long life riddled with parasites or somewhat shorter life sans parasites. I feel like they would be cool with it
gehwartzen··on Daylight saving time can seriously affect your health
For me standard (9-5) work hours are dometimrd the problem. I can't do the same leisure things in an hour before work vs an hour after work because I still in the first I will have to go to work after so no drinking, getting high or relaxing without a thought of "work" coming up soon. As long as I can work earlier and leave earlier i'm good though. We just need more flexible work schedules in general.

lots of people have lunch at 2 or 3 in the afternoon and it does feel that way in the winter
gehwartzen··on Unavoidable future increase in West Antarctic ice-shelf melting over 21 century
I agree. And the solutions to all of those are very simple but entrenched interests in economic growth seem to be in the way. We should be championing the natural decline in birthrates and start planning for a new economy based on the changes that will bring.

Honestly I partially blame advertising in general. We are all constantly reminded that we should want more, that we never have enough, and are offered solutions to problems that we didn't view as problems to begin with putting us in constant competition with one another. I think we will end up happier overall when we stop pursuing consumer growth and start pursuing human connections realizing that the things most of us want are not produced in a factory or presentaed on a screen.

Whenever I think of Geo-Engineering I imagine someone getting into keeping reef aquariums, noticing some fish are looking less than healthy, testing and seeing chemical/physical properties of the tank are off, adjusting by adding/removing some chemical only to see everything die anyway, and then coming to the realization that maybe this hobby is a lot more nuanced then they imagined and isn’t for them.

Perhaps next time we’ll just get a freshwater planet, I hear those are much more forgiving ;)

gehwartzen··on Common fungus candida albicans might fuel Alzheimer's onset
I had a really bad bout of systemic c-diff causing colitis among other symptoms; and at one point I honestly felt like I was on deaths door. This occurred a few weeks after I was on antibiotics for something else. C-Diff is very resistant to antibiotics so if you kill off the other bacteria it outcompetes in ones system very quickly.

There have been a ton of articles and studies that show fecal transplants (FMT) from a healthy donor are one of the most effective ways to cure an overgrowth of c-diff. I couldn't get a doctors appointment at a specialist for weeks and was desperate so read the studies and methodologies in detail and did it myself. The key is finding a healthy donor. I decided my 8 you son would be perfect as he is super healthy and generally has the same diet as I do. I won't go into all the details but suffice to say the basics involves a mixer, sample, and enema which you then retain for as long as possible (2+ hours ideally).

It was the single most transformative medical treatment I have ever tried. Within a day or two symptoms were down I'd say 80% and within a week I was 100% better (which was confirmed a few weeks later when I finally got an appointment for blood testing and colonoscopy) Not only that I actually felt better than I had in years; consistent brain fog and ADHD symptoms alleviated as did some of my allergies. I was absolutely blown away.

I strongly believe this will eventually be viewed as a go to treatment for all kinds of neurological and other pathological diseases. I could imagine donor samples being further refined to increase or decrease specific micro-organisms contained to better target specific illnesses. There are several companies that have developed fecal transplants that are conducted via pill form in which the outside is sterilized in order to get rid of the ick factor.

>"It's entirely possible gut microbiome is a causative factor (even partial) in the obesity epidemic too. Everyone is obsessed with the CICO idea, but humans are not a blast calorimeter and the actual absorption, satiation, or metabolic paths all have obvious links to the gut microbiome (much more intuitive than the links to neurotransmitters)."

Absolutely. In fact as I was researching fecal transplants I came across a couple of interesting medical case studies in which obesity from the donor was passed to the recipient (which also underscores the importance of donor screening) [1]

gehwartzen··on Awareness at Death
You came out of nothing and you return to nothing.

Think about the last 13.8 billion years of your existence. Death is merely returning to that place. Was it uncomfortable or scary for “you” during those 13.8 billion years. Probably not. The “you” that has the capacity for worry, sadness, joy, etc. won’t exist after death.

And perhaps a new “you” will pop into existence out of nothing just as it did before. Or maybe not.

gehwartzen··on Log is the "Pro" in iPhone 15 Pro
I feel the same comparing my iphone and mirrorless. It's obvious software is years behind in almost every aspect; even relatively easy fixes like the horrible designed and unintuitive UI choices where the same mistakes are made year after year despite complaints...ugh! The last thing I need when taking pictures is fumbling around in 5 layers of menus to change important settings while my subject moves on and the moment has past. It almost feels on purpose as if the though is that added complexity is some proxy for it being "professional"

If processing power is one of the bottleneck to get some of the features phones can do it would be great if there was a universal hotshoe-like way to mount phones to camera bodies to use the screen, touch capabilities, and offload processing power, maybe with all phones now having USB-C its more of a possibility. If the camera makers don't do it I wouldn't be surprised if Apple/Google eventually do and eat their lunch.

gehwartzen··on Domestic cat larynges can produce purring frequencies without neural input
Thats how people have always explained making the rolling R sound for Spanish to me which is different from a rolling R sound in German. I was never able to make the Spanish r sound when I took it high school.

