Location: Milwaukee, WI

Remote: Yes.

Willing to relocate: No.

Technologies: Typescript, Javascript, C#, NodeJS, Angular, React, Containers, SDLC, etc.

Résumé/CV: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MsVCS4UL3Sxt_3ko6YlesDyq... Email: george.frick@gmail.com

Hi, I'm George. I'm a passionate software developer with 17 years of experience across a variety of tech stacks and industries.

I'm currently building a portal for a client including loan application, dashboard, notifications, etc. This is in Angular, but I have done similar in React and other frameworks.

I'm looking to bring my experience and passion to an organization where I can make more of an impact. Please don't hesitate to reach out; I'm happy to talk shop.

My primary interested are education, fintech, and renewables.

georgefrick··on Thoughts on Svelte
I've been building an app with Sveltekit (ok, two); and I've proposed a talk at THAT conf in the summer. I agree with the author's positive and negative assessments, but really for me the developer experience outweighs the negatives.

In VS Code I turn on seeing short directories in the tabs, which prevents file confusion. Beyond that it's been a joy to use and pretty easy to get going with. Any confusion or learning comes from not doing next.js first and having to learn about which things happen where in terms of client and server. It's eye opening though and it isn't forced learning.

I give Sveltekit a "you should certainly consider it" vote.

georgefrick··on I still use Flash
Really awesome to see this. I've done some conversion work for Flash to PhaserJS for educational games. We had to just rewrite everything as we didn't even have the original source code. Luckily Phaser animations can get a lot of the "walk across and open a door" stuff done easily. I was also excited to see Hapland as I'd forgotten the name and so was never able to Google to find the games again!
georgefrick··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
"Its stock has slumped nearly 83 percent in the past year. Sales, which the company had expected to rise as much as 33 percent this year, are now likely to show only minor growth."

So they still showed growth, the stock just crashed; and the others in the segment who don't have to report numbers are doing better. Just sounds like a discounted stock to me.

georgefrick··on Ask HN: Has anyone managed to find enjoyment in their work after burnout?
I burned out in 2016 and worked really hard to recover. But the honest truth is I never cared the same again. I burned out worse in 2021 after almost 4 years; my client denied multiple PTO requests and I worked 12 months straight with just a few fridays off and I had to pull the trigger on "Roll me off the client or I'm gone". I took a month off of work. I'm still not the same, and I never will be. There is lots of good advice in this thread, but I honestly love writing code and just want to do it for someone who will pay me to kick ass for them. It's hard to just care less about my art. But I'll never care in the same way again, I work really hard to set boundaries and I'm much less invested in the outcome - which is sad and I miss feeling invested in the outcome. I don't have any advice for you; it sucks but it is reality.
georgefrick··on Ask HN: Non-violent video games with great stories?
The Thief series. It technically has violence... but I play the game on the hardest settings and the most you can do is sneak up and knock someone out.
georgefrick··on Ask HN: Have you found something you love to do? If yes how?
You can't find what you are passionate about, it's not something that gets discovered. You pick it and hone it. Getting experienced, acknowledged by peers, and executing from knowledge all come with time and dedication and you become passionate as you want to drive that thing forward. I've struggled with this myself, and learned over time that I'm passionate about delivering software - I love it. Now I look for the next harder/larger project and see if I can make a difference for that business.
georgefrick··on OnlyFans to block sexually explicit videos starting in October
Fairly good explanation of it being about far more than nudity. They have created a casino like experience for emotional interaction.

georgefrick··on What happens to all the dead electric-car batteries?
They get recycled? So much negativity here it's unreal, almost like there is an agenda.

georgefrick··on How I Manage My Random Daily Notes
I went from paper to a tablet for a year (as a challenge), ended up back on paper. My boss got me into using nicer notebooks, and I've been doing it for years (about 6). I then switched to MD files, eventually ending up using Stackedit extensively for a while similar to the tablet effort. Now, between work, hobbies, being a DM; I've given up and spent some time in One Note... and now that's where I've migrated everything. I'm always interested in how others do this in case they've figured something out. I still use a paper notebook as a personal journal, important notes, etc. I also still use a notepad for those daily notes / thinking on paper that you can throw away at the end of the day.

georgefrick··on Show HN: Dungeon Map Doodler – Free online map drawing tool
I like both, but I'll probably 'move forward' with whichever one has masking working in a non-obtuse way first. With dungeon scrawler there is a pre-set that uses masks, but I've completely failed to figure out how to set it up on my own. I'd be willing to pay one-time fees to unlock art packs or other content to support the creators. But the dungeon fog style of wanting me to pay monthly... just... no.
georgefrick··on Ask HN: Has anyone migrated off containerized infrastructure?
> If I need quick hot fix RIGHT NOW, I can't just log in, change couple of lines and restart, must go through full deploy cycle.

