geodel··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
Coincidently I was thinking about car wash just few days back, One was bought in 2014, never car washed seems fine so far. Another was bought in 2022 again no wash so far and no plan to.

I used to think everyone does it, I will do at some point but that point never came. Inside we vacuum and wipe every few months. Washed mats once in an year or so but car body wash rain takes care of it.

geodel··on Rate limits on GitLab.com are changing
Dunno, for folks around here, Claude is important, Gitlab is important and banal press release is important. So all of them together makes it obviously important.
geodel··on ER visits for gambling disorders doubled after expanded online gambling market
Hmm, I was expecting it would halve, once gamblers get their fill.
geodel··on Gemini 3.8 Live and 3.8 Live Extended Thinking
Google did it AlphaGo, AlphaFold etc for bragging rights, now let frontier lab do their thing.

It would be utter stupidity if they keep competing with hyper agile frontier labs. They sensibly moving to big infra provider and that's good niche.

Perhaps cloud business is also a thing which is making big revenue

geodel··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
Well, if this small fee can help brilliant folks to explore their horizons outside US, it would be all worth in end.
geodel··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
Yeah, it is not much worth because issue is not that top talent on H1 matches local talent but how average is the rest but get brought to US in name of high skill immigration.

The debate by supporters is set like: Look at these 5 top guys they are best in class in every aspect so why shouldn't they be here. And now don't look over there 500 guys which are business analyst, basic enterprise coders, testers application support engineers lest question maybe asked how come they are considered highly skilled.

geodel··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
I mean Canada has jumped so many times in last 8-10 years with these express residencies, hiring H1B laid off workers, grabbing people who are stuck with travel restrictions to US I'd have thought they be half way to the moon.

In any case I wish well to people in Canada and Europe and people who are looking to move there. More spreaded opportunities lead to better outcome for everyone including US even if it does not look like one.

geodel··on Amazon pilots ad services in ChatGPT
Well, even payment is no guarantee that ads won't be injected into service. even these fucking movie theaters sho like 20-30 min of ads before showing movie people paid for.
geodel··on Amazon pilots ad services in ChatGPT
Yes, there are enough people who still think this won't happen despite very conclusive recent history of this exactly happening.

Just like there are enough people who think if there were no car dealership/ salesman car would become cheaper as if car makers are full of morons who leave extra margins to buyers instead of themselves.

Or streaming service beats the shit of out cable in being cheap, ads-free and all in all better user experience. Once true, no longer.

Also funny that tips will go away when one visits self-serve in restaurants, coffee shops etc.

I guess a lot of folks are too drunk on "This time it will be different".

geodel··on Amazon pilots ad services in ChatGPT
Well they are being generous giving you extra 15 min video streaming which cost a lot to produce for free in a 45min show.

Soon, one need to be tipping advertising producing partners for their hard work.

geodel··on Rust is tier-1 language at Microsoft
But Tier-1 app consuming Tier-1 RAM seems officially approved.
geodel··on I'm sorry, you're not going to die from an AI-engineered supervirus
Well, this is disappointing.

Who wants bigger phones: Tens of millions in higher end market.

Who wants smaller phones: Tens of thousands in lower end market.

None of the European automotive company would be as profitable were it not the US market. I don't think Europeans are realizing that.

geodel··on Dutch central bank moves share of gold from U.S., Canada to London
> It is so important, that many countries make it illegal to hide international football matches behind paywalls, specifically.

Sports is peak diversion from real issues, Whether Europe, US or India and so on. The countries can go to hell, people can drown in endless real problems. But if people can be smothered with sport entertainment so they ignore real things whats better than that.

In India whole country can become absolute crap. Worst on any social, economic indicator but as long free cricket broadcast is on TV and mobile, life is good.

geodel··on No country for mediocre mathematicians
I'd just say there are scores of people who like programing. But that's about it.

geodel··on What Running Kafka on VMs Taught Us About Systems Thinking
Damn, I was at exactly same place when I closed tab and came back here. I just started reading, finding author pompous writing themselves in 3rd person.

I'd say it is crisis (of slop) and it is decision to keep generating slop nonetheless.

geodel··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
And now they can be more evenly distributed all over the world. I'd call it a net win even if administration did not think it this way.
geodel··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Huh, this is rather useless argument. People in US already how companies, sport teams extract exorbitant tax breaks to move or stay put in particular state/city etc and nonetheless still end up moving because someone offered even better incentives. The jobs that are moving will not stay here for long even if all hurdles removed for immigration.
geodel··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Well, others can bent in other direction and boost their economy by taking in all immigrants that were US bound.
geodel··on AWS Acquires DuckLabs
Never. When it comes to me I am just a poor hustler, surviving a s/w job to make ends meet. When it comes to open source I am gonna hold those guys to highest standard, code, github behavior, tweets, everything must live up to best human ideals.

So give your tools, your life, free bug fixing, priority attention to me because I am getting my paid job done. Why they need money anyway, they can leave on reputation of OSS contributors. Also not to forget I donated 5 dollars last year so now give me full certified audit of your finances of last 5 years.

Just like press freedom is for those who own press, nice things are for those who can buy nice things.
geodel··on How I find problems to solve as a staff engineer
All items true. I dug my own grave by telling management look, we can already do all new features by reusing same system at much less expense.
geodel··on How I find problems to solve as a staff engineer
> Especially if management rotates and new management didn't actually create the success in the first place.

Critical point, and absolutely true in my case. With change in management all past successful projects are "failures" now. Instead of using x, y, z projects uses a, b, c so leadership is kind to dismiss me with prejudice.

geodel··on How I find problems to solve as a staff engineer
Agree. It is to author's credit that he shows self awareness about this kind of autonomy and privilege.
geodel··on How I find problems to solve as a staff engineer
This sounds about right. At least I feel it acutely in my career. And the more experienced I got instead of more autonomy it has decreased. So to me it seems autonomy is decreasing at a rather fast clip.

Even outside projects and general work condition it is worse. 10 years back I could just decide when to work from home, or do a few interesting projects show to managers get approval afterwards. Today I have to explain myself to managers and get proper approvals for same thing. And I have been in same place for quite some time so it is not even the case that I have to prove to my new employers first.

Being not much ambitious I use to think after these many years and multiple successful project my win is to be a kind of made guy in that same mid-level position. Supporting , fixing project which I delivered over years and just take it easy, start day late, leave early until retirement.

Turns out things I assumed, don't exist. And even if they do they are above my level. Not worked in big tech, no massive RSU based compensation and with AI flattening difference (in employer's view ) between 2 vs 20 years of experience, story is not going to end great for people like me.