In the "guttural R" used in German the sound is made in the back of the throat without the need to press ones tongue against the roof of the mouth; just the base/root of the tongue against the uvular.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guttural_R

This video explains it well with really fascinating videos clips showing a cross section of the mouth live while speaking. The whole thing is interesting but the main difference is shown at 3:30

> What if a non-engineer who doesn’t understand the dangers makes this type of modification?

This hasn’t happened afaik in the last 15 years. I assume any non-engineer who doesn’t know the dangers also doesn’t have the technical know how to build this. Also the cost is several hundred thousand $.

History seems to indicate it’s a non-issue.

gehwartzen··on Domestic cat larynges can produce purring frequencies without neural input
My understanding is that cats purr both as an expression of happiness (like when petted) but also when sick, presumably for self comfort.

Both of my cats without fail will gravitate towards me or my gf when we are sick and sit on our chests and purr. it's very sweet.

I can produce a purring sounds in the very back of my throat but my gf can't no matter how much she tries/practices. I speak German natively and the purr is very similar to the sound of the letter "r" which I guess a lot of English speakers have trouble with.

gehwartzen··on Insurance companies fill their networks with ‘ghost’ therapists
I imagine the actual amount insurance pays out to the practice some amount less than 200$ per visit. Then there’s the overhead for staff having to submit claims and waiting 90+ days to get payed.
gehwartzen··on FTC sues Amazon for illegally maintaining monopoly power
Thats exactly what those are. I worked for Reynolds Consumer a while back and the same aluminum foil goes into the brand box as well as the private label box.
gehwartzen··on The Meaning of Liberalism (1938)
I mean in most economic theory ultimately the interests align with those who owns the means of production. In capitalism that is the individual (ideally) and in socialism it’s society (ideally) so not sure what’s wrong with GPs definition. The interest of those who own comes first in either case; that seems self evident.

gehwartzen··on Ask HN: Simple emergency phone for younger kids
yeah that's one of my biggest concerns; it has to fit into smaller kids pockets and holdable. I'll look into a cheap Nokia to get started.
gehwartzen··on Ask HN: Simple emergency phone for younger kids
Thats a great idea! His range would be about 1.5 miles (that's how far his moms house is from mine). Is that doable over radio?
gehwartzen··on Ask HN: Simple emergency phone for younger kids
Good point on starting with the cheapest option to start just to see his needs/capabilities, thanks!
gehwartzen··on Botulinum toxin: Bioweapon and magic drug (2010)
I've been thinking about doing this for a while. I grind and clench my teeth quite a bit at night. How often did you have to get it done? Did your insurance cover it or is this something you can use HSA money for? What's your cost per treatment?

Also does it in any way effect your chewing strength or ability to make the full range of facial expressions?

Many Thanks!

gehwartzen··on Beyond introvert vs. extrovert
I personally like having friends over but we all just kind of do our own thing\ sharing snacks. Having people in my space feels energizing and of course if there's something interesting on someone's mind we talk about it. But having to fill every minute with conversation to me is the draining part.

> This is also why noble titles can be extinguished — if nobody directly inherits a lump of political power, then there should no longer be a seat at the table for "the person who currently holds that lump of political power."

Isn’t this “lump of power” just monetary wealth, property, social connections etc? Why does it have to be passed onto a relative instead of any other individual the current power holder chooses?

gehwartzen··on Samsung considers moving to Bing as default search engine
Which is kind of depressing. I get public schools have budgetary needs and I suppose Chromebooks are perfectly appropriate for Elementary and (maybe) Middle Schoolers (my kid has one, he's in 2nd grade and its fine) but they should really consider supplying real laptops to the High Schoolers so they learn on hardware and software used in the real world.

gehwartzen··on Ivy League Schools Sure Look Like a Cartel
I follow college basketball a good bit and one interesting development is that the NCAA now allows student athletes to make money independently from scholarships (ie NIL name, image and likeness). Soon a lot of athletes (and programs) won’t require the schools funding for scholarships. Of course they will still fill up applicant spots
