generalpf··on Show HN: InvoicingAPI is finally ready
FreshBooks has a similar API but different pricing and far more features. Payments integrated too.
generalpf··on Orbit Is Joining Postman
Postman makes sense because of the HTTP method POST, but I don’t know about Orbit.
generalpf··on Write code for the web
You dropped this: /s
generalpf··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
Likewise.
generalpf··on Show HN: A map that tells you if a NYC cafe has WiFi, a restroom, and an outlet
This would be really useful for the homeless. Nice job!
generalpf··on Brian Bucklew Porting Caves of Qud from Unity to Godot
He didn’t finish, he’s still porting it.
generalpf··on Threads.net Can Go to Hell
>In more than one way, the users of Threads lose from my non-participation.

Wow, this guy…

generalpf··on I don't know how I feel about email
Not sure where you live but in Canada and the USA the phone companies legally have to allow you to port your existing number over from one company to another.
generalpf··on Google Sidewiki
This is what RapGenius (now called Genius) was trying to do. They gave it up though.

generalpf··on HBO Max new Captcha system
No, they don't, you can manually ask for a one-time reset of your ratings before you do a major update. They could have done it here.
generalpf··on Why I Left Rust
This person claims to be one of the individuals. https://pony.social/@sgrif@hachyderm.io/110447363468527189
generalpf··on I Fired Myself
You didn't fire yourself, you quit.
generalpf··on Thoughts on Swift and Objective-C (2022)
*Chris Lattner
generalpf··on Programming isn’t coding (2020)
Clickbait if I’ve ever seen it.
generalpf··on Meta plans to cut thousands of jobs, after CEO predicted no more layoffs
Not all engagement is equal to Facebook. At one point they considered the angry reaction to be worth twice as much as the happy reaction when deciding if a story should be ranked up.
generalpf··on Amazon employees push CEO Andy Jassy to drop return-to-office mandate
I worked for a mid-cap tech company that brought in Amazon and Salesforce senior leadership in 2021. The culture immediately eroded as these guys’ penchant for finger-pointing and hustling beyond a reasonable human’s capacity became clear.
generalpf··on How to store your app's entire state in the url
I remember when WebSphere Portal Server used to do this, and the URL would exceed 4096 characters, which was the limit that IE 6 (?) would support, breaking the entire site.
generalpf··on O Holy Crap
A worm gear! It is indeed designed to take the fall so the entire machine doesn't shred itself.

I bought an official replacement from KitchenAid for $12 including shipping.

generalpf··on Issue dialing 911 on Google Pixel 6 cell phones
Oh, you know the ones.
generalpf··on Beyond Meat Is Struggling, and the Plant-Based Meat Industry Worries
If you’d been a vegetarian for 30 years, your evaluation that it tasted like “the real thing” is very suspect.
generalpf··on FTX to file for U.S. bankruptcy, CEO resigns
Rust has use cases.
generalpf··on Apple’s App Review Fix Fails to Placate Developers
I lost track of the number of times we got rejected for our app because the reviewer's Internet connection was down. "Can't log in, getting no connection to server error." Yeah dude, you need to connect to the Internet first.

One of the dumbest reasons I saw for being rejected was that our app's "invite a user by email" functionality (which only sends an email, nothing more) was mistaken for account creation and they wanted a cut of revenue.

generalpf··on Uvalde school district suspends entire police force
Is this an American thing? Why does a school district have a police force?
generalpf··on Mastodon.technology Shutdown
SmugMug bought Flickr quite some time ago.

generalpf··on Ask HN: Xcode users – how do you make it more usable?
Under Preferences > Locations you can make DerivedData relative to each project and I recommend you do that so different apps you work on don’t force you to wipe all the artifacts from all apps when you clean it manually.

As for removing old simulators after you remove an old Xcode, run

$ xcrun simctl delete unavailable

generalpf··on I Love My PinePhone
That’s pretty easy.
generalpf··on Tell HN: Salesforce has globally revoked Slack's holiday shutdown benefit
Keep in mind that a lot of Slack’s employees —- especially early ones —- are Canadian, and Canadians don’t get unlimited PTO (by law, I think). So they are being told when they should be using some of their PTO days.
generalpf··on I quit Android Development after 10 years and what I plan to do now
Not at all, I work at a well-known company that has Staff and Principal Engineers for iOS and Android as well as backend.
generalpf··on Writing one sentence per line
Is this what inspires LinkedIn engagement hackers?
generalpf··on Lessons learned from running Apache Airflow at scale
A lot of times this is used for data warehousing so product managers and otherwise can query the database of one app joined with another, especially in an environment with microservices. You might join a table containing orders with another table that was from a totally different DB, like payments, to find out which kinds of items are best to offer BNPL or something.

The author also mentions that it’s used for machine learning models which will ultimately feed back into Shopify’s front end, for instance.
