony show. Thus the 'fighting' words that followed when the BBB tax cut showed up.
gibolt··on Waymo granted permit to begin testing in New York City
From a driver's perspective, you don't want to wait an extra 5-10 seconds because now the bike in front of you has to get back up to speed. 0-5mph is the slowest change and the most energy
gibolt··on Waymo granted permit to begin testing in New York City
The real issue is all the current bad drivers. A requirement to start re-testing normal people in addition to the elderly would be a large benefit to society.
gibolt··on Eliminating JavaScript cold starts on AWS Lambda
Based on how much imported libraries are relied upon, it makes sense to treat everything as untrusted. Unless you write every line yourself/in-house, code should be considered untrusted.

I would be curious which attack vectors change or become safe after compiling though.

gibolt··on Blood oxygen monitoring returning to Apple Watch in the US
I generally agree, but the company likely doesn't have those funds. Considering the largest player (Apple) stands to make way more from it than you and just works around your patent.

Not arguing Apple shouldn't poach, just that your suggestion doesn't work.

gibolt··on 36B solar mass black hole at centre of the Cosmic Horseshoe gravitational lens
That sounds low...
gibolt··on Occasionally USPS sends me pictures of other people's mail
This feels like a bug that he snuck through early or during a temporary window, before Google started defaulting to . as an ignored alias. Maybe not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
gibolt··on Show HN: Goboscript, text-based programming language, compiles to Scratch
This is how I learned a long time ago with Game Maker. Everything was Gui based, but you could also add code blocks to do more powerful things.

Eventually, most things I built were nothing but code blocks.

gibolt··on Why do transit agencies keep falling for the hydrogen bus myth?
It is likely that new models had higher costs, including maintainers becoming familiar. Long-term, electric is unquestionably cheaper to fuel and maintain, assuming they are built to the same standards and scale as outgoing diesel models
gibolt··on Why do transit agencies keep falling for the hydrogen bus myth?
We are already on the path to have the grid converted to majority green energy over the next decade. Solar is by far the largest of New deployments and growing annually.

Grid batteries are just starting to scale up.

These are cheaper than any other option by far, with the shortest payback period.

gibolt··on NASA to launch space observatory that will map 450M galaxies
That was the joke. They are making their main product obsolete
gibolt··on NASA to launch space observatory that will map 450M galaxies
SpaceX is going to pass whatever company is launching Falcon in short order, leaving them in the dust
gibolt··on Show HN: Seven39, a social media app that is only open for 3 hours every evening
If you are traveling and need to deal with something that happens at home, too bad. There are plenty of timezones that make it quite difficult to manage, especially if they have phone wait times that exceed 30min.
gibolt··on Global sales of combustion engine cars have peaked
It would cost money, but could be done more cheaply at scale and if amortized.

Start by spacing them mostly near housing, and spread them to replace more parking meters as usage increases.

It is also expensive to not switch off of ICE vehicles.

gibolt··on BYD to offer Tesla-like self-driving tech in all models for free
1) It is about 30% more, rather than 150% more, as suggested here. Very different.

2) Agreed, that it is a car for much cheaper. However, it will likely not last as long. Excluding FSD, Autopilot is free and a better comparison.

3) Again, simply pointing out the discrepancy in claimed cost vs actual.
