gettodachoppa··on Indians Are Entering the U.S. Illegally in Record Numbers
RICH people who control both parties want lower wages for Americans. And Democrats will never allow border protection because the illegal immigrants they gleefully import become Democrat voters.

If any working/middle class people complain, the people who control the culture and media will ensure they get smeared as racists.

gettodachoppa··on Microsoft: Require user consent before sending any telemetry
The requested deadline is likely done ahead of filing a complaint in Europe, to show they gave ample warning.

Also remember he's not talking to a human, but to a soulless corporation. He was as cordial as could be given the circumstances.

And finally, remember that it doesn't matter if a product Microsoft develops to increase their control over developers (via vendor lock-in, mindshare, and forced telemetry) happens to result in a decent free text editor for the user. No one owes them gratitude. This isn't charity.

P.S. Did you know VSCode lets extensions not respect the user's "no telemetry" choice? It's been an open ticket for like 4 years now, that MS have no intention to ever fix, even though all it would take is a simple VSCode Extension Store EULA change.

A quick Google search shows they're run by "Arn Pearson, Executive Director of the Center for Media and Democracy, publisher of SourceWatch, PRWatch, and BanksterUSA".

If you google Arn Pearson (https://muckrack.com/arn-pearson/articles) , he exclusively, and without fail, writes nothing but anti-Republican hit pieces or about how much of a threat the right-wing is. He doesn't seem to have ever found something bad done by a Democrat that might be worth criticizing.

So this seems to be a typical Democrat non-profit where NY trust-fund nepobabies get to hang out for high salaries and lattes and the bi-weekly Republican hit piece, probably funded by similar billionaires as the Republican donations they decry.

gettodachoppa··on Why is Debian the way it is?
I don't think I want Debian changing their packaging policies so some random Retroarch contributor can break my app (or worse, losing my data) by pushing a bad update. I want Debian to be a rock-solid OS where nothing breaks even if it means old software versions, because adults are doing QC.

If I need a specific app to always be up to date, I can get it from external sources on a case-by-case basis, such as downloading an AppImage/Flatpack from the developer's website or using Docker.

Why wouldn't you want a rolling distro if you want everything updated all the time?

gettodachoppa··on Show HN: OpenStatus – Open-source monitoring with incident managements
As a power user (not professional sysadmin) I love Uptime Kuma. A simple docker image that uses 110MB RAM and gave me all the monitoring I need for my home lab and my cloud VPS. Very easy to use too, lovely UI.

gettodachoppa··on AI is fundamentally ‘a surveillance technology’
Should it be regulated? If businesses want known shoplifters flagged by their AI camera so they can refuse service, shouldn't they have a right to do it?

I know in America this would be painted as an attack on the Holy Minority and therefore no one will be allowed to discuss it without being branded a blasphemer, so I'm curious what people on here think.

I feel like businesses should have this right, but I worry about slippery slopes. It might start with shoplifters, and 20 years later when 99% of stores are owned by the same 3 megacorps, people could get banned for wrongthink and for shaping the political views of the masses at large. Kinda like what they do now on social media.

gettodachoppa··on Reasons Windows Is Going in the Wrong Direction
Because I hate in politics when people repeat a lie enough and it becomes the new reality that everyone will eventually accept, and I don't like seeing this sort of thing infect tech. I see this Red Hat narrative being adopted in real-time on tech forums and IRC.

What Red Hat is doing doesn't damage open-source. Open-source is meant to guarantee the end-user (ideally a normal person, not a tech giant, at least for me that's the only person I care about) has the freedom to use/modify the software they paid for. Everyone can still do that.

What's gone is the abuse of the GPL for systematic, automated cloning by parasites like Oracle or Cloud Linux Foundation, simply for the purpose of using RHEL without paying for it.

If you need RHEL on your systems, use one of the 16 free RHEL licenses they give you. If your app runs in a Docker container, the RHEL images require no license to use. If this isn't enough, switch distros (I hear CentOS Stream is pretty close) or pay for RHEL.

I simply don't see legitimate users being affected by this.

gettodachoppa··on Reasons Windows Is Going in the Wrong Direction
Red Hat did no such thing, they are completely in compliance with GPL. Customers who pay for RHEL get the source code just like the GPL intended. It's within their right to stop selling you future RHEL licenses for re-distributing this and it's not even remotely morally wrong. No normal person was affected by this, just freeloaders like Oracle and other downstream people who wanted RHEL without paying for it and set up a whole automated system to keep an identical clone.

Just because you're annoyed they put some roadblocks for freeloaders, doesn't mean you get to distort facts.

gettodachoppa··on Reasons Windows Is Going in the Wrong Direction
What do you mean by updated scheduler? Task Scheduler? It looks the same as it did in the older Windows to me.

I love WSL but what does it do that cygwin didn't? I guess let you use the distro directly including package manager. But a VM can do that. And WSL2 is just Hyper-V virtualization, that's all it is.

So it's nothing really new here, if you want this on Windows 7, then just install Virtualbox/Hyper-V/whatever, create a Ubuntu VM (with shared folders), configure it to launch at Windows startup, and create a launcher shortcut to SSH into it.

So a hippie boomer held some hippie boomer belief, then after speaking to people affected by it, he realized he was wrong and changed his mind. And this is a problem because?

