geon··on The "Windows XP Box" (2003)
Very impressive to pull off such a compact build in 2003!

I built a Shuttle xpc cube in 2008. I though that was tiny. I specifically used a laptop hard drive to reduce noice.

I think it was this exact model: https://www.reddit.com/r/retrobattlestations/s/o2HKpeLmrA

It was my firts step away from windows. I ran ubuntu on it a couple of years until I switched to macos to do ios dev.

geon··on iPhone Duo
The mini was not mini enough.
geon··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
Breaches don’t happen often enough to be a useful metric. Most smaller companies are never breached, despite having basically zero security.
geon··on New type of dice guarantees no tie when deciding who goes first
You mean you roll a single die and use the value to index an array of players?

That’s the pragmatic solution. The article is about an interesting mathematical puzzle, not actually solving a real problem.

Also, an n-sided die is fair for 2 to n players if you discard rolls above the number of players.

Tillbaka till r/unket med dig.
geon··on Sweden pauses Denmark power cable over EU grid rules
Sweden is very well positioned due to well developed hydro, but when germany was forced to give up russian gas, more electricity was exported, causing record high prices.

Interestingly, the hydro plants are located in the north and the national power grid is not dimensioned for massive export, so the export to germany from the south of sweden caused a strong price gradient.

Array indexing?
geon··on Norway should buy OpenAI
> achieve AGI

They might as well invest in cold fusion, warm superconductivity, curing cancer or whatever sci-fi concept you have.

geon··on What sort of maths are LLMs good at?
That was not the prompt.
geon··on Tim Gowers: What sort of maths are LLMs good at?
Would the llm work better if it was given the job ad and asked where the job was located?

It seems to me that such simplified tasks tend work better. The rest of the loop is just scraping websites, which doesn’t really have a reason to rely on ai agents.

geon··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
You actually planned everything in advance, and didn't have to go back and correct mistakes?

Because if you ever go back a step, it is no longer the waterfall model, but an iterative process.

geon··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
Getting to a state where those assumptions are true is HARD. And takes a lot of careful programming.

Yes. Once it is true, the code is easy to write. But only because a lot of effort went into making it easy. And keeping it easy is also hard. Without focused effort to keep the code clean and easy to modify, it starts to rot.

geon··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
How does not everyone understand this? It's why waterfall development never worked.
geon··on Sorry, Sam and Elon, we have not reached the Singularity
An engineer using an llm is absolutely nothing like an llm itself being the engineer.

The most successful example so far of en llm developing on its own is the C compiler that ended up a broken buggy mess.

geon··on Sorry, Sam and Elon, we have not reached the Singularity
You mean anthropic and the others wouldn’t hype that up like there was no tomorrow?

Occams razor suggest there is nothing.

geon··on Sorry, Sam and Elon, we have not reached the Singularity
Exactly what technical advancement in the field of LLMs have LLMs themselves contributed to?

Because that’s the definition of a singularity. Unless they can point ant any concrete examples, the claims are completely meaningless.

geon··on Citizen of the Galaxy (full text) by Robert Heinlein
Probably my favorite Heinlein book.

I really like the part where [SPOILERS] he gets back to civilization and no one believes him when he tells them about the widespread slavery.

geon··on Git rebase -I is not that scary
I fix bugs will git bisect all the time. But it’s not practical if you don’t have a good commit history to begin with.
geon··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
Only low quality. But yes, building better quality shouldn’t cost $ 10k
geon··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
> You don't disable anything. You wrote a "trust me compiler" block, and compiler trusted you.

That’s the same thing.

geon··on 1-Bit LLM in the Browser
How is that not a fail?
geon··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
Aren’t ms completely dependent on consumer windows for mindshare?

I doubt anyone would bother getting into programming with ms tech unless they just happened to run it on their desktop.

geon··on Unified Memory, Explained: Why Mini PCs Can Run 70B Models a Big GPU Can't
Really? I broke my Geforce2 MX, so I had to make do without a graphics card for a couple of weeks. I think halflife ran ok in software mode on my Athlon XP 1700+.

I might be misremembering though. Perhaps I scavenged some basic pci card, but that should still have been worse than the ProSavage.

geon··on When AI Costs More Than the Engineer
Clever. Wish I had thought of that.
geon··on Rewriting Bun in Rust
Wouldn't the same improvements have been made in zig if they instructed the agents to improve instead of rewrite?
geon··on When AI Costs More Than the Engineer
Correct
geon··on When AI Costs More Than the Engineer
Garbage. You can't include training by the companies that develop an llm in the comparison against companies that merely use the same llm. Apples and potatoes.
geon··on You need a webring
If those are concerns to you, you are not really the target audience.
geon··on Steam Controller Auto-Charge – pilot to magnetic charging puck using CV
No. I thought it meant the haptic feedback was for a human to make it easier to find the charger in the dark ir something.
geon··on Do LLMs pass the mirror test?
No. The reasoning is just an illusion. As soon as you look at it closer, it falls apart completely.
