geomark··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
I sometimes wonder if people who are buying ads ever watch YT and see how irrelevant the ads are. Seems like a big waste of advertising budget.
geomark··on Cantonese Font with Pronunciation
yougetuseditafterawhile

The thing that bugs me about written Thai is that there are spaces now and then and you would expect them to be at sentence breaks but they seem to be randomly placed throughout the text, almost as if that's where the writer felt like he needed to take a breath instead of where one sentence ends and another begins.

geomark··on Starship Flight Test (Launch in 1 hour)
I find that part particularly, interesting, how fault tolerant the system is that such a number of engines fail to fire and it still looks like a nominal launch.
geomark··on Making friends as an adult is hard (2021)
Pro tip a friend let me in on: carry a guitar with you. Good if you can play it a little. If you are a man it makes you seem less threatening. People tend to be more open and friendly.
geomark··on Scratch is the world’s largest coding community for children
A few years ago I struggled to find a good next step to go from Scratch to Python. A couple of platforms advocated the approach of have one tab with block code and another with the equivalent text-based code. That didn't seem to work, because it was just easier for the kid to stay in the graphical tab and not really absorb what was happening in the text-based code.

I ended up making something myself, a web-based Python tutorial that uses Turtle graphics and trinket.io. It's more of a tutorial and not gamified and doesn't have substantial projects like building games. It introduces Python elements in steps where the student has to use them to draw some graphics using Turtle. Worked out pretty well to get my kid launched in the direction where he now does more substantial Python projects.

Added: I structured it using the PRIMM approach.

geomark··on We ran a phone check at a Y Combinator event in SF
When I had to visit a US embassy overseas I always had to turn over my phone before entering.
geomark··on More students are turning away from college and toward apprenticeships
One old timer welder once told me there's a good reason you don't see many people like him (old welders).
geomark··on More students are turning away from college and toward apprenticeships
I feel your pain. I worked in a furniture warehouse and delivered furniture, summers, in Phoenix.
geomark··on Show HN: Learn Python with Minecraft
We did it and we've never had education edition.
geomark··on Show HN: Learn Python with Minecraft
Is what you are doing similar to "Adventures In Minecraft"? [0]. My kid and I went through that and is was great. Last adventure involves hooking up a micro:bit to control in-game elements. [0] https://www.wiley.com/en-us/Adventures+in+Minecraft,+2nd+Edi...
geomark··on Making It Legal to Play Outside: “Reasonable Childhood Independence” Bills
As long as it's something sterile like playing video games it's fine. But as soon as a kid does something with a bit of substance it becomes child endangerment.
geomark··on Making It Legal to Play Outside: “Reasonable Childhood Independence” Bills
The most recent was when my kid did a review of two different multitools. Within five minutes of uploading it YouTube had taken it down due to "potential child endangerment."
geomark··on Making It Legal to Play Outside: “Reasonable Childhood Independence” Bills
It's even in the YouTube algorithm. I've had a couple of videos taken down due to "potential child endangerment". They were videos of me and my kid doing things that are, realistically, safer than riding a bicycle. It's pathetic how fragile kids are being made these days.
geomark··on Musk’s takeover turbocharged VC Twitter usage
I made the mistake of connecting with an old engineering colleague who has since become a "life coach" and I'm so sick of their life lessons posts and fake positivity but feel like I can't remove them from my network.
geomark··on $500 a Month, No Strings: Chicago Experiments with a Guaranteed Income
That is a more accurate description. Like organized crime forces you to buy its services under threat of violence if you don't, government forces you to pay taxes to fund its services under threat of violence if you don't. One difference is that you often can't even avail yourself of the services that the government is forcing you to pay for.
geomark··on Worst Rated Dishes in the World
I hate the smell, always have. Smells like rotten vegetables. But I have grown to like the taste, especially with khai jiaow cha-om (ไข่เจียวชะอม) (acacia shoots fried with egg, a sort of omelette).
geomark··on Worst Rated Dishes in the World
Thai people are up in arms that one of their favorite dishes, Kaeng som, is #10.
geomark··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
A cryptographically secure sequence is used to spread the signal or do frequency hopping. The baseband may not even be encrypted but the signal definitely is.
geomark··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
They may want to analyze the cryptographic comms. Having working electronics might make that easier.
geomark··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
Tangentially related. Spread spectrum signals are jamming resistant, have lower probability of intercept and can be effectively cryptographically secure.
geomark··on US still has the worst, most expensive health care of any high-income country
I'm not from the UK and don't have a horse in the race, but a lot of people from the UK have been coming to where I live (Thailand) to receive medical care since I have lived here (more than 20 years) to escape the wait times. The few I spoke with definitely did not call NHS a beacon.

My few conversations are certainly anecdotal. However, the numbers of UK medical tourists isn't; it was around 4,000 in 2010 and estimated to be around that number each year, according to this paper [1], although it acknowledges the number is underestimated.

geomark··on Story Structure 101: Super Basic Shit
Yes. I was hoping someone would mention the shape of stories.
geomark··on Steve Wozniak used to tip from printed sheets of $2 bills
1. The way it usually goes is they don't lie; they just say no when asked to provide ID.

2. It seems like the police officer has to be able to state what crime they suspect has been committed. Standing around looking suspicious is what usually draws attention but it isn't a crime so they just say no when the police ask for ID.

But that's for local police in some states. So again, is it different when you refuse ID to a federal officer? I think the answer is no, that there is no federal statute that requires you to identify yourself to a federal officer unless you are suspected of a committing a crime. But IANAL nor a member of law enforcement nor one of those ornery people who like to challenge the police and even hope they will be arrested on false pretenses so they can have fun suing the police.

geomark··on Steve Wozniak used to tip from printed sheets of $2 bills
Are you even legally required to provide ID to a federal officer? I know in some states that you are not required to provide ID to a police officer unless there is evidence you have committed a crime. Quite a few ornery citizens like to video themselves rejecting police officer's requests for ID.
geomark··on Study reveals average age at conception for men vs. women over past 250k years
Some cultures count the nine months in the womb. So you are nine months old on your date of birth.
geomark··on What not to write on your security clearance form (1988)
It was clear the examiner had no sense of humor. So no. But when he said I was being deceptive I asked "In what way?" And he said "You tell me." And so we ended in a standoff.
geomark··on What not to write on your security clearance form (1988)
I did that while taking a polygraph administered by a representative of a three letter agency. He said I was being deceptive.
geomark··on Thonny – Python IDE for beginners
"...adding packages is just about 2 clicks."

Thanks for that. I spent part of the day fighting with my kid's Windows 11 PC to properly install the requests module in the Python IDLE, without success. He had Thonny already installed and installing requests was a snap.

geomark··on Walker’s Manly Exercises
The jungle gym was the grim reaper of my schoolyard.
geomark··on The California roll was invented by a Japanese-Canadian chef (2020)
Where I live we have "American breakfast." It's fried rice with ketchup in it, some little hotdogs and a fried egg. Cursed.
