geophertz··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
Whenever the master branch and slave branch thing comes up people say that it's fine because it has nothing to do with slavery.

The thing I don't understand is, even if it had something to do with slavery, why is that harmlful?

geophertz··on WhatsApp is more secure than iMessage: Mark Zuckerberg
Would you mind sharing who those independent fact checkers are?
geophertz··on WhatsApp is more secure than iMessage: Mark Zuckerberg
Except for the fact iMessage is well known for its RCEs as well: search for "iMessage RCE" you will find them.

Furthermore (this may not be the case anymore), iMessage is more privileged than other apps and so once exploited an attacker has a far greater reach.

geophertz··on NumWorks: An open-source graphing calculator (with Python and Rust support)
These calculators are very popular in France.

I know of a lot of teachers who use them for teaching.

geophertz··on How fast is 12th Gen Intel Core?
The only way to know would have been to compare the models :)
geophertz··on Help pick a syntax for CSS nesting
How about no?

Why do we need to add further complexity into the already complex thing that are browsers?

As the post mentions at the beginning, this can already be done with pre-processing. What do we gain by having more syntax sugar?

geophertz··on RustDesk – Open-source TeamViewer alternative
I don't think that statement refers to rust at all. It's just referring to the fact the software is open source and the user's data doesn't go through a third-party
geophertz··on OCaml Programming: Correct and Efficient and Beautiful
It still does according to the undergraduate program page https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/computer-s...

geophertz··on Zig self hosted compiler is now capable of building itself
> written in Zig instead of C++, uses significantly less memory, and represents a modest performance improvement

That's particularly interesting considering the rust compiler in rust has never been as fast as the original OCaml one

geophertz··on Google terminated our Developer Account, says it is “associated”
> At Google's scale, I don't think there are enough humans on Earth to deal with the abuse.

I disagree.

Some time ago, a person (on HN, although it may have been somewhere else) did an estimate of what it would take for Google to review all 500 hrs of video uploaded to YouTube every minute.

The result was that Google could more than afford it.

Based on that I don't see any reason Google couldn't add more humans to deal with these ban appeals.

geophertz··on No_color
What would prevent it from working with ncurses programs?
geophertz··on You can now send replies from your Duck Addresses
Once mozmail was blocked however the custom email domain (paid feature) was not.
geophertz··on “Fast Kernel Headers” Tree -v1: Eliminate the Linux Kernel's “Dependency Hell”
From what I understand, this was mostly done manually.

Would it have been possible to represent dependencies as a graph to obtain an optimal result?

geophertz··on OpenDrop: An open Apple AirDrop implementation written in Python

geophertz··on OpenDrop: An open Apple AirDrop implementation written in Python
Nearby Share is the Android equivalent.
geophertz··on OpenDrop: An open Apple AirDrop implementation written in Python

geophertz··on Chess.com vs. Lichess
One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the ability to play without logging in on lichess.

Very convenient when you want to play with a friend.

geophertz··on Grand jury subpoena for Signal user data, Central District of California
I can't help but think the fact the account creation date (and last connection date, although less so for that) are not censored for a reason.

The account creation date is basically equivalent to the phone number and would allow the owner of the account to know a subpoena was requested for them.

geophertz··on Microsoft's underwater data centre resurfaces after two years
The thing is that if putting data centers underwater solves the cooling problem, all the heat produced is wasted, so it this really a good solution?
geophertz··on Mars images rendered in 4K [video]
> I downloaded it with youtube-dl because I cannot stand the excessive adverts on Youtube these days.

Can't you use an ad-blocker?

geophertz··on Everybody Can Make DeepFakes Now [video]
In a certain way, I find the fact that everybody can make deepfakes positive for society.

Because we will finally stop trusting videos and images as a reliable proof, when they clearly aren't all the time.

geophertz··on Mozilla’s DNS over HTTPs
Unfortunately it's not so easy to black hole `use-application-dns.net` for parental control. (people don't run their own DNS server).

geophertz··on U.S. Officials Say Huawei Can Covertly Access Telecom Networks
What annoys me the most about the whole "Huawei fiasco" is the fact people were going to install proprietary product to run 5G, which meant that it ended in a strange speculation game. If only open and free hardware had to be used for such things, there wouldn't be any problems of putting blind trust into a foreign company.
geophertz··on Five Years of Btrfs
Is using btrfs on a personal machine something to do? It seems that all the comments as well as articles about it, just assume you're running it on a server.

The ability to add and remove disks on a desktop machine is very tempting.

geophertz··on Ask HN: What were your most impactful podcast episodes from 2019?
I just finished listening to "Episode 49: Elliot" and I must say, I'm quite upset by the host's reaction.

He doesn't seem at all to be someone in the security research field.

Either he has those reaction because this is a mainstream podcast and purposely tries to have a "dumb" reaction for his audience (like in a children's film) or he doesn't seem to understand hacker culture at all.

geophertz··on Linux Kernel 5.3
According to this article: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=WireGuar...

Wireguard won't be in before 5.5.

5.5 should release in early february 2020 so it might be in Ubuntu 20.04.
