ggirelli··on We’re forgetting what darkness feels like
Recently had a guest for a few days and they were surprised by how few dim lights I would have on at any time, and turn off immediately as soon as I did not need them, walking around in the dark at night. Always thought it was normal keeping the house dim/dark when its dark outside but apparently it's not.
ggirelli··on Fastpotify
I've been using it sporadically over the past 10+ years and have not noticed any major changes, at least for my limited use.
ggirelli··on Back to Kagi
Any thoughts on Uruky? Just found it by searching for a Europe-based Kagi alternative. https://uruky.com
ggirelli··on EU now one step away from reviving private message scanning rules
Do you have any references to the Spain thing?
ggirelli··on EU now one step away from reviving private message scanning rules
Had expired in April. This is a tentative of bringing it back up even though it expired after a number of previous extensions.

Not "access to ALL of your data". Also, as confusing as it might be, it is in the nature of EU (at least IMHO) to not have a clear position over multiple legislatures.

At a quick glance, they all seem to have published their source code and they do run locally.
ggirelli··on It's not about physical vs. digital games, it's about ownership
For most games sold on physical media I was under the strong impression that selling/trading the physical media would automatically transfer the license, as the licensee was the owner of the physical media.

Basically one would by a CD-ROM containing a licensed copy of a game, and would then be the owner of the CD-ROM but only a licensee for the game. Selling/trading the CD-ROM would transfer the licensee status to the new CD-ROM owner.

ggirelli··on Steam Hardware: Launch timing and other FAQs
I guess it would work like the PSVR2 solution, just not implemented at game rendering level but at system streaming level.

ggirelli··on If You Quit Social Media, Will You Read More Books?
I did it and yes! I've been reading more books, exploring the indies/smallweb, and spending more time with friends IRL. I highly recommend it! And I agree that the mainstream internet and social media are possibly driving a shortening if it attention span, but books are a perfect example of how to counteract this. After I quit/drastically reduced social media exposure and started reading books again, I initially found it tough. Slowly though I adjusted to the old media.

ggirelli··on Patterns for Defensive Programming in Rust
Loved the article, such a nice read. I am still slowly ramping up my proficiency in Rust and this gave me a lot of things to think through. I particularly enjoyed the temporary mutability pattern, very cool and didn't think about it before!

ggirelli··on Personal blogs are back, should niche blogs be next?
Out of curiosity, I see my website not being well indexed and I wondered whether it is because I include ``` User-agent: * Disallow: / ``` in my robots.txt. What should one add to allow Marginalia to crawl their website?

ggirelli··on I hate screenshots of text
Why spend electricity and time to read the text in a screenshot, and then more time making sure there are no mistakes. When the sender could have just copied the original text?

ggirelli··on I’ve removed Disqus. It was making my blog worse
I tried we mentions for a while, but then switched to just POSSE (publish (on your) own site, syndicate elsewhere). So the comments are moved to other platforms atm.
ggirelli··on Thinking in Space
How does the space you are in, the environment, affect the way you think? Do you "think differently", or does your mind behave differently, when you are in a small restricted space, compared to a large and vast opening?
ggirelli··on The future is not self-hosted
To me, the major issue of self-hosting (once overcome the tech barrier etc...) has always been protection. Not from external actors or attacks, but from incidents. By which I mean backups. Safest option is online backup, which is expensive and takes your data sovereignty away once again. Or I can once a year make a hard copy and take it to my parents (who live in a different country) for storage, and swap the backups out. Either way, very suboptimal. If anyone has a good way to achieve this, please lmk

ggirelli··on Would you use an LLM that follows instructions reliably?
> Have you experienced this kind of problem? In what tasks does it show up most for you? I have experienced this type of problem. A colleague asked an LLM to convert a list of items in a text to a table. The model managed to skip 3 out of 7 items from the list somehow.

> Would solving it be valuable enough to pay for? Do you see this as something LLM providers will solve themselves soon, or is there room for an external solution?

The solution I have found so far is to prompt the model to write and execute code to make responses more reproducible. In that way most of the variability ends up in the code, but the code outputs tend to be more consistent, at least in my experience.

That said, I do feel like current providers will start to or are already working on this.
