genghizkhan··on Show HN: Restfox – Open source lightweight alternative to Postman
> curl is not installed by default in many distros

Which ones (apart from alpine)? I thought curl was pretty much as basic as it got and is always there.

genghizkhan··on USDA ignoring the science on low-carb diets
Not enough fibre.
genghizkhan··on NixOS on Btrfs+tmpfs
I've never tried Ubuntu, but zfs has been rock solid on Fedora, Arch and Debian for me. Whatever the issue that hit you was, I hope recent versions of Ubuntu/zfs have fixed it.
genghizkhan··on NixOS on Btrfs+tmpfs
I would prefer to do this on zfs, for which there is a lovely installation guide on the openzfs docs site.

genghizkhan··on Debian and firmware
Debian already maintains these images and has non-free firmware packages. They're just not enabled on the main installation disc by default. You can get non-free Debian images, they're just harder to get to.

Edit: Here we go. They're "unoffical" images for sure, but they seem to be maintained similarly to the official ones. https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-in...

genghizkhan··on The chicken you are eating has increased 364% in size over the last 50 years
I'm no expert, but my assumption for both is more liberal antibiotic use and the quality of the feedstock. Free ranging chickens (in my experience) taste better than battery-farmed ones. I don't think the chicken KFC buys is free-ranging. As for your second point, antibiotics are often used to get chickens fatter than they can get naturally within a very short timeframe. This publication[1] (from 2018) goes into some detail about the entire practice.

genghizkhan··on Castes in India: Their Mechanism, Genesis and Development
Not the GP, but I can anecdotally confirm this. Breaking caste barriers remains unusual in most of India. The Indian HN community is biased towards Bangalore, Delhi and Bombay where rates of exogamy amongst the upper middle class are far higher than in practically all other parts of India.
genghizkhan··on I Am Seriously Considering Going Back to Desktop Computers (2020)
I’ve personally switched to using acme.sh over certbot. Much easier to setup (since it’s just a bash script) and supports practically every DNS API.
genghizkhan··on I Am Seriously Considering Going Back to Desktop Computers (2020)
Certbot (and other acme clients such as acme.sh) are practically set and forget. I’ve never once had to touch those configs again once they were made ~4 years ago.
genghizkhan··on When Mongols Set Out to Conquer the World, There Was One Limiting Factor: Grass
Their response was about how it wasn’t the secret to mongol success specifically. The mongols had the double recurved bow and the advantage of a fully nomadic pastoral society in which all adult males were trained to be warriors. That and Genghis Khan’s decimal system is what transformed them into a fearsome conquering machine.
genghizkhan··on What are you doing, WordPress.com?
It's much harder to get email subscriptions going on Hugo as compared to WP. Ghost might be a better option, I feel.
genghizkhan··on WireGuard DNS Configuration for Systemd
$ networkctl down wg0

$ networkctl up wg0

I’d you’ve changed the WireGuard config then:

