gengelbro··on FAA approves hundreds more engines to use unleaded avgas
Great news! If we could then get a decibel limit on the planes than essentially all my hangups with amateur aviation are resolved.
gengelbro··on The Methods of Moral Panic Journalism
The author apparently defines 'moral panic' as any negative press attention on a social movement they personally approve of.
gengelbro··on Leaded fuel reduced IQ of children born before 1990
I've seen this asserted elsewhere, but I'm wondering what evidence exists that flight hours on leaded planes are _predominately_ due to student pilots?
gengelbro··on Leaded fuel reduced IQ of children born before 1990
We're near a small airport and I think of this every time they fly over (which is quite frequently).

Essentially hobby aviation is completely stuck in the 1970s and getting the engines modernized would be "cost prohibitive".

Since wealthy people still want to play around in planes they get to rain lead on our heads.

gengelbro··on Extreme heat is broiling people in developing cities – Science – AAAS
Is "broiling" a scientific term?
gengelbro··on Why “Trusting the Science” Is Complicated
If you think of them as roughly interchangeable apparatuses then it starts to make a whole lot of sense in my opinion.
gengelbro··on 2MW Electric Aircraft Engine
Seems they're ignoring the weight of the fuel/batteries.
gengelbro··on How the Taliban Overran the Afghan Army, Built by the U.S. over 20 Years
> Israel, WTF, Israel is the master nation of US...

Seriously please take this somewhere else.

gengelbro··on The American diversity meat grinder
I was told, directly to my face by the hiring manager after presumably doing well during a FANG interview:

"Why does it always have to be a white guy with a beard".

I did take the job, but I've reflected on that moment once in a while.

gengelbro··on YouTube suspends Rand Paul for seven days
Do you hear yourself calling for muzzles to be put on people?
gengelbro··on Fundamentals of Incident Management
It's not inspiring to me with the 'cool tactical' framing this article attempts to convey.

I've worked as an oncall for a fundamental backbone service of the internet in the past and paged into middle of the night outages. It's harrowing and exhausting. Cool names like 'incident commander' do not change this.

We also had a "see ya in the morning" culture. Instead I'd be much more impressed to have a "see ya in the afternoon, get some sleep" culture.

gengelbro··on SpaceX installed 29 Raptor engines on a Super Heavy rocket last night
I guess you haven't been reading the room lately. In the modern retelling, the explorers that found the "New World" produced only net negatives and we'd have been all much better off had they stayed in western europe.
gengelbro··on Tesla 2Q 2021 Quarterly Result
Not knocking the comment, but the phrase is "for all intents and purposes" fyi.
gengelbro··on Benzene detected in many sunscreen products
Not universally, here in Colorado it's 20/80 with/without.
gengelbro··on Barry Diller says cryptocurrencies are a 'con'
I live near a small airport with a lot of air traffic fueled by tetraethyl lead (avgas). So it seems society hasn't really caught up if it's a rich person's hobby.
gengelbro··on A Guide to Color from 1692
Recently read: "Secret Lives Of Colour" by Kassia St Clair which was very interesting from a historical perspective. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the old chemical engineering (vats of vinegar, urine, lead, etc).
gengelbro··on He spent 10 days in jail after facial recognition led to arrest of the wrong man
How many people have been arrested historically with just a plain ol' case of mistaken identity (i.e. they just looked alike).

Seems like we'd need to know the ambient rate to tell if we're really regressing.

gengelbro··on Questions that changed my life (2016)
This is also what came to my mind when reading this article. Not everyone is capable of pivoting their life because of dependents and other inflexible obligations.

I've dubbed articles and advice like this as "manic pixey tech guy" syndrome.

gengelbro··on Coyotes Poised to Infiltrate South America
Did you read the list of fatal dog attacks? I toolk a cursory look came to exactly the opposite conclusion as the second avma.org link did, which seemed to be engaged in mental gymnastics.
gengelbro··on Alcohol breath tests are often unreliable
Recently spent a night in jail after having a single solitary drink. I suspect (blood results outstanding) that the officer misread .019 for 0.19, which is staggeringly high for a single drink, perhaps impossible.

Having that experience has completely collapsed my faith in the justice system and worst yet, it has taken more than a month for the results and I'm still waiting. My only mistake was being honest with the officer and offering that I had had a single drink an hour before.
