geodel··on How Singapore's government-run dating service works
I mean there is lot of research behind this. I read a book also by a guy who was founder of eHarmony or some similar portal, and this 5% statistic match real data from their site. Individual success stories are not replacement for hard statistical facts.
geodel··on You are no longer invited to dinner
Indeed. The way it worked for me if its at home, I am fine with cost of grocery and some drinks, it wasn't that much for me and cooking is fun. On the other hand if party is in restaurant / bar I bailed because cost is too much whether its each paid for their food and drinks or total cost divided by number of people.
geodel··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
I went thru the thread and I agree with you. Though I am from very different background your examples feel very familiar to me. Meeting some one after phone call/ text create different level of expectation where both parties are more intentional in meeting. Where as going unannounced create far less expectations on either side. Not meet at all as someone is not home, meet for short time as they are heading out soon, have long afternoon gossiping, chatting as it turns out they also had nothing to do in particular that afternoon.
geodel··on You are no longer invited to dinner
Oh, here come Judge Judgerson McJudge with their authoritative definition of shitty parents.

People who have means sometimes are not able to see other people's contraints.

geodel··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
Yeah, pretty much. Seems now dinner party means it has to be some kind of gala event.
geodel··on Cf: The Agentic CLI for the Cloudflare API
I mean it is the reason they would like to give. Should we accept it though as their core motivation vis-a-vis it is most convenient and low effort for them so they will do it.
geodel··on Cf: The Agentic CLI for the Cloudflare API
No it is exactly right mode for modern tech companies:

1) If it runs on my dime and my infrastructure I will optimize the hell out using most cleverly written Rust and what not and gloat about engineering prowess.

2) If it runs on users computers well then, we have carefully evaluated our strategic direction and come to conclusion that JS/TS/Electron option is the best way to go.

geodel··on The smart home graveyard is getting crowded
Agree. At this point it should be dumbass cloud connected device with potential to stuff ads in my eyes and ears.
geodel··on Topcoat is pushing the boundary of server applications with Rust
Well, Rust is great for Fearless AI-driven development.
geodel··on Aging may be a program, not a breakdown
I wonder what Cao would've done once he learned that his great-grandparents are already gone. Perhaps at that point nothing less than time machine invention will do.
geodel··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
> The problem imo is the slow deterioration of institutional knowledge that offloading the mental task of wisdom gathering to AI is causing.

That's the whole point of Global managerial class even without AI. The idea is just by creating metrics one can measure how teams, groups, organization and whole industries are performing.

Before the current AI complex the previous one Agile Industry Complex One can see we starting producing 10x more code, 50x more JIRAs resolved, 100x more network bandwidth used. All these metrics tremendous gain in productivity.

Also it may not have been seen in US but in many places a change in political regime does want to burn down previously collected institutional knowledge because new dispensation have their own idea about what is knowledge, who will preserve it and how it will be preserved.

geodel··on Amazon blocks Meta’s new Muse AI agent from shopping on amazon.com
> You don't think you're getting off that easily, do you?

Agreed. But that's where Amazon needs some thrashing from users, competitors and regulators to start with.

geodel··on M5 Ultra Mac Studio Review
> Do you need a frontier model to write emails, check your calendar, search the web?

How about writing mail to President and senators on AI doomsday scenario if frontier labs do not pace themselves?

That mini model on mac mini would scared to hell to do such thing. It need that rugged frontier model to speak truth to power.

geodel··on Amazon blocks Meta’s new Muse AI agent from shopping on amazon.com
There was internal JIRA ticket to rename Rufus -> Doofus as to dramatically improve performance and sentiment among shoppers on Amazon site.

We should see this improved version soon.

geodel··on Amazon blocks Meta’s new Muse AI agent from shopping on amazon.com
Thank you Amazon for standing up for everyman Rufus. We don't need AI agent from evil ad giants.
geodel··on M5 Ultra Mac Studio Review: The Dream Mac for Local AI Agents
> how expensive using a Mac Mini as an alternative is?

