19 of 20 startups "fail." Meaning they don't exit for huge valuations. Go look at many of the "successes" and the founders had a deep safety net. Meaning they could afford it. Access to affordable capital and luck. Seriously. Don't be down on yourself. Did you learn? Probably. Did you make deep friendships along the way? Probably. Those count too. Don't let hyper-capitalism define "success" for you.

Before designing something new, you might consider going to look at the AWS CDK - https://aws.amazon.com/cdk/ - which is exactly what you are describing.

I was a Reactor Operator (RO) on SSN-687, the last boat before the LA class. Back when dinosaurs still lived and all. Our EOs were super smart too, but the ROs had an astounding amount of ability to troubleshoot and fix things. In those days you had to be able to repair at the component level - underway. But our MMs were amazing including being able to weld while hanging upside down in a bilge - Dave Blackshear I'm talking about you. Since then I've done startups, co-founded startups, done development and management, including VP Eng at both startups and large companies. I've never found the camaraderie and level of trust I had on the boat. It's come close a few times. Submariners are a special breed, and most of the joking stereotyping in the article are true (enough). Flat out, if you earned your dolphins (qualified in submarines) then you are my brother or sister.

To heck with the recruiter. As a hiring manager I look for passion for coding and learning - and that your profile isn't brand new. If it has periods of no contribution I don't care - people get busy, have lives, etc. I don't hold the lack of a profile against someone, but an active profile that shows someone playing, learning, testing, and especially contributing is someone that jumps to the top of my list. A passion for doing and learning is something that cannot be taught. Faked maybe. But that shows up pretty quick too.

That's lame, sorry. As a long-time hiring manager I do value a good readme if the project is meant for others to consume, otherwise if it's a scratch pad for learning who cares? And I could care less about how pretty their code is. I'm more interested to see if they are PASSIONATE about tech. While it's true that some folks don't have time outside of work my experience is that really good Engineers still play around a bit. They fork stuff. They try it. They may submit a PR that fixes something. They have some experimental repos where they put stuff when learning a new language. And yes, the rare one will have a fork of a project where they regularly contribute. I don't think you are looking for the things I look for in a candidate at all.

Two years old. Could have been titled "I reject the goals of golang" - many of the things he hates were actual design objectives of the language. Some are so minor it's silly. Bottom line is if you don't like it then don't code in it.

Have you considered that maybe him telling you that you were wrong was a ruse to see how you handled disagreements? I use this technique sometimes myself.

I wrote my first code on a TRS-80 model 1 with level one basic and a cassette drive. Our high school math teacher got us permission to use the local University mainframe to learn fortran. That was in 9th grade in 1978. I was 14.

I would buy Office for Linux. Hands down. Full price. Don't lock me into a crappy OS to get your products I do like.

Also, take serious advantage of Apple v Google and do some real innovation in the OS area. Make me love Windows 8 more than Linux. You have an opportunity.

Finally, make a next generation platform for mobile that's more than a lame copy of your crappy OS for the desktop. Inject some real competition into the handset market.

I am not a laywer, so this is not legal advice. It's just an informed opinion. The short answer is maybe, but probably not. Applications are not worth much. How far along is the app? You can get some public information. Go to http://www.uspto.gov/ebc/index.html and scroll down to Public PAIR. Enter the application number. Look at the history. If the examiner has had a lot of actions then that's a sign that the claim set is being reduced (maybe). Remember, it does not matter what is discussed in the abstract it's all about the claims. If you can find a way to worm around the claims then you are not infringing. But, remember that if issued the patent holder can sue you and make you defend yourself. Can you afford that? On the other hand, who owns the patent (app)? Can they afford to sue you?

As an alternate option, if you can find some prior art there are several ways to bring that to the examiners attention (for a few thousand dollars in fees) and maybe you can torpedo their application before it's even issued.

What I recommend you do if you are serious is to speak to an attorney. Now that you posted this you might have trouble claiming you never knew about it... and knowingly infringing a patent brings treble damages.

Event-driven. There's a lot of motion that way - Enterprise (usually across a SOA) as well as application space - look at how D-Bus is used in linux apps. The trend towards real-time data flows (think twitter) will speed this trend up I think. OO might still apply in an implementation, but as an architecture I think it's not always as good as thinking in terms of events.
