gfkclzhzo··on Intel delays $28B Ohio chip fabs to 2030
This might be a response to the functional repeal of the CHIPS act.

https://www.techspot.com/news/106925-chips-act-likely-fizzle...

Congressional appropriations don't matter when the president can fire staff and stop payments.

gfkclzhzo··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
The USA used to fight proxy vs proxy against Russia. Now we have a chance for us to fight through a proxy against Russia itself. This is a huge geopolitical opportunity to diminish or even destroy an enemy with low risk to the US itself.

The whole liberal-democratic world should be all-in on Ukraine assistance.

Instead, Trump just made it clear that the optimal time for PRC v ROC round 2 is within the next 3 year 10 months.

gfkclzhzo··on Elon Musk fans believe he can make Dogecoin the currency of Earth
Curious - what's your crypto exposure?

I'm starting to diversify into it as a hedge against the collapse of the US dollar. Definitely not all-in though.

I'm anti-fasicist today, but I wonder if I'd be a Muskovite had TradeHill not kept 'my' bitcoins when it closed in the early 2010s.

gfkclzhzo··on Elon Musk fans believe he can make Dogecoin the currency of Earth
Is Dogecoin really a 'memecoin'? Is Musk involved in any way?

My understanding is that it's from the original doge meme wave and was responsible for the dogeification of Musk.

It seems like a FOSS community project that started as a meme and snowballed into a 2nd tier coin. It doesnt smell very musky to me.

gfkclzhzo··on Introducing a terms of use and updated privacy notice for Firefox
Lately I've been working on strategies to use software in unusual enough ways that I'm essentially off the radar of, well, anyone looking. The dark forest approach to the internet.

To avoid interacting with the web directly, I'm thinking of running some AI software in a container on a home server that would be a translation layer between me and the real web. All webpages would be converted to a simple, and secure, format. Gopher, gemini, asciidoc, or maybe just static html.

Is that a tractable problem with modern AI tools?

The only way to win is not to play, but I'd like to have my cake and eat it too.

gfkclzhzo··on Introducing a terms of use and updated privacy notice for Firefox
Icecat is the GNU build of the open-source base of Firefox. I think that's the best bet until Ladybird is ready for daily diving.

Fennec on Android.

gfkclzhzo··on Dystopias, authoritarianism, technological threats Is progress over?
They're making a rational judgement based on factual information about current events.

The authoritarian coup currently happening in the US is real. Do not let your conditioning cause you to view it a conspiracy theory.

gfkclzhzo··on Musk gives federal workers "another chance" to justify their jobs
Probably because all the competent employees reported the first email as phishing. The only box it didn't check was asking the employee to buy and Amazon gift card.
gfkclzhzo··on DOGE will use AI to assess the responses of federal workers
I wonder how many federal workers created their emails with AI, and whether that will be good or bad for them.

Trump and Musk may be 'leaders', but they are not good managers. Putting employees into fight or flight mode does not optimize for productive outcomes.

gfkclzhzo··on Ultima VII: Revisited
This is remarkable. I tried to replay U7 over the pandemic and it was just too clunky, even with Exult. This looks like it addresses my issues while perserving the original aesthetic.

AI voice acting on-the-fly from in-game text would be slick.

Tangent - Do any games let you set a speed multiplier for in-game speech? I'd love to run dialog at 1.5x like I do for podcasts.

gfkclzhzo··on The Quest to Make the Perfect Toothbrush
How about making one that doesn't shed little bits of nylon into your mouth.

It's surprisingly hard to find a toothbrush with natural bristles, but there are some boarshair options. Most of the hippy-dippy toothbrushes use nylon made from corn.

gfkclzhzo··on Ask HN: What could Trump / Musk gain from inspecting Fort Knox?
Someday doge may put you in the crosshairs.

I won't lose anything if they rifle through your drawers, so I'm happy to find out if you have anything to hide.

gfkclzhzo··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
Why would he pick the safest form of travel to try to improve safety?

The FAA and NTSB have a pretty great track record.

Maybe he's talking about sending SpaceX engineers to Boeing. I don't know whether he's wearing his US gov hat or his private business hat when he wrote that tweet.

gfkclzhzo··on Federal workers launch a new site to share inside information about DOGE
It's literally difficult for me to conceptualize the current situation in the federal government. My knee-jerk 'that sounds crazy so I'll reject it out of hand' circuit is so strong that it's hard to override it with rational thought.

It'd be like seeing Santa come out of my fireplace on Christmas eve. Rationally, I think I'd have to start believing in Santa, but I don't think my brain would let me.

gfkclzhzo··on Minimal Company E-Ink Phone with QWERTY Keyboard
You're asking a lot from a start-up company launching their first product. 5 years is plenty of time for this to become supported by LineageOS/etc.
gfkclzhzo··on DigiKey's Tariff Resources

gfkclzhzo··on Federal workers launch a new site to share inside information about DOGE
Am I being overly paranoid to wonder if this is a honeypot?

'Disloyalty' today may land you in a gulag tomorrow.

gfkclzhzo··on I found a backdoor into my bed
I have a chilipad - https://sleep.me/

It's good for temperature control, you can set a profile that changes over night. The cooling is a complete fix for night sweats. It heats too, but I don't use it. I don't use the sleep tracking features.

My only semi-major complaint is that the pump is kind of loud. Only annoyance is that you need to have it connected to wifi w/ internet to set the temperature profile w/ the app, but it keeps working afterwards w/o internet.

gfkclzhzo··on China Looks to Use Tesla FSD Rollout as Leverage in Trade Negotiations

gfkclzhzo··on UnitedHealth laying off 30-35k employees by May 1
Meanwhile, in bizarro world - The federal government starts a single payer healthcare system, creating a giant new agency and tons of federal jobs. UnitedHealth and related companies are doged, with the bulk of the fired employees taking jobs our new NHS. Efficiency gains result in a 1% reduction in federal healthcare spending, and all of it is put into a 10000000% increase of the NOAA budget with a mandate to solve global warming.
gfkclzhzo··on Bosch's brake-by-wire system may be the next big leap in automotive tech
The same is true of purely mechanical designs.

Isolated embedded systems can be like mechanical systems in that they're simple enough to be tractable and even deterministic.

A system running Linux and calling AWS lamda functions through the cell network isn't tractable.

gfkclzhzo··on Ray-Ban Meta glasses have sold 2M units, production to be increased

gfkclzhzo··on America's gold reserves could add $750B to the U.S. Treasury
Convicting Elon Musk of treason and seizing his assets could add $400B to the treasury
gfkclzhzo··on [dead]
Trump is the one that will be thrown under the bus.

Vance will be America's last president.

Musk will be supreme leader of America's successor state and off-world colonies.
