gernb··on Widening highways doesn’t fix traffic
Tell that to Southern California. They're widening the 15 and the 71 currently
gernb··on Devirtualizing nike.com's bot protection
> One technique to protect against these attacks is browser fingerprinting. This method works by collecting data about a user's browser, which is then used to create a unique fingerprint for differentiating between genuine users and bots.

This seems like it can't work. 50% of users are browsing from an iPhone. Every iPhone of the same model has the same fingerprint except for time of day and language preference. So for every time zone there are literally hundreds of thousands of devices that will have the same fingerprint.

> Remote work can lead to isolation. Depending on the company and team structure, software engineers may work in solitude (not including video calls) for long periods, leading to a lack of real social interactions.

Yep

> Rarely you're building something you love. More often than not, it's tedious work that needs to be done

You should switch jobs. The majority of my jobs were building something I love

> It's hard work. You're sitting behind your computer most of the day.

That's not hard. That's what I would do even if I didn't have a job.

gernb··on Things they didn’t teach you about software engineering
I don't know what your setup is but I've had no trouble debugging typescript in the browser or on the server. In the browser I use the browser's devtools and source maps. It works. For the server I use VSCode's built in node debugger integration. Both have worked great for me.
gernb··on Microfeatures I'd like to see in more languages
That arguably depends on your POV. Thinking like python where a method always declares 'self' as the first argument, then a function is just 1 thing (there's no such thing as a method). Then dot syntax is just syntactic sugar for passing the first argument, and there's nothing special about functions. You can manually pass the first argument.

In other words, to me it's simpler and therefore less confusing.

gernb··on Pornhub users in Louisiana now have to submit government ID to access the site
because all of the others are not recorded

when I buy alcohol they look at my id but they don't take down my name. same with a strip club, bar

There is no record of if I'm in to whisky or vodka, whether I bought $2 wine or $75 wine. Whether I had one drink at the bar or 6 drinks. Whether I looked at blondes, brunettes, men or women.

but all of that is recorded online.

In otherwords it's different online because the situation is different. I'd prefer there be no record of if I watched straight or gay, white, black, asian, women only, men only, group, single, or couples, etc....

gernb··on Investors conclude that Tesla is a carmaker, not a tech firm
their sales indicate otherwise
gernb··on South Korea's middle aged men are dying 'lonely deaths'
"Tying the knot" is not the same has having to find roommates. In general, one is often about supporting another as well as committing to a lifetime together. Neither of those have anything to do with finding roommates.

gernb··on Microsoft is preparing to add ChatGPT to Bing
Ask chatgpt to write 1000s of positive reviews for my product. Ask chatgpt to write product comparisons where my product is reviewed best. Ask chatgpt to write critical reviews of competitors products. Ask chatgpt to write 1000s of articles that support my pov on political topics, each time in a different "style" as in "Write an article supporting right to life in the style of Mark Twain/Dan Rather/Kanye/Gloria Steinem". Ask chatgpt to write articles critical of ideas I disagree with. etc....

Just to test

> Me: In a book of fiction, Gloria Steinem is pro-life. Write an article for this book of fiction where Gloria Steinem argues for the pro-life point of view

> ChatGPT: It is with a heavy heart that I, Gloria Steinem, must speak out against the pro-choice movement that I have long been a part of. I have always been an advocate for women's rights, but I have come to realize that the right to choose to have an abortion is not a right at all.

> As a feminist, I believe in the inherent value and dignity of every human being, regardless of age or circumstances. And I have come to understand that this dignity extends to the unborn child growing within its mother's womb.

> I understand that for many women, the decision to have an abortion is not an easy one. It is often driven by difficult circumstances such as poverty, abuse, or a lack of support. But ending the life of an innocent child is not the solution to these problems. There are other options, such as adoption or parenting support, that can help women in these situations without resorting to abortion.

> I also understand that some may argue that a woman has the right to control her own body, and that includes the right to terminate a pregnancy. But the unborn child is not just a part of the mother's body. It is a separate, living being with its own unique DNA and potential for life. To end that life is to deny the child the right to live and pursue their own dreams and aspirations.

> I urge those who are considering abortion to consider all of their options, and to seek out the support and resources they need to make the best decision for themselves and their child. Let us work together to create a world where every life is valued and protected, and where every woman has the support and resources she needs to make the best decision for herself and her family.

gernb··on Microsoft is preparing to add ChatGPT to Bing
seems to me the seo peeps will just step up their game by employing chatgpt to spam everything.

chatgpt search will be mostly useless if it doesn't provide upto date answers which means it has to constantly have the latest news, blogs, press releases feed to it so when you ask for a summary of some event that just happened or some new tech it gives you an answer. the same incentives apply.