I think it goes without saying. And it is eminently evident over last couple of decades that from compute to storage to meals 3rd part providers have saved billions upon billions of dollars to enterprises and individuals alike by providing these essential services.

geodel··on M5 Ultra Mac Studio Review: The Dream Mac for Local AI Agents
Yes, it feels like that. Whereas frontier labs are pushing the frontier of human knowledge, selflessly working towards pulling humanity from dark ages. Ignorant peasants trying to burn the modern civilization down. Don't they know data centers and fiber lines are lifeline of modern economy?
geodel··on M5 Ultra Mac Studio Review
Agreed.

Specially since one can pay half right now to OpenAI and sign a 12 year iron clad contract for uninterrupted service delivery of OpenAI Pro.

geodel··on Astra for Law
Yep, just yesterday, Nike removed one leach middlemen called retailers and sell directly through their app. Turns out working out very well for them too.
geodel··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
Coincidently I was thinking about car wash just few days back, One was bought in 2014, never car washed seems fine so far. Another was bought in 2022 again no wash so far and no plan to.

I used to think everyone does it, I will do at some point but that point never came. Inside we vacuum and wipe every few months. Washed mats once in an year or so but car body wash rain takes care of it.

geodel··on Rate limits on GitLab.com are changing
Dunno, for folks around here, Claude is important, Gitlab is important and banal press release is important. So all of them together makes it obviously important.
geodel··on ER visits for gambling disorders doubled after expanded online gambling market
Hmm, I was expecting it would halve, once gamblers get their fill.
geodel··on Gemini 3.8 Live and 3.8 Live Extended Thinking
Google did it AlphaGo, AlphaFold etc for bragging rights, now let frontier lab do their thing.

It would be utter stupidity if they keep competing with hyper agile frontier labs. They sensibly moving to big infra provider and that's good niche.

> .. perhaps if it's not helping sell ads,

Perhaps cloud business is also a thing which is making big revenue

geodel··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
Well, if this small fee can help brilliant folks to explore their horizons outside US, it would be all worth in end.
geodel··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
Yeah, it is not much worth because issue is not that top talent on H1 matches local talent but how average is the rest but get brought to US in name of high skill immigration.

The debate by supporters is set like: Look at these 5 top guys they are best in class in every aspect so why shouldn't they be here. And now don't look over there 500 guys which are business analyst, basic enterprise coders, testers application support engineers lest question maybe asked how come they are considered highly skilled.

geodel··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
I mean Canada has jumped so many times in last 8-10 years with these express residencies, hiring H1B laid off workers, grabbing people who are stuck with travel restrictions to US I'd have thought they be half way to the moon.

In any case I wish well to people in Canada and Europe and people who are looking to move there. More spreaded opportunities lead to better outcome for everyone including US even if it does not look like one.

geodel··on Amazon pilots ad services in ChatGPT
Well, even payment is no guarantee that ads won't be injected into service. even these fucking movie theaters sho like 20-30 min of ads before showing movie people paid for.
geodel··on Amazon pilots ad services in ChatGPT
Yes, there are enough people who still think this won't happen despite very conclusive recent history of this exactly happening.

Just like there are enough people who think if there were no car dealership/ salesman car would become cheaper as if car makers are full of morons who leave extra margins to buyers instead of themselves.

Or streaming service beats the shit of out cable in being cheap, ads-free and all in all better user experience. Once true, no longer.

Also funny that tips will go away when one visits self-serve in restaurants, coffee shops etc.

I guess a lot of folks are too drunk on "This time it will be different".

geodel··on Amazon pilots ad services in ChatGPT
Well they are being generous giving you extra 15 min video streaming which cost a lot to produce for free in a 45min show.

Soon, one need to be tipping advertising producing partners for their hard work.

geodel··on Rust is tier-1 language at Microsoft
But Tier-1 app consuming Tier-1 RAM seems officially approved.
