geori··on ZX Spectrum: Experimenting with 1-Bit Sound
Reminds me of an experiment that we did with TI calculators in the late 90s. Someone found that you can put an AM radio next to the calculator and it would beep based on what instructions were run on the Z80. There were some demos that played songs via 1 bit beeps like this, but since games actually have to run instructions, you couldnt reliably play background music during gameplay.
geori··on Anthropic tells staff to work from home due to possible security team strike
Lol at "On secondary markets, investors have propelled the company to a $1.5 billion valuation."
geori··on Mag 7 starting to underperform [pdf]
OMG - ridiculous to evaluate it based on the last 3 mo.
geori··on Noam Shazeer Joins OpenAI
He merged it with SpaceX, quickly created a few colossal datacenters for training runs and somehow turned that into a 3T company.

geori··on The Multi-Path Career
I worked as CTO of two companies for about a year. I tended to work a full day for one company then a full day for the other to lessen the context switching. It was hard work, but it was fun and very beneficial to both organizations. You really do focus on editing (what projects matter, what solutions matter, which candidates do we offer, coaching w 1x1s) which has much more of an impact than IC work. In fact, the only issues I ever had were classic time x resource tradeoffs, since I so little time for IC work.

geori··on Ask HN: Which book helped you understand the world?
48 Laws of Power

The Power Broker

History of Western Philosophy

geori··on Ask HN: Thoughts on new GitHub layout?
It looks like Gitlab. I wondered if i was on the correct site.
geori··on Salaries Get Chopped for Many Americans Who Manage to Keep Jobs
Anecdotally: I'm CTO at a custom apparel manufacturer. Demand plummeted for events and foot traffic at our customer's stores died, so nobody is buying high end suits. Our revenue is now 20% of what it was back in January. We got our PPP loans, so we kept everyone in the USA employed, but had to cut all salaries above $50k by 25%. And we will probably have to have a second round of cuts and have some layoffs in June.
geori··on Facebook executives shut down efforts to make the site less divisive
So Neal Stephenson wrote a book about this - at least the good half of the book - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall;_or,_Dodge_in_Hell

It's 20 years in the future where facebook and similar services are much, much worse. Wealthy people pay for editors to remove misinformation from their feeds. And the country gets bifurcated with coastal elites having access to editors and flyover country ("Ameristan") has turned into a conspiracy plagued wasteland.

geori··on Ask HN: Mind bending books to read and never be the same as before?
48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene
geori··on How Stripe Designs Websites (2017)
The information hierarchy is unclear because they did not use best practices in design. As the other commenters said, you have to read it like a book. A better site would have larger, bold headings with darker text than the body text. There would be more padding between the sections. There would be a jumbotron at the top that identifies the top 1-3 reasons for me to use this site, so I can understand in 5 seconds if I want this service and don't have to spend 3 minutes reading the entire text.
geori··on Ask HN: Advice for a new and inexperienced tech lead?
Listen to the manager tools podcast.
geori··on Effectively Using Materialized Views in Ruby on Rails
How often does rails refresh the materialized views? And is it automatic or do you have to explicitly refresh them?
geori··on Ask HN: Burning Out
Definitely talk to the founders. Founders probably have no idea you are considering leaving and would be shocked if you leave without voicing your concerns. Founders ALWAYS want to talk with key employees who are considering leaving. You are unlikely to get compensated with what you deserve, but they can definitely create a better working environment for you. Even if things don't work out and you do leave, you'll walk out of things with a good reference and network from the founders because you left on good terms.
geori··on Ask HN: What's the point of the TM and (R) symbols?
To maintain a trademark and fight back infringement you have to repeatedly claim it by putting those annoying symbols after it.

geori··on Show HN: Experience Colorblindness on the Web
I'm very color blind and I don't think this extension correctly handles red-green color blindness. If you take a look at http://www.colourblindawareness.org/colour-blindness/ and see their examples of Deuteranopia, they are exactly what I see. When the app shows the Deuteranopia view, I think the extension modifies colors that aren't red and green.
geori··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2018)
iDesign | Sr Frontend Engineer / Jr Frontend Engineer / Fullstack Engineer | FULL-TIME | Jackson, MS / Remote - US Only | idesignpbp.com

iDesign is a company that makes high end suits and custom clothing for tailors. We're growing fast, planning to have $30M of sales this year, and are building out the engineering team.

We're looking for Frontend Engineers with React experience to work closely with our product designer on a redesign our custom clothing ordering experience.

We're also looking for Fullstack Engineers with Ruby on Rails experience to independently develop new applications that help support our customers.

If you're interested, email me at hmaddox (at) idpbp (dot) com.

geori··on Ask HN: What changes in your life did you make to become more productive?
Started my own company. I know why we're doing things and why they are important. And I know that if I don't do some things they won't get done.
geori··on Show HN: Anonymous interview evals of strong software/ML engineering candidates
Why are people with PHD and VPE level experience being slotted as junior engineers? It seems like a waste of time to recruit a senior person to a junior role.
geori··on Ask HN: What tech companies do you invest in?
I used to not pick tech stocks because of the diversification argument. However, I stopped that and now invest a good bit. Why? People in tech are going to be better at predicting the future than the equity research analysts at investment banks. Have confidence in yourself and make some picks.
geori··on Walmart to Buy Bonobos, Men’s Wear Company, for $310M
For those who have never heard of bonobos, their pants fit exceptionally well. Andy & co focused on doing one thing, having quality pants that fit really well. The fit of the clothing matters more than anything about bonobos and it is where most brands screw up.
geori··on I wrote the SQL query in 5 mins. Why does my engineer say it will take a month?
Adam, great to see you on HN. I assume you're the same ABS that founded calc.org. I always love seeing people from the TI Calculator community doing well.

geori··on Stop the Daily Standup Meeting
The point of a standup is to coordinate team communication in batches and not interrupt people at random times. We always finish it up in less than 15 minutes and then small groups meet afterwards about talking points.