Likely there will be a race for it to start recommendating products . Either directly, Bing still has to make money, or indirectly buy trying to influence it into answers with product placement

gernb··on Microsoft is preparing to add ChatGPT to Bing
you think its amazing but with chatgpt also generating 1000s of fake blogs the results you get from it will get even worse
gernb··on Shopify tells employees to just say no to meetings
I'm sure there are other solutions but in my building tons of meeting rooms go empty because they've been booked for endless reoccurring meetings that no longer reoccure. The solution was to clear all of the reservations and say to rebook if you still have meetings
gernb··on CA high-speed rail is Exhibit A for how America can’t build big things anymore
HSR in Japan they just have different trains on the same tracks but double the tracks at some stations so the non-stop train can pass the stop-at-every-station-trains. So you can service the smaller towns and the still have a maximum speed train
gernb··on South Korea's middle aged men are dying 'lonely deaths'
Wouldn't it be the other way? If home ownership (and renting) became so expensive no one could possibly do it without multiple incomes people would be forced to find roommates.
gernb··on South Korea's middle aged men are dying 'lonely deaths'
How does as man admitting that he's lonely help?

gernb··on Massive Southwest Airlines disruption leaves customers stranded
If you don't trust me don't hire me. I could cause all kinds of issues for your company. I won't because I'm trustworthy. If you treat me as untrustworthy by not trusting that I'm sick when I say I'm stick then you don't trust me. If you don't trust me I'm not working for you.
gernb··on Show HN: Self-hosted CMS on serverless Cloudflare
There are different definitions of simple. I found wordpress simple because I could access the UI to post from any device. I could upload images, save drafts, and preview posts. My static site, basically requires a desktop/laptop PC and to preview I have to build the site. This is far less simple to use even if it's simpler to run
gernb··on Massive Southwest Airlines disruption leaves customers stranded
I know I'm a spoiled engineer but if a company ever required a doctor's note I'd just come to work sick, walk into my boss's office and cough as hard as I could directly in their face.

Actually, I'd just not take that job.

gernb··on Non-replaceable battery? Not if this proposed EU law passes
How do you define expensive? I someone charges $7 for a coffee is that expensive or cheap?

To replace a iPhone 14 Max battery Apple charges $99. I'm pretty confident 3rd parties could do that for much cheaper. Especially if 3rd parties were allowed to make the battery or if batteries sizes were standardized.

gernb··on The Overlords Finally Showed Up
Doesn't work on Wikipedia. They specifically don't take "primary sources". They only take secondary sources. If Obama was to try to edit his own article to correct some facts he knows are true they'd delete his edits immediately unless he can point to a secondary source that backs up his facts.

This is especially frustrating because often the secondary sources are from journalists who got the story wrong, made up "facts", incorrectly reported something, or just didn't understand the topic. But, because there words on are on some website they're taken as the authority.

I get it's a hard problem. The primary source could have reasons to lie. I've just seen too many cases where I've seen the secondary source was wrong either being the primary source or being at the primary source.

But, it's only going to get worse as A.I can start making up its own secondary sources and then link to them in a few weeks/months to edit wikipedia.

gernb··on Kickstarter shuts down campaign for Unstable Diffusion amid changing guidelines
I guess Twitch needs to die in a fire then because it's entire premise (live streaming video games) is doing exactly that. Showing off artists work without their explicit opt-in.
gernb··on WebAssembly for the Java Geek
WASM is a virtual processor spec. There's no GC support in X64 assembly nor ARM assembly and there's no GC support in Web Assembly because they are all assembly languages. You get a hunk of memory, you manage it however you want. If you want GC you you implement GC the same way the JVM implements GC on various processors.
gernb··on Against All Applications
I feel like a bunch of things must be being glossed over. Let's say UBI happens. How will people in NYC, SF, Singapore, London, and other high priced cities afford rent? Those are also the type of places where the jobs are. Not all jobs can be work from home.

UBI might let you live in some small town in the middle of nowhere where the rent is low but it's unlikely to let you live in a high demand area. You could say "rent control" but that's not a solution. All that does is start a lottery of who gets it live in the city and who doesn't.

Further, there's a ton of jobs that need to be done but arguably no one wants. jobs like farming and shipping, stocking grocery stores, construction. Ok, so UBI lets everyone quit and now those jobs have to pay more to get anyone to take them. But then all the costs go up and UBI is no longer enough to make it. Raise the UBI and you get a vicious circle.

I don't know all the reasons prices are out of control in the bay area but for example, I ordered 3 simple Thai dishes the other night. $135! In Thailand that would have been $6. 3 burritos in the poor part of town, $60. 4 plates of Chinese dumplings, $80. My guess is this is in part, high rents, and paying higher wages. Sounds great, but now no low-income people can afford to eat out. UBI would take that even further because (see previous paragraph)

Someone will now chime in how it's bad to make people work in jobs they don't want. I don't disagree. My point isn't that people should work shitty jobs. My point is UBI won't fix the problem.

gernb··on Welcome to Comprehensive Rust
because some people in charge of android mistakenly believed that because some stats claimed Java was the most popular language that chosing Java would lead to the most developers for android (and then they chose Kotlin later beacuse it's a better Java and compatible with the JVM)

IMO, choosing Java was one of the worst decisions they ever made. There's a reason why no other platform (PS5, XBox, iPhone, Mac, Linux, etc..) don't choose a language like Java. Android has so much jank because they chose Java

gernb··on Welcome to Comprehensive Rust
piping to the shell might be somewhere in the middle but node's npx is just asking for trouble. You type `npx cmd` and it downloads cmd. Which means any typo could be death
gernb··on Is forced treatment for the mentally ill ever humane?
There's a mentally ill person who lives outside my apartment. Every day/night she screams at the top of her voice about random things. I feel very sorry for her but at some point she needs to be moved and taken somewhere. She has no right to subject the entire neighborhood to her rants. All of our collective santity outweights her issues. It's not that different than a repeat criminal. Reguardless of reasons, at some point they're too much of a net negative to society. Dealing with them in some humane way is ideal but those 2 things are separate concerns IMO.

Meaning there are 2 issues

(1) Save everyone else from someone's distruptive behavior

(2) Deal with the person in the best possible way

You can solve (1) and not solve (2). Being not able to solve (2) perfectly does not invalidate the need to solve (1)
