ghughes··on Ask HN: I don't want to be a founder anymore
If you have to replace words to interpret the statement correctly, then there is a problem with the statement, not the reader.
ghughes··on Opera’s founder calls for a ban on tracking on Facebook and Google
You hate to say it, yet you were able to ignore the substance of the article and say it anyway.
ghughes··on Ksonnet: Simplify working with Kubernetes configurations
This links to a blog post that is mostly marketing fluff and quotes from fawning CTOs. Useful documentation and examples are here: http://ksonnet.heptio.com
ghughes··on An internal Google email shows how the company cracks down on leaks
Reporter decries company for prohibiting its employees from discussing company business with reporters.
ghughes··on Ask HN: What is the most common security mistake you see?
This advice doesn't seem to be getting through regardless of how loudly it is proclaimed. Everyone should have a backup plan with multiple points of failure, but of course lots of people don't because it's not trivial to set that up.

I don't think current operating systems go anywhere near far enough in helping users to get this right. When I buy a computer, the computer should be in charge of ensuring that catastrophic data loss cannot easily occur. 9 times out of 10, the user simply doesn't know how to set things up that way.

ghughes··on How Anker is beating Apple and Samsung at their own accessory game
Don't hate the player, hate the game. Amazon is to blame for this state of affairs.
ghughes··on Get your loved ones off Facebook
> The best doesn't win, the easiest does.

Exactly. Diaspora and its ilk miss this point entirely. If users have to set up their own infrastructure or even think about how it works then it's never going to scale.

ghughes··on Kill Google AMP before it kills the web
Are you going to fix this? https://amphtml.files.wordpress.com/2017/02/image1.png
ghughes··on Google in, Google out
The maximum penalty for violating the GDPR is 4% of worldwide turnover. Possibly stupid question: I keep hearing that this is considered a "high" penalty, but if you're Google or Facebook and this (or any) regulation substantially threatens your bottom line to the tune of more than 4%, wouldn't you just eat it like a tax?
ghughes··on Kill Google AMP before it kills the web
It turns out that if you strip most of the JS bloat from a webpage and serve it from a fast CDN, the page loads way faster. Shocking stuff.
ghughes··on BBC Says It May Contact Your Boss If You Post Comments It Finds Problematic
It's got nothing to do with the law. They're notifying third parties about people who they suspect of posting "offensive" content.
ghughes··on Netflix confirms it is blocking rooted/unlocked Android devices
Above and beyond? This is a simple yet effective countermeasure that the content providers have likely insisted upon.
ghughes··on Macron condemns 'massive' hacking attack
This will not stop until we get secure communication and collaboration tools into the hands of election campaign operatives.
ghughes··on FBI director Comey backs new Feinstein push for decrypt bill
I wrote a similar letter: https://medium.com/@flukes1/my-letter-to-amber-rudd-on-encry...
ghughes··on Facebook ads in the UK General Election 2017
They already gave the data to Facebook, so I think that ship has sailed.
ghughes··on Open Sourcing our new Duckling – Probabilistic Parser Rewritten in Haskell
> Duckling is now used at scale internally by Facebook.

I'm thrilled to hear that Facebook has a new toy for extracting structured data from vast quantities of text.

ghughes··on Fears Google Hire could allow employers to see your entire search history
Whose fears, exactly? This is tabloid nonsense.
ghughes··on U.S. has withdrawn its request to identify a Trump critic
Any government employees who played a part in this outrageous attempted abuse of power should be removed from their position(s) of authority.
ghughes··on Post-FCC Privacy Rules, Should You VPN?
It'd be neat if there were an app for one-click deployment of OpenVPN using one's own AWS or Azure account. That would be much safer than picking from a list of shady VPN providers.
ghughes··on Voice Calls: Secure, Crystal-Clear, AI-Powered
It's gimmicky. I prefer Signal's numeric encoding - easy to read aloud with no room for ambiguity.
ghughes··on UK Home Secretary says encryption on messaging services is unacceptable
I wrote a letter to Amber Rudd based in part on your comment: https://medium.com/@flukes1/my-letter-to-amber-rudd-on-encry...
ghughes··on Update on HTML5 Video for Netflix
Nope, there's a company in Shenzhen that makes a plug-and-play bypass device: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2016/01/warner-bros-sues...
ghughes··on The Uber Bombshell About to Drop
Turns out it was important business information after all.
ghughes··on The Uber Bombshell About to Drop
According to Bloomberg, veteran Waymo employees were paid "F-you money". https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-02-13/one-reaso...
ghughes··on We will no longer use the phrase “zero knowledge” to describe our software
Probably because it's difficult to explain E2E to users in an easily-digestible way, and most users don't know the cryptographic definition of zero knowledge. I'm not excusing their use of the term, but I can see why they think new terminology is needed.
ghughes··on We will no longer use the phrase “zero knowledge” to describe our software
If the service doesn't enforce end-to-end encryption of customer data, then it's a misleading statement.
ghughes··on CIA malware and hacking tools
What would be the point of the CIA sponsoring jailbreak teams? The exploits they find are generally burned very quickly.
ghughes··on North Korea’s Missile Launches Were Failing Too Often
NYT's original scoop hints that the missiles or the systems controlling them were compromised by malware similar to Stuxnet, which worked by tampering with parameters used to control industrial hardware. That kind of attack could work regardless of the accuracy of NK's guidance systems.
ghughes··on Cloudflare data still in Bing caches
Does CF redirect all non-HTTP traffic to HTTPS? If not, NSA could have passively intercepted tons of leaked data, and all it would take is for one of their analysts - people paid to find stuff like this - to notice a single out-of-place leaked secret and trace it back to CF.
ghughes··on Alphabet's Waymo Alleges Uber Stole Self-Driving Secrets
This smells like FUD.

> They could have simply moved things on the desk.

Is there any evidence suggesting something else happened?
