gerhardi··on Taping of Farm Cruelty Is Becoming the Crime
Why did the original posting get deleted? On to the topic, this is just ridiculous, how can anyone vote for such a law?
gerhardi··on S. Korean Banks Fall Victim to Biggest Cyber Attack in Two Years
If they don't, they still probably have some offshore funds which they can use to hire criminal groups to perform such attacks.

Anyway with current information one can only speculate on what just happened in Korea and who was behind it.

gerhardi··on Sexism is not funny, let's stop laughing
You shouldn't eat tomatoes because I don't like them.
gerhardi··on Sexism is not funny, let's stop laughing
If I happen to think that it is funny, who has the right to say that my opinions or the feelings that the "sexist jokes" bring to my brain are wrong? Obviously one should also try to minimize the amount of content that may possibly cause harm to any number of people in the target audience, but the problem has a very abstract nature going all the way down to how and where to say what to whom and who gets to decide whats right and what's wrong.

I often laugh at sexist jokes concerning both men and women. I don't take those jokes personally but I also agree that one has the right to disagree and express their opinions towards the content of different media. (if-by-whiskey?..)

gerhardi··on The Income Rich Take One For The Team. Thanks!
I find it weird that you can reduce charity contributions from taxation. Isn't it like grant for the rich to "choose where they pay their taxes"? And have nice dinners...
gerhardi··on Show HN: Nasdaq Dubstep
This made me think about procedurally generated / data feed based game music.. how about never ending background music that's never (almost) the same than before?
gerhardi··on Get The Most Out Of SlideShare
BUZZWORD ALARM - Basics of effective presentations, distribution, platform gimmicks and marketing are nowadays called Growth Hacking. It is great that they have discovered HACKS like:

4. ~Let people know where to get more information

7. ~Stuff on the internet can be searched with search engines - have you thought about how your particular stuff pops out in searches?

11. ~Tell people that you have made a presentation about something

(I'm sorry to be an ass)

gerhardi··on Young, Unemployed and Living on the Street
I tend to think that 'Follow your dreams' is a good advice, but at the same time I also realize that I have to work (a non-dream job) to be able to do so! Many probably don't take into account that following one's dreams doesn't come for free.

For example if my dream was to write novels, I wouldn't take a loan and just write with hope to hit the jackpot but I would have to do some regular work to support my dream: writing.

gerhardi··on Darpa begins work on 100Gbps wireless tech with 120-mile range
Wow.. this certainly sounds like a big leap, but I think that this will not succeed during the next 10 years. This would allow an whole army of remotely controlled drones with realtime sensor data and high definition video to operate within a quite large area. How many UAV:s operating within the same area can be nowadays handled simultaneously through one "command center"?
gerhardi··on Marketing hacks to boost your startup

Why don't you just try the Feedback? What could possibly get worse..
gerhardi··on A list of systems, applications, and libraries that are written in C++
Yes, C++ has been and will stay as the language of choice for many major free and commercial apps. It's not very surprising as there exists quite a lot of professionals with skills in C++ and the performance of applications written in C++ is generally very good.
gerhardi··on 100,000 stars
I wonder if there are clusters where distance between neighbouring stars are much less than with Sun and Proxima Centauri. Would these locations provide better opportunities for space faring civilizations to reach other star systems?
gerhardi··on Google Fiber is live in Kansas City, real-world speeds at 700 Mbps
It is a little bit strange that in this community there seems to be floating surprisingly lot of opinions in the spirit of "Who needs more than 640k RAM?". I find it obvious that more storage and faster network connectivity both are immediately benefiting consumers. Almost everyone produces or consumes some form of digital media and with ongoing improvements in quality of these products, the requirements for comfortably storing and transferring of media are rising also.

I think that a lot of people from kids to elderly ones are sharing their digital photos or videos and in my opinion it clearly improves the experience when you upload somwhere or drag-and-drop your 500 vacation pictures to your aunt in your favorite IM and BOOM - they are already transferred instead of waiting for minutes or even hours.

gerhardi··on Kim Dotcom’s Mega goes online at Mega.co.nz
Unmetered non-US servers with monthly payments are not that rare commodity nowadays.. well, especially when compared to gold bar crapping camelids :)
gerhardi··on Ask HN: what would you pay a 50$/m subscription for?
That would seem good, but I don't personally need it at the moment. But I can see it as a very helpful service for someone else!
gerhardi··on Ask HN: what would you pay a 50$/m subscription for?
50 bucks it is, so..

Personal:

- If IMDB offered service with HD quality click-to-stream for every title they have listed

- Drop&collect laundry service for basic clothing

- Home delivered grocery subscription for relatively cheap basic stuff which don't rot quickly like pasta, rice, flour, cheese, butter, sugar, coffee, spices, canned tomatoes, etc.

Work related:

- Beefy enough VPS

- Book-keeping for small business

- Leased laptop

- Seat in open floor co-working space with electricity and network connectivity

gerhardi··on PayPal Bans Major File-Hosting Services Over Piracy Concerns
I hate to make this irrelevant Bitcoin related comment.. But out of the places where I have made purchases online, I haven't encountered a single place accepting Bitcoins. Today there's NO Bitcoin, at least for me.
gerhardi··on HTC wins swipe to unlock patent dispute against Apple
I just hope that someone in a high enough position would roar "STOP THE MADNESS!". These kind of patent trials are only harming the end consumer. What kind of legislation even makes it possible to patent things like "Method of swinging on a swing" ( http://www.google.com/patents/US6368227 )?
gerhardi··on Nikon D600 (affordable full-frame camera) leaked
Depth of field is exactly the same between full frame sensor and crop sensor with the same aperture and same focal length. The difference comes to play when you use the same aperture and same field of view - different focal lengths, ex. 50mm f/2.8 on crop and 75mm f/2.8 on FF-sensor. You can consider the crop sensor just as the name says - a crop from the full frame image.
gerhardi··on 860k Stratfor Accounts Dump
If the account does not hold any "vital" information, password "stratfor" could be quite a harmless password to leak, as I couldn't imagine anyone using that password for any other site/account. Although I don't know what user information is contained within the account.

Anyway, it is stupid to use such passwords and it tells something about the persons using those. Maybe they would use site names as passwords on other sites also.

gerhardi··on Poll: How many hours do you work a week?
Well.. I work for a large international IT-consulting corporation at a client site. I go to work at 8 AM and leave around 4 PM. So this makes.. umm.. 40 hours per week. During normal 8 hour office day I usually attend meetings for around 1-2 hours, chat around with fellow consultants and client personnel for 2-3 hours, solve client issues alone or with colleagues for 1-3 hours. For the rest of the day I drink coffee and read HN + other web sites.

Yes - I feel sometimes that my job is somewhat boring and that I should be doing something more "activating" but I: - get reasonable salary - do my job very well - have great work/life balance

So maybe there is not so much to complain.
