giacomoforte··on Greenland Crisis
Americans famously don't respect native peoples and their lands.
giacomoforte··on EU and Mercosur countries sign landmark free trade deal
Beef was literally never a staple food in the EU. There's only a few regions were there is enough pasture land for a local operation but even then it was always too expensive to be a staple. Pork has always been the staple meat and we grow enough of that.
giacomoforte··on Sugar industry influenced researchers and blamed fat for CVD (2016)
?

Every health authority mentions both cholesterol/saturated fat and blood sugar as contributing factors.

giacomoforte··on Sugar industry influenced researchers and blamed fat for CVD (2016)
Pretty much every health authority will tell you that high blood sugar damages blood vessels, thereby enabling the formation of said plagues.
giacomoforte··on Sugar industry influenced researchers and blamed fat for CVD (2016)
Aren't both sugar and saturated fat problemtic, and complementary in contributing to CVD?
giacomoforte··on Repair a ship’s hull still in the river in -50˚C (2022)
I saw a youtube video of a single mother who job it was to cut out the ice from underneath the ships to create space to do the repairs. Apparently its a very dangerous job because you can easily end up frozen to the river if you're not careful. Must be the same one mentioned in the article.

giacomoforte··on US attack on Venezuela raises fears of future Greenland takeover
I love how this is a community that talks about the singularity and transhumanism and all that sci-magick-fi nonsense as if it was going to happen next year, but a real geopolitical threat the likes of which have happened countless times in the last 500 years is considered impossible...
giacomoforte··on India has surpassed Japan to become the fourth-largest economy
So racism?
giacomoforte··on India has surpassed Japan to become the fourth-largest economy
How is Japan 10000x more sophisticated?
giacomoforte··on India has surpassed Japan to become the fourth-largest economy
Nominal GDP is very important for geopolitics.
giacomoforte··on Ask HN: MIT grad, junior dev layoffs – watching my daughter lose faith in merit
The market is bad but there is still demand for top performers. It's hard to give advice without further details. Market rules apply. But MIT and olympiad background is strong enough to get interviews.
giacomoforte··on FTX insider Caroline Ellison has been moved out of prison
The interesting question is, will her career/business ventures suffer from here onwards?
giacomoforte··on FTX insider Caroline Ellison has been moved out of prison
She's hardly the average person, is she? High IQ enough to get a job at Jane Street and then constantly swimming in these elite networks at Stanford, Jane Street and whatever that weird EA thing is supposed to be.

If you do a BSc in Math in Europe and you have some olympiad creds, you have a good shot of joining Optiver or similar, and go from there.

giacomoforte··on The contrarian physics podcast subculture
As a publicly funded scientist there is nothing I find more frustrating than witnessing colleagues peddle bullshit to funding bodies and waste tax payers money, and more importantly waste opportunities for young scientists and the country to do something worthwhile with the available resources.
giacomoforte··on Show HN: Luminal – Open-source, search-based GPU compiler
Hey, I have been following your project for a while, because I'm kinda interested in progam synthesis. Anyway my question is, how scaleable is the search process itself? Is it a good fit for GPU clusters? I guess benchmarking of candidate kernels takes much longer than generating candidate kernels, or not?
giacomoforte··on Aging-related inflammation is not universal across human populations
True but saturated animal fats quickly become an issue if you don't restrict yourself to fish and lean poultry and other lean meats such as rabbit.
giacomoforte··on US embassy wants 'every social media username of past five years' for new visas
If HN counts the so does the comment section of every website that a person might ever use.
giacomoforte··on US embassy wants 'every social media username of past five years' for new visas
Scary stuff. I don't have social media, but from time to time I would create and delete Facebook/Twitter/Instagram accounts. Never posted anything. Just used them for auth/developer/Marketplace...etc. But I don't know all the logins I used in the past... So if I fail to provide a login to an empty profile, do I get permabanned from the US?
giacomoforte··on Electron band structure in germanium, my ass
I also regret studying physics, lol, although in my case I thought fiddling with algebra would be the best job ever, until I got bored of using my mind as a compiler.
giacomoforte··on Resentment
Resentment is traditionally absent when people have opportunities for social and economic mobility. I.e. give them affordable housing, good jobs and a booming economy.
giacomoforte··on The Demoralization is just Beginning
Even as somebody trying to get a US VISA, I think it is a bad idea. Whatever tests you use, there will be many millions trying to learn for the test, thereby massively taxing the immigration system and making it harder for the more genuinely skilled prospects.

BTW, merit VISAs already exist, and if you are rich there are investment VISAs. H1B is a cluster fuck, but it can be trivially fixed by allowing employees to switch employers.

giacomoforte··on The Demoralization is just Beginning
He contradicts himself. Europe, in particular Spain, France and Germany are still manufacturing goods. And yet their economies are stagnant. Because those industries have seen no growth for decades already.
giacomoforte··on Europe cannot rely on US protection, Pentagon chief tells NATO allies
What puzzles me the most about the current administration, is why are they dismantling US influence abroad? How do they profit from it?
giacomoforte··on What really happens inside a dating app
A girl who started off at the same level as you, will appreciate what you have accomplished. A girl who grew up well off won't.
giacomoforte··on What really happens inside a dating app
Find a poor girl. You are probably going for the ones with a ton of options. Get out of your bubble.
giacomoforte··on The Illustrated Guide to a PhD
If you don't pick your lab/PI wisely you might end up stroking you PI's ego without accomplishing anything of value. Or you might end doing four years of work that ends up obsolete before you even graduate.
giacomoforte··on Nvidia releases its own brand of world models
Huh? Their position in the market is much better than that of OpenAI and Co. Selling hardware and services is sure business. Training models is by contrast a risky business, and even if you attain SOTA, you cannot relax because your competitors will be on your tail. From a purely pragmatic perspective they also do not have the manpower to compete seriously in that space.
giacomoforte··on Nvidia's Project Digits is a 'personal AI supercomputer'
It costs the equivalent of 2 years of cloud GPU H100s at current prices.

Edit: Sorry fucked up my math. I wanted to do 40x52x4, $4/hr being the cloud compute price but that us actually $8300, so it is actually equivalent to about 4.5 months of cloud compute. 40 hours because I presume that this will only be used for prototyping and debugging, i.e during office hours.
