Resentment is traditionally absent when people have opportunities for social and economic mobility. I.e. give them affordable housing, good jobs and a booming economy.
Doesn't help that we are constantly bombarded by media showing us how good people have it compared to others. The price of showing the nation your best and brightest and most fortunate is resentment.
I have a better solution: Just ignore it. Society doesn't have to listen to everyone. Democracy doesn't mean "treat every opinion as equally valid no matter how idiotic". You don't have to press the "destroy the world" button when 51% of people vote to do so, because some charismatic personalities said it was a cool idea.
Tax the rich? Have we tried that, yet?
It would take taxing the entire top 20% to make any headway and once people on HN figure that out, they'll tar and feather anyone who says "tax the rich" within earshot. It's probably necessary but it's never going to fly.
Why on earth would we try a silly thing like that?
No, clearly we need to tax the poor even harder, so they can afford fewer calories and not be able to work themselves up so much.
