gerash··on Waymo has received our pilot permit allowing for commercial operations at SFO
I believe TSLA also represents their humanoid robot segment with some questionable addressable market definitions done by investment analysts. I believe it’s overvalued but they are a forcing function for the other tech companies to push ahead
gerash··on US reportedly forcing TSMC to buy 49% stake in Intel to secure tariff relief
It's not as simple as that. IIUC the tariff is no where near the difference in the cost of production in the US. https://youtu.be/uDGkkqllQa8?t=1144&si=vxhJH-JgMf6Pk9A7
gerash··on DOJ, FBI conclude Epstein had no "client list," committed suicide
I think JFK and Nixon fate were not crazy conspiracies either after all.

The media in the west is also no different from arms of state propaganda unfortunately.

gerash··on Iran asks its people to delete WhatsApp from their devices
what even is the point other than "the Israel lobby said so"? Creating "liberal democracies" is certainly not it or else an ISIS mercenary wouldn't have been installed in place of Bashar al asad?

US itself is not a representative democracy either.

gerash··on Iran asks its people to delete WhatsApp from their devices
So the intelligence community doesn't know as much as what you heard on TV?
gerash··on Iran asks its people to delete WhatsApp from their devices
Listen to likes of John Mearsheimer. They see things from a crisper perspective without all this propaganda
gerash··on Iran asks its people to delete WhatsApp from their devices
everyone says they want it to fall but then you look at what happened to Libya or Syria where one is in a civil war and the other is now run by an Israel/US backed former ISIS mercenary and then you think maybe that's not the right process for a regime change.
gerash··on OpenAI to buy AI startup from Jony Ive
The video Altman posted on Twitter is so cringe I wouldn’t be surprised if it was directed by Mike Judge
gerash··on OpenAI for Countries
locality is good for resilience and latency but for privacy? how does it work?

How can one audit that the bytes going from a DC in country A to a DC in the US is not the user queries but some telemetry data for example? Presumably you don't get to look at the unencrypted packets

gerash··on Google contract prevented Motorola from setting Perplexity as default assistant
This comment demonstrates many just read the rage bait headlines and don't really get much useful news these days.
gerash··on Google contract prevented Motorola from setting Perplexity as default assistant
It seems the probability of being guilty in the current justice system is a function of how many persistent enemies you have and not how just or unjust your actions are.
gerash··on ChatGPT now performs well at GeoGuesser
I ran a few of these geo guess queries between OpenAI O3 and Gemini Pro 2.5 and O3 does much better on average.

It does spend an order of magnitude longer time on inference by searching through websites and analyzing the image but it often produces an impressive output. To me it also feels Gemini down samples the image as it tends to have a harder time reading small text vs O3.

That said O3 did tend to confidently say false things

gerash··on OpenAI is building a social network?
I believe the play here is:

1. Look "Studio Ghibli" went viral, let's capitalize

2. Switching cost for LLMs are low. If we can't be the best let's find other ways to lock our users in and make our product super sticky

gerash··on No elephants: Breakthroughs in image generation
depends on the use case.

I used GPT-4o for some image editing (adding or removing things) to an image of a person and they distort the look of the people after each edit but (Gemini Flash + image out) did much better.

The main problem is there is little control. For example I asked to add a helicopter to an image in a ski resort but then it seems cumbersome for me to have to write a full paragraph to describe where exactly I want this helicopter to be rather than if I could just do it by dragging things with a mouse.

gerash··on Apache ECharts
what's the best way to use a JS visualization library like this while using python for data extraction / manipulation in a notebook format (eg. Jupyter notebook, Google Colab, etc.) ?
gerash··on Gemini Robotics
The problem with HN is people with little expertise in an area confidently claim things that are woefully wrong
gerash··on DOJ: Google must sell Chrome, Android could be next
Softbank
gerash··on uBlock Origin is no longer available on the Chrome Store
Is all this “privacy” and “monopoly” outrage about a loud group of people wanting to watch YouTube videos without watching ads or paying a dime?

Do they also get outraged when Costco “abuses its monopoly” as soon as they stop providing free samples or cheap hotdogs?

gerash··on Should managers still code?
Of course they should. The volume does not matter as much as the depth. alternatively you could ask "Should managers understand the domain in which they work"?
gerash··on What's Going on at the FBI?
US institutions aka. bureaucracy isn't without its own issues. I believe that's why people voted in a rather unusual person like Trump whose main feature is being outside the establishment.

It is the US institutions who have happily engaged in endless foreign wars over past several decades. They have also enacted low corporate taxation resulting in high stock prices but even larger wealth gap where few winners take all the profits.

gerash··on Ask HN: Google forcibly enabled Gemini in our Corp Org. How to disable?
I'm not sure what this post even means. You either trust the provider or not. you are already uploading your corporate content via Drive, Gmail, Calendar, etc. but suddenly another service is a security and privacy risk?

MS office has taken the same route (in fact Goog simply copied their strategy of including copilot)

So you might want to look for a totally different provider

gerash··on My Favorite Book on AI
Is he recommending the book because MS hired Suleyman?
gerash··on Carlsen disqualified from World Rapid and Blitz championship for wearing jeans
Good on him. Stupid rule, stupid enforcement.
gerash··on Apple Photos phones home on iOS 18 and macOS 15
I don't mind the whole use of ML based features even if it requires elaborate schemes to run some computation in the cloud in some privacy preserving manner.

However I do see that Apple marketing campaign tried to fool people into thinking somehow non Apple are not private and only Apple provides privacy.

gerash··on Ask HN: SWEs how do you future-proof your career in light of LLMs?
Two thoughts:

1. Similar to autonomous driving going from 90-99% reliability can take longer than 0-90%.

2. You can now use LLMs and public clouds to abstract away a lot skills that you don't have (managing compute clusters, building iOS and Android apps, etc.). So you can start your 3 person company and do things that previously required 100s of people.

IMHO LLMs and cloud computing are very similar where you need a lot of money to build an offering so perhaps only a few big players are going to survive.

gerash··on How Google spent 15 years creating a culture of concealment
I'm talking about an internal forum. people don't ask for their manager's permission or review before leaving a comment on an internal forum.
gerash··on How Google spent 15 years creating a culture of concealment
Exactly, the legal system's job is not necessarily finding the truth. It's who can convince the judge/jury better even if they use nasty tactics.
gerash··on How Google spent 15 years creating a culture of concealment
The story is simple:

Google communication culture started as open and relaxed so people could go on a public internal forum and say their opinion "I think if we add x, y, z feature we can kill the competition". This is nothing specific to Google, it happens perhaps everywhere but Google wasn't policing it in written communication.

Then all these written opinions were gobbled up by lawyers during the discovery phase of endless lawsuits Google has to defend. It created constant headache so they said, we'll auto delete chats older than a few days unless you opt-out.

Now a court and this article say they are destroying evidence.

I've personally lost my trust in both the media and the legal system honestly. The incentives are just not aligned with good outcomes. The incentive for the media is more and more drama and the incentives for lawyers is always adversarial depending on who they represent.

gerash··on Is Chrome the New IE? (2023)

gerash··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
I find Safari to be a fantastic product overall both on desktop and mobile but I have stuck to Chrome to keep my options open in future in case I want to use non-Apple hardware