I'm more likely to donate to the FSF than to any of those bland, soulless American "we hecking love corpo-FOSS" HR drones like the OSI and the other vultures who tried to take him out a couple of years back. If Stallman is replaced by a fake corpo-drone, I'd never donate, just as I stopped for Mozilla.

gettodachoppa··on Trunk-based development vs. long-lived feature branches
Why would you want to review individual commits when the same lines can change from one commit to another? It seems like more work. Personally I want to see the final list of changes when I review, and not waste my time with intermediate stuff.

I know some people are diligent about using rebase to present a clean commit history, but that's rare in practice in my experience. And it's incompatible with devs who aren't skilled at git.

> Bug reports or questions generally do not require mentioning your race, ethnicity, nationality or identity preferences.

There are people whose reply to that statement would be "Help! I'm being oppressed!" . The sort of people who say being race-neutral is white supremacy.

There's a lot of bored people who just want to feel like social activists because they've been taught it's noble (no matter how cringe it is to normal people). And there's no lower-effort way of doing this than causing drama in tech communities where no one cares about your race or gender. It's a perfect place to turn into a battleground, and then if they reject you, you run to social media to virtue signal about toxicity.

I like the idea of ostree but having glanced at it, as a casual/intermediate user, it didn't seem as user-friendly as, say, Docker was (which a home user can learn in an afternoon). It wasn't obvious how to get to "Debian distro deployed as an ostree snapshot".

Is this one of those things designed for career sysadmins/system builders only?

Last I looked at Distrobox, DNS didn't work on Ubuntu LTS or Debian Bookworm. It was literally useless.

How can anyone adopt an unpolished hobby project that only seems to be tested on the dev's Arch box is beyond me.

>There's hardly any other API with that kind of backwards compatibility.

Qt? 99.99% of the API from Qt 4 (2005) is identical in Qt 6 (ongoing). A few headers were renamed, and a few minor functions, generally stuff you can port in 1 day.

When they released Qt 5 and 6 and decided to switch from Qt Widgets to a new GUI toolkit (QML), they didn't say "umm, just rewrite your whole codebase in QML bro", they kept widgets around in perpetual maintenance mode. This is how you respect your users.

gettodachoppa··on Caddy is the first and only web server to use HTTPS automatically and by default
Does nginx's configuration complexity mean anything in the age of ChatGPT?

I set up a whole reverse proxy stack on my personal webserver (thanks to the swag docker image: nginx + auto-renewing let's encrypt + fail2ban). I hadn't really done any web stuff before, certainly nothing on the public Internet.

I didn't have time to read the nginx doc so I had ChatGPT do most of it. I'd then ask for changes depending on the challenges of a specific webapp (for example, not requiring basic_auth on certain routes that were using the tool's own auth).

I realize this is a simple example, but if I was able to achieve all my goals quickly with zero prior experience, surely it can't be that hard for someone who does this stuff for a living.

gettodachoppa··on U.S. v. Google
Mozilla could easily live without Google's money if the vast majority of their income wasn't spent on being Big Nonprofit ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37180480 )

I would love it if they lost Google's money and trimmed the bile and focused on making great tech. But something tells me the first to be let go will be the techies, making Firefox effectively a maintenance-only browser. And the army of useless "evangelists" will be there until Mozilla collapses under its own weight.

gettodachoppa··on Meta deletes Al Jazeera presenter’s profile after show criticising Israel
Peaceful end-time for good people, eternal damnation for bad people, yes. How many Christians do you think consider a good person of another religion to be going to hell? Jesus' main teachings were compassion and loving your neighbor.

When I read Wikipedia's page on the Second Coming, at no point does it mention Jesus waging war. So much for being "mainstream theology"...

gettodachoppa··on Meta deletes Al Jazeera presenter’s profile after show criticising Israel
You must think you're deboonking by linking random Bible verses and obscure theory most people have never heard of?

I'm agnostic but I was raised Christian in different communities and on different continents and I have never been taught that Jesus's return is anything but a peaceful end-time where the just go to heaven (and yes, the wicked to hell). Zero mentions of Jesus waging war, if anything it's taught as the end of war and strife.

Not a single person I know associates Jesus with doing violence. I'm sure someone must believe this, but calling it "mainstream" is bad faith. What sort of "mainstream" theology is it if neither me nor anyone I know has been taught this?

gettodachoppa··on A successful Git branching model (2010)
I go out of my way to change the default tech companies try to push on you, back to 'master'. I was migrating a team at work from SVN to git and the project lead was telling me the trunk branch should be called 'main' because that's the standard. I explained this is American nonsense and git has always used master, but because the Google algorithm wouldn't find any evidence except articles from the looney American left, I ended up having to show him on the CLI (which of course he never used before) in a bare new project to prove it.

Thankfully our hatred of American cultural imperialism united us and he agreed on using master. Three cheers for Ramirez!

gettodachoppa··on A successful Git branching model (2010)
Out of curiosity...you mention fixing multiple releases at once (release/23.08 and release/23.09).

in your example, are you keeping those older release branches around forever in git, or deleting them as soon as the release is made and the commit tagged? You would recreate something like release/23.08 from the tag, right?
