genter··on BMW Spider-Man in-car advertising
They're also really nice to drive (at least when they work).
genter··on Electric motors with no rare earths
I've probably taken apart 10 automotive alternators. Every single one had brushes.
genter··on Car headlights don't have to be this blinding
I dunno, I think all manufacturers are at fault. Even the ones that are properly aligned are ridiculously bright, but aimed down. Which is fine if two vehicles approach each other on flat ground. But if two vehicles approach the crest of a hill, then the headlight that was aimed down is now aimed straight at the other driver.

And don't get me started on jackasses that put LED bulbs in old halogen housings.

genter··on New York’s budget bill would require “blocking technology” on all 3D printers
A CNC mill that's worth the cast iron it's made from weighs at least 2000 lbs, not to mention it takes a lot of skill to use (workholding, toolholding, setting up feeds and speeds, coolant, etc). It's very easy and very expensive to crash if you don't know what you're doing. A g-code program has to be modified to fit your machine, where the origin is, the dimensions of your rough stock, what tools it expects to have, how much material your machine can hog off.

In contrast, a pretty good 3d printer costs $500, can sit on a table, and the inevitable mistakes you will make while learning how to use it are comparatively cheap.

genter··on Apple-1 Computer Prototype Board #0 sold for $2.75M
Makes sense, I take for granted how great modern electrolytic caps are compared to 50 years ago.
genter··on Apple-1 Computer Prototype Board #0 sold for $2.75M
WTF is a "computer-rated" capacitor?
genter··on The 600-year-old origins of the word 'hello'
Forgot about that. So about a 100% chance my dad got it from that.
genter··on The 600-year-old origins of the word 'hello'
I remember my dad saying "yello" in the 90's, here in Northern California. Pretty sure he just said it because he found it amusing.
genter··on Most renters shut out of energy-saving upgrades – study
Except a lot of renters (including this one) pay their own utilities.
genter··on ‘Fuck you, make me’ without saying the words
Counteroffer: the App Store and the Play Store will be used for the precise reason they were built, making their owners a shit-ton of money.
genter··on Gnome and Mozilla Discuss Proposal to Disable Middle Mouse Paste on Linux
Mixed opinions on this. More than once I've accidentally middle clicked on a text box and sent the contents to some server. Or middle clicking the new tab button will navigate to whatever is in your clipboard, or do a web search if it isn't a URL. Hasn't been anything confidential yet, but it is possible. I try to clear the clipboard asap for this very reason.
genter··on US seizes oil tanker off coast of Venezuela
Don't worry, a significant portion of us in the US are also utterly confused in regards to whats going on with the federal government.
genter··on Coca Cola has an executive dedicated to McDonald's
I'm sure they mess around with it, they'll just never announce it.
genter··on Lobsters Interview
You don't need an account to lurk.
genter··on Stellantis Is Spamming Owners' Screens with Pop-Up Ads for New Car Discounts
Yeah, it's not as if Mercedes (who made the vehicle he's talking about) or BMW are German.
genter··on Stellantis Is Spamming Owners' Screens with Pop-Up Ads for New Car Discounts
The screen doesn't have to be obnoxious like this, though. A Chevy van has a small screen embedded in the rear view mirror, which is impossible to see when not in reverse.
genter··on What they don't tell you about maintaining an open source project
I agree, but you might want to practice what you preach.
genter··on X begins rolling out 'About this account' location feature to users' profiles

genter··on Loose wire leads to blackout, contact with Francis Scott Key bridge
But it's important to "punish" (via punitive fines) the right people, so that they will put some effort into not making that mistake again.
genter··on I think nobody wants AI in Firefox, Mozilla
I'm not opposed to activism, I'm just opposed to their activism which goes against what the Mozilla Foundation stands for. Obviously what I think the foundation stands for (a freely accessible web) and what it actually stands for are two different things, but I like my rose tinted glasses.
genter··on Tesla Is Recalling Cybertrucks Again
Windshields themselves are glued into the frame, and have been for years. They are a major part of the structure of the vehicle, as well as an important safety device, and there isn't a problem with them comining loose. Badges are attached with double sided tape, but obviously those are a lot smaller than a light bar.
genter··on Toucan Wireless Split Keyboard with Touchpad
Yes. Although the keyboard is decent, until you get a grain of salt under a key.

The durability is mediocre, and repairability is only better than an iPhone.

genter··on Mislabeled wires responsible for two-day IT outage in South Dakota; officials
I realize that this is being translated from technical speak to layperson by someone that doesn't know anything, but sounds like a multimeter would've been useful.

I wonder if they got their phases swapped, so when they turned on the breaker, they shorted the opposite phases together. That would probably require a new breaker (as well as clean underwear for anyone near by).

genter··on I was right about dishwasher pods and now I can prove it [video]
For water heaters and wall furnaces with a gas control valve, yes. For old stoves, they don't.
genter··on When O3 is 2x slower than O2
Not OP, but I'm on a 10 year old laptop.

Only thing I'd want is a higher resolution display that's usable in daylight, and longer battery life.

genter··on YouTube is taking down videos on performing nonstandard Windows 11 installs
Be sure that it's not connected to the internet while installing. Otherwise it will install updates and turn it into a normal install.
genter··on Why do some radio towers blink?
I was told that you want lights on all 3 phases so that you can see spinning things spin. If the lights are on single phase, they will dim 120 times a second, and the strobe effect can cause spinning things to appear stationary. With 3 phase, at least 1/3 of the lights are lit all the time.
genter··on Trump pardons convicted Binance founder
Yes.

(And I say that as a Democrat in California)

genter··on Tesla Recalls Almost 13,000 EVs over Risk of Battery Power Loss
Because all of the IC's that are attached to the battery are designed for 12V. Things like solid state relays (BTS7008 for exammple) and the 5/3.3 volt regulators.
genter··on Post office in France rolls out croissant-scented stamp
Better than the time that a utility company mailed out a gas-scented flyer to teach people what a gas leak smelled like. 911 was inundated with gas leak calls.

(Search is so fucking useless these days that I can't find anything about it, but pretty sure it was in New York.)
