geoffreyy··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2021)
Figure | Full-time | Engineers | Remote/SF

Figure is a modern compensation platform that helps companies centralize their data, set their pay structure, benchmark themselves against similar companies in realtime, and communicate total rewards to their candidates and employees. Figure streamlines painful and complicated manual compensation processes into simple, secure, and collaborative workflows - say goodbye to spreadsheets. Our mission is to bring equity and transparency to compensation -- for companies, employees, and candidates. The founders were both previously software engineers building products at scale at companies like Uber, Instacart, Flexport and Checkr.

geoffreyy··on List of companies going full remote after Covid
Not yet sorry, pretty busy doing other stuff but if this becomes helpful and interesting to people I will look into adding this feature! Thanks for the recommendation
geoffreyy··on List of companies going full remote after Covid
I just ended up paying $5/mo to have 10M worker requests per month. Not too bad.
geoffreyy··on List of companies going full remote after Covid
That's very fair, I will fix some of the copy to be more accurate.

geoffreyy··on List of companies going full remote after Covid
Sorry guys, it was a busy day and just realized this kinda picked up, cloudflare workers reached their limit and I am now looking into a solution.

In the meantime, it can be accessed via https://www.notion.so/cd2571b6bd0b434f8bf2042d5fa0d6ea

fixed, sorry about that.
geoffreyy··on Show HN: To fight quarantine boredom I build a site to watch movies with friends
I agree and that's why I pointed it out. you could literally just put any URL to any website and call it a party if there is no sync capabilities.
geoffreyy··on Show HN: To fight quarantine boredom I build a site to watch movies with friends
similar to netflixparty.com except:

- it also supports prime/youtube/vimeo

- it has an audio/video chat instead of a simple text chat

- it doesn't require a chrome extension

- it doesn't actually sync across the viewers? (start time, play/pause)

does it mean you can literally support other platforms without any integration?

geoffreyy··on Ask HN: Early stage employees, how much was your equity worth?
I don't want to get into some funky forward contract and would prefer to do it with the consent of my board. But if the problem persist I will likely be interested in the future.
geoffreyy··on Ask HN: Early stage employees, how much was your equity worth?
I mainly found buyers from inbound emails and via SharesPost, EquityZen and Equidate (Forge). I am not on the board. The way I approached this, was to be upfront with the potential buyers and letting them know that the board is not allowing any transaction as far as I know. Then we would draft a contract with their broker team and I would be sending it to my previous company's general counsel or CEO. Each time it was received and responded to with "We do not authorize any transactions for now. Thanks, bye" which was very frustrating. No recent outside investment AFAIK.
geoffreyy··on Ask HN: Early stage employees, how much was your equity worth?
Left the company 8 months ago but if I could sell everything right now (which I would) I could be getting 3-4M pre-tax money. However my board is rather inflexible and won't allow any secondary sale, even though I went ahead and found many buyers and even got into sale contracts... So I am pretty much sitting on paper money until the market crash and I get screwed along with the other employees while the founders were able to sell anytime :)
geoffreyy··on Launch HN: Compound (YC S19) – helping employees understand equity compensation
Well I didn't manage to solve the chicken & egg issue where there was no value for someone to put up their offer if there was no community adding feedback. I reached 500 users by posting on Blind app but not enough stickiness. I am open sourcing it next and hope to give it a new life!
geoffreyy··on Launch HN: Compound (YC S19) – helping employees understand equity compensation
Congrats on making it to YC 19!

Love the idea, in fact I started something similar[1] in March 2018 when I was switching job. I also heard too many stories of friends accepting early stage companies offers with little to no equity and I was hurting for them.

I hope we (employees) will finally get our leverage back and fight for better equity but ALSO better liquidity!

If founders get liquidity, employees should too, it's only fair.

Right now we don't verify beyond verifying your email address that it comes from a corporate domain. In the future I plan on adding features such as referrals which will need a stronger verification process.

Interested to know the actual % they are taking for $150k...

geoffreyy··on Think about Equity
I think more and more people know about equity. We should focus on making that said equity more liquid for private companies.

So many founders get rich early by selling their stocks to investors when raising money. Most of the time, employees just can't because the board won't let them.

If we allow employees to sell their stocks after they are vested you reduce the amount of risk they take when accepting a lower salary for higher equity. It would also stop the mentality of considering equity as zero when evaluating offers and give more financial flexibility to employees.

There is so much money circulating in private markets, but employees just can't access it. This seems pretty unfair to me.

geoffreyy··on Apple HomePod – The Audiophile Perspective and Measurements
I am a bit surprised, having received mine last Friday, I was very disappointed by the sound quality but even more with the actual features themselves. Of course this is highly subjective but I will keep my two Sonos Play:1 stereo and return the HomePod. I just wish Sonos Play:1 had a line-in or/and bluetooth connectivity...

geoffreyy··on Options vs. Cash
Would making secondary market accessible to employees after a cliff - i.e. 2 years - solve this issue of "lottery tickets" we hear all the time?

If we let employees access liquidity events by having the board organizing restricted secondary sales every year, then their options will have a higher probability to have real value?

After all, VCs have lot less risk than employees... We can't diversify our portfolio like they can. They want to invest their money, we want liquidity. Giving us financial flexibility would have only pros IMO and would be a powerful recruiting tool as well.

At my current company, I pushed a lot for employees to get 10yr exercise window extension, which we now have. Now we need to push to get liquidity. I feel like it is our responsibility as employees to keep things moving for a fairer future.

We help adding value to the company, I think it will be fair to be able to sell our options even if the company is still private.

There are also companies like Equity Zen [1] that help giving employees liquidity. I wonder if that is a good alternative too?

Basically if we can unlock the value of options before an exit, options stop being lottery tickets and everyone is happy.

The first page of that tutorial reminded me of a product I saw at the Apple store a few weeks ago called Roli. They have a great app [0], but the hardware [1] itself is not ideal but unfortunately necessary to unlock some features... I will be waiting for a v2...

You could also use ZenHub [1].

It is a powerful extension that add project management features directly inside GitHub.

You would enjoy Task boards, Burndown charts and many other features without leaving GitHub's website.

Very nicely done, bookmarked!

My imagination would have called it Constellations to refer as stars identified and grouped by tags :p but Astral is pretty cool and shorter =D