This is a feature, not a bug. Really this speaks to the entire post; as these aren't "quirks". It has a side effect of blocking the "Hero Programmer".

georgefrick··on Engineer says Google fired her for notifying co-workers of right to organize

georgefrick··on MIDI Maze
When I was younger I used to get to play this at Gencon when it was still in Milwaukee. All around a good time and the tech is interesting.
georgefrick··on The case for vanilla front-end development
I do love to travel. I will write your app in Backbone, Angular, or React, or ??? depending on what we're building. It's hard to reply in a mature and productive way here; since you've called what some people do... bullshit. There is no silver bullet here that is the correct technical choice for all situations, and using some bad choices to say we're all making bad choices is short sighted. You could write a similar article about how people don't test, performance test, security test, or many 'tests'. We could have the same discussion. Not every situation is the same, and not every user is in a remote locale with no connection; but when they are we have to take that into account. If our app is for a north american bank in the midwest; then yes - why would we care about performance in the middle of Australia? Out in the real world, projects have priorities; from the customer, business, security, and even team (someone will have to take care of it). I don't appreciate the constant Slashdot style negativity going on in this and many other threads these days on HN. I wish you'd reconsider adding something constructive to the discussion.
georgefrick··on Open-Source Controller for the IKEA Bekant Standing Desk
I use and recommend the new Ikea Idasen.(https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S29280934/)

I put a different top on it though (a bamboo one)

georgefrick··on Open-Source Controller for the IKEA Bekant Standing Desk
I held off on the standing desk for a long time. When I saw the IKea Idasen, I knew they had solved the wobble problem. The desk is awesome and more people should consider it. I also specifically broke out the part numbers and only bought the base. I put a Bamboo top on it.

My monitor does also wobble a bit with the cheap vesa mount I have (it's also a ultra-wide). I'm still researching a proper arm to mount.

georgefrick··on For Owners of Ring Security Cameras, Strangers May Have Been Watching Too
From a technical stand point I agree. But the unit needs to open a connection to my phone, which is going to require reaching beyond my home network. It's hard to deliver a product to an end user this way, so in these cases the cloud means 'we manage the hard part for you'. So the cloud isn't a requirement, for well... us? But the average consumer, yes. I'm mostly playing devil's advocate here. I'd love a version of Ring where I could easily eliminate the middle man; but I recognize the value in what they've done. How we protect privacy sometimes seems to be an argument of confidence (Our own home network security VS a vendors), there are arguments to be made about centralizing some of it?
georgefrick··on For Owners of Ring Security Cameras, Strangers May Have Been Watching Too
I'd say, yes. I've been able to watch that many people see the ring (they see the camera), and they back right off the porch. It's been awesome in this respect, people simply ring it less. As far as the cloud stuff; I'm willing to make that sacrifice so that it can call my phone and i can see/talk to the person at the door. For family I get to literally let them in, and for others I can pretend to be home but uninterested.
georgefrick··on The Tesla Model 3 reminds me of the times the electronics failed in my first car
I assumed the article was written by an owner, or at least a reviewer - low and behold it's someone filling article quota? He purports that he thinks the electronics in it might break down on him, if he bought on. This article is thin as it is, and makes no point.
georgefrick··on New York Has a Great Subway, If You’re Not in a Wheelchair
There have been other attempts to bring awareness to this problem. Here is a half funny, half sad version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhpUJRGrZgc&ab_channel=Cereb...

I like the approach of sharing some data / statistics; but it would be nice if we could combine the two. The saturated humor when combined with the real information might make more of an impact.

georgefrick··on Modern JavaScript for Ancient Web Developers
We pulled a Backbone app up out of storage along with some others. Then we wrote a few more versions in modern frameworks. It's an internal comparison app. Two things of note. 1) We always start from the Backbone app, it's the easiest to convert to other frameworks. 2) It ran right out of the box, no problems. No library muck and no fixes. That being said I did eventually move on to writing new stuff in Angular2x, but I stand by Backbone as good and reliable.
georgefrick··on Angular 4.0.0 Now Available
Community here has been pretty negative on this lately. So I'll just add I've been using Angular 2x and also Ionic 2 the last year or so with great success. One real benefit we saw was the ability to take a lot of Backbone code and just quickly port it (models to services, templates just back to html for a component, etc). This is helping us help our enterprise clients in conversions of both older front end code and older Java EE code (for example JSP + Struts => Restful + NG2X).
georgefrick··on A chess position to defeat computers?
It's actually a shame, they failed to remove the obvious hint for this, which is the green x drawn on the hand drawn version of the puzzle.
georgefrick··on Introducing Create React Native App
Ionic (2) ? I've been using that with great results.
georgefrick··on Soylent halts sales of its powder as customers keep getting sick
I don't drink the coffee version, but I've otherwise had the exact same experience. It's so nice to have times when I can skip the whole "figuring out food" thing and grab a soylent. I keep a case or so of the pre-mixed liquid bottles around at all times now. At my various clients I generally leave one in the fridge. It's the meal I can eat during a meeting, and feel even less guilty about my Sunday night double cheeseburger.
georgefrick··on Why Learning Angular 2 Was Excruciating
I'm going to cry foul. Lines like "has a umd now. whatever a umd is.... " Stack Overflow copy pasta developers. If you're an associate level developer; the project should be setup for you. If you are above that, you should understand some of the internals and build tools to the point where you are comfortable wiring them.

Also, this has already been discussed; we get it. RC5/6/7 sucked for everyone (well, except those of us who were eagerly waiting for forms 2.0). Must we do daily "omg rc5 was painful" posts?

The change to ngModule took 15 minutes btw, more if you count all the code you got to remove from other components.