$ systemctl reload systemd-networkd

genghizkhan··on Apple Mac Studio
Because most people don't (and probably can't) do this. The best option for most people is to simply have more local storage so that they never run out.
genghizkhan··on Raid-Z Expansion Feature for ZFS Goes Live
Synology deploys btrfs on top of md-raid. They do not trust btrfs's raid layer.
genghizkhan··on Linux: Massive I/O usage from btrfs-cleaner after upgrading to 5.16
Btrfs increasingly feels like the filesystem that called "Wolf".
genghizkhan··on Why can’t I play Ultra HD Blu-ray movies on my new Intel CPU platform?
To rewatch Lord of the Rings? I think not.
genghizkhan··on Covid-19 may have killed nearly 3M in India, far more than official counts show
The situation is far worse in smaller towns and cities in places like Bihar and UP. I remember hearing stories during the second wave (some of which I was able to confirm) about doctors not telling family members that their loved ones had passed away so as to be able to keep charging the family for continued hospital care. The loss of trust in the medical profession is very real.
genghizkhan··on Waiting for apt locks without hacky Bash scripts
Might be a dumb question, but would systemd not be able to do this? Do your boxes not run systemd?
genghizkhan··on Leaving the Apple ecosystem behind
Why not try out WSL? I'm not a dev myself, but for the bit of coding and scripting I do from time to time WSL is pretty good.
genghizkhan··on OpenSSL 3.0 Has Been Released
A lot of distros migrated away from libressl (gentoo, alpine and void, iirc) because libressl is also not a drop-in replacement for openssl 1.1.x, or at least wasn't in 2020. The situation is not expected to change.
genghizkhan··on Google engineer who criticized company in viral comics on why he finally quit
That's unfair. Twitter does have a huge impact on a lot of people. Twitter banning Donald Trump was a huge deal, for example. He has a smaller platform now and (imo) the world is a better place for it. The Earth wouldn't stop rotating on its axis if Twitter were to shut down, I'll give you that, but business as usual would change for a lot of people.
genghizkhan··on Show HN: Obsidian for Mobile – Plain-text knowledge base on the go
Yup. It's called Outliner.
genghizkhan··on Show HN: Obsidian for Mobile – Plain-text knowledge base on the go
I've absolutely been loving Obsidian since I started using it, which was only 3 months or so ago. But the plugin ecosystem has well and truly hooked me in. It's brilliant that they have a mobile app now, I can easily use it as an inbox/dump now.

The features I'm waiting for (I know they're in development) are the WYSIWYG editor and hopefully some integration with dynalist, the other amazing app from this team. Once that's done and dusted, this will be awesome.

genghizkhan··on Compiling Rust is NP-hard
Compiling paru, an AUR helper for Arch Linux, on the other hand, takes me around 3 - 4 minutes on a 4C/8T i5 for an optimised build. I think Rust compile times might just fall within a narrow range.
genghizkhan··on I work in DOS for a day (2014)
If you're okay compiling your own kernel I'd wager you could get by on around 30 odd megabytes using the Alpine base image (5MB userland and the rest kernel), though it would not be sufficient to do any compilation on its own.
genghizkhan··on PHP isn't that like bad?
I've seen Go be used for a lot of webapps now. It ought to be acknowledged that Go may end up being the future of many SaaS projects.
genghizkhan··on Chimera Linux: a Linux distribution based on FreeBSD userland and LLVM
I use the Alpine userland and so totally understand the reasoning of having less bloated tooling and the like. However, personally I prefer to apply this philosophy to stuff I have running in the background. If I'm using initscripts, I'd rather they be written using execline (and ideally running with s6) rather than bash, if it has to be a version of sh then I prefer dash over bash, builtins over external tools, nginx over apache, and so on.

But having used busybox utils on a daily basis I truly do not understand how people can use them daily and not go insane. The GNU utils are so much faster and more feature-filled. To me, reducing bloat makes sense for something running forever in the background. Interactive stuff ought to be as feature-filled as possible, stuff in the background as lean it can.

I realise others have different views about this, but I think I hew fairly closely to the mainstream thought about bloat.

genghizkhan··on Chimera Linux: a Linux distribution based on FreeBSD userland and LLVM
GNU tools are GPL-licensed, and there's a certain contingent of folks who do not want their userland polluted with GPL-licensed tooling.

I'm not saying I like or understand this, but I have seen this attitude among a few in the community.

genghizkhan··on Migadu – No-nonsense multi-domain email at a flat price
I'll go out on a limb to defend jarland (the admin of mxroute) and say I genuinely don't think it only means 3 - 4 years here. And even if it does, $50 (or even $150) for a 3 - 4 year service is pretty darn awesome.
genghizkhan··on Hackers exploited 0-day, not 2018 bug, to mass-wipe My Book Live devices
There exists a physical reset pinhole button on these devices.
