gghootch··on Learn to Code in 3 Months—or Less
I am always surprised when reading posts like this one. Studying a subject is boring, one learns fastest through real world practice/experience.

Whenever someone asks me how to pick up programming I give them the following advice.

1. Think of something cool you want to build. Scratch your own itch. Presume everything is possible.

2. Find out what reading material is required by your local universities for an introductory software engineering class. Find one that has a 200-300 page reader, written by the professor that teaches the course. Go to the university, buy reader. It's cheap, max 20$, and extremely dense. Do all exercises.

3. Find a cool web framework. Program.

Before you realize it, you'll have developed something pretty cool.

To my surprise, this worked perfectly on my iPhone...
gghootch··on The iPad’s split keyboard has 6 invisible keys
Does 'in touch' refer to on devices as the iPhone or iTouch or with regular old keyboards?

I hit the B with my left hand on a normal keyboard; fairly certain that's the way all professional typing courses teach teach you to do it.

gghootch··on Sony forecasts record annual loss of $6.4bn
How many people in your immediate vicinity do you know who still have a Sony product aside from a Playstation?

I could think of only one and he's got IEMs they do not make anymore...

Are there any popular Sony electronics left out there?

gghootch··on A hacker creates his own version of Google Project Glass
I wonder if the real-time video was recorded with the AR glasses themselves and if so if there's similar stutter in what Will Powell sees.

In any case, pretty cool 'prototype'!

gghootch··on Throw Out Everything You Know About Ads
I wonder if the inspiration for this test was directly taken from Max Teitelbaum's interview @ mixergy?

Search for 'paint' and you'll find the relevant passage.

"Andrew: Give me an example. I’d love to.
When we started media buying, we saw stock raising.
We saw what all the brands were doing. We needed
something really flashy, something really clean.
When I made something in Paint, as a joke and sent it over
to the guys, we just threw it up as a test, and it
quadrupled the conversion rate of anything else.
After that, I think we made every banner in Paint."

gghootch··on Ask HN: What did you build in March?

I love this. Finally a place to spend the art gift card my parents gave me.

What other leading candidates can you think of?
gghootch··on Paul Graham PyCon 2012 keynote
When talking about the Apple killer pg states two things.

1. The next product visionary will have a great example in Jobs and Apple. 2. The next Apple probably won't start with a consumer product, but they might be able to make some consumer thingy like Jawbone does.

Nest creates a great consumer thingy that's relatively cheap and it's run by an ex Apple employee. Tony Fadell might say he's not pursuing Apple's business, but is it unreasonable to think he might when the Apple pirate ship starts sinking?

gghootch··on Google’s Web Search Quality. A picture is worth a 1000 words
Adding some very popular words to a query really messes up the results of all three.

I tried combinations of the movie with (four) guys in white clothing/suits. It wasn't until I searched for 'the movie with guys dressed in white' that any relevant results were returned.

http://duckduckgo.com/?q=the+movie+with+guys+dressed+in+whit...

Arguably it's Google > Duck > Bing

Also, according to that item only the English wikipedia will go down. Votebait?
gghootch··on A 14-year-old could build 1998's Google using her Dad's credit card
I'm not sure whether this is applicable but my main objection with this article is that the numbers don't add up. How many Ph.D. candidates do you know who are granted a budget of $10k+ to do their research? Surely something else must have been going on to shrink the expenses to a more acceptable amount.

Then again, according to the wikipedia page the original BackRub was conceived when the web was only 10 million pages large, $2000 is considerably more acceptable for a Ph.D. project.

gghootch··on What Jobs Do the Top 1% Have?
Absolutely speaking managers rank higher, but that's a trivial figure considering there are significantly more managers out there than CEOs.

Relatively CEOs are better off than managers.

gghootch··on What is a startup?
Let me start-off by saying that my notes on this are basically thought-up on a whim and should probably be considered as light remarks. My knowledge on what is and what isn't a startup is limited.

Notes on your definition:

You could exclude apple as an outlier by changing "in the next few years" to "in the first few years".

Concerning the significance of growing by a large factor; you might want to consider changing the absolute number to a recurring value. 500 users in the first year which turn into 5000 after five years is hardly significant. 500*5^5 = 1.562.500 is starting to feel significant. The actual growth factor per year might need to be altered.

"repeatedly grow by a large factor (5x or more)"

Ambitions and plans could be refactored to "aims"; if you're aiming to do something you probably have the ambition and you sure as hell need to have some plans or your ambitions won't go anywhere. Although it might be better to explicitly mention ambitions and plans.

In conclusion, my refactored definition would be

"A startup is a business which aims to repeatedly grow by a large factor (5x or more) in the first few (1-5) years.

gghootch··on Google's 404 Page
Google uses some clever trick to hide the closing tags in your browser. Download the file and open it in your editor of choice, the closing tags are there.

EDIT: Or chrome is auto-adding the tags? As mentioned below curl doesn't replicate the same results, nor does Firefox.

gghootch··on Ask HN: Looking for a project management/collaboration service

gghootch··on Ask HN: Looking for a project management/collaboration service
Thanks for the response, unfortunately I am familiar with everything 37signals.

I'm looking for this specific service because I liked their 'everything available in one screen' approach.

gghootch··on Khan Academy Triples Unique Users To 3.5 Million
1. I wonder what their international user base looks like. (Not counting native English speaking countries like UK & India)

Two weeks ago my mom cut out a lengthy article for me, as she often does when she thinks she's read something relevant to my interests. To my surprise it was on Khan Academy, something I already read about past summer in Wired.

2. Does anyone know whether KA has received any more international press coverage lately?

gghootch··on Go Ahead, Sell My Data
"they don't feel they have the willpower to resist these hyper-personalized ads"

Although it's not necessarily a discussion of their own willpower but rather whether the masses will lose portions of the power to think for themselves. Not always the same or hyperspecific portions, but we're slowly giving away more and more of our decisions to advertisements.

/Disclaimer: not sure whether I paraphrased this correctly./

gghootch··on Go Ahead, Sell My Data
A lot of my peers would say this is just one line of code away from a society in which our every single action or movement is influenced by hyper personalized advertisements. They fear losing control of their own lives.

I say bring it on. I look forward to the day when an algorithm tells me my taste buds prefer extra spicy beef panda express, order now and have it air delivered to you in ten minutes
