gehwartzen··on Underrated Soft Skills: Charisma
I think charisma is just having a genuine interest in those around you. I don’t know how teachable that is but do think one can make a mental shift to hold that viewpoint
gehwartzen··on Tesla Stock Slumps as Chinese Rival Says Its Cars Can Charge in Just Five Minute

I honestly think one of the best things we could do for the planet’s climate long term is curbing consumer consumption and we were in no way heading in that direction before. Perhaps now we will be forced to. Less trans Atlantic/Pacific shipping would cut a ton of emissions.

It’s unfortunate but a global depression might be a good thing in that regard.

And yes, I too strongly dislike Trump as a human being

gehwartzen··on Is Ketamine Neurotoxic?
>PS. there are many other treatments that doctors will give you before reaching for the big guns; those can be very effective too.

This part can sometimes be difficult if you are in crisis. There’s lots of other options like you mention but they tend to take longer to see an effect. Ketamine can be very immediate in that regard. I remember it being like a light switch and thinking “wow this is how others must feel!”. And just seeing, even once, that it is at least chemically possible for your own brain to work/think like that can be very inspiring and hopeful esp when it feels like it hadn’t been worked correctly for a long time (or ever)

gehwartzen··on Why can't we remember our lives as babies or toddlers?
All of what you describe is probably a big part of why we don’t remember. Not only has the though encoding/decoding process not been developed sufficiently to remember things in the way we do when older but even if we did those memories would probably be horrific for the most part.
gehwartzen··on How to improve your WFH lighting to reduce eye strain
Oh that’s good to know! Yeah, I definitely didn’t do myself any favors trying it with just a cheap unadjustable iron. I didn’t so much desolder the existing LEDs but instead just melted/scraped them off and cleaned the contacts. Was ugly for sure.

Do you by chance have any resources (videos or tutorials) to recommend that show how this is best done?

gehwartzen··on How to improve your WFH lighting to reduce eye strain
I happened to find someone on a German forum (cars a VW) that had taken his overheads apart to do the same thing who posted a p/n or rather an industry size. I had never dealt with replacing SMD LEDs before but it seems there is an industry standard sizing that most adhere to. Just ordered a few in that size from Amazon and they worked. From what I remember most in that size were rated for similar voltages so seemed pretty universal. I imagine as long as you can see the led and measure its dimensions finding a replacement should be easy.

Desoldering/soldering was a pain as they were tiny; like 2mmx2mm. One cool thing I learned though is that you can use a multimeter in its ‘continuity’ setting to provide enough current to light up these small LEDs which is very convenient when testing if you soldered them correctly.

gehwartzen··on How to improve your WFH lighting to reduce eye strain
Absolutely! That was my initial idea as well. Glad to know it’s an option
gehwartzen··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
Yup. And just for some context regarding guns at the time; during the years Silk Road was active it was perfectly legal for me (in the state of Virginia) to buy a gun from another citizen cash in hand without ever showing an ID, filling out a BoS, or any paperwork whatsoever.

I have a 4k projector setup which I use from time to time instead of my regular 27” monitor. It makes a pretty big difference especially as it is reflected light. I can sit in front of it for hours without any noticeable eye strain.

It’s fine for doing graphical work or web browsing but really not ideal for things like code or excel as I lose my place too often with my eyes having to dart around further. Might just be sitting too close though.

gehwartzen··on How to improve your WFH lighting to reduce eye strain
I just went through this with my car. All the OEM overhead interior lights were horrible 6000k+ type bulbs that not only made the interior feel like a hospital room but completely ruined my night vision turning me into the classic “Jesus!! You’re going to kill someone!” dad whenever my kids would fiddle with them at night.

I cannot overstate how much of a difference it made switching them all to 3000k warm whites. Of course instead of being replaceable bulbs they were all SMDs directly soldered onto little PCBs making it a bit of a project … but so worth it!

gehwartzen··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
Really beautifully said. Wealth does indeed carry the responsibility of giving back to your community the same way the community gave to you to gain the wealth to begin with.

Bettering your community not only benefits the receiver but also, I strongly believe, one’s own conscious and sense of belonging to said community.

gehwartzen··on Does current AI represent a dead end?
The way most of the world is setup we will need to first address the unprecedented crisis of financing our day to day lives. We figure that out and I’m sure people will find other sources of meaning in their lives.

The people that truly enjoy their work and obtain meaning from it are vastly over represented here on HN.

Very few would be scared of AI if they had a financial stake in its implementation.

gehwartzen··on Decline in teen drug use continues, surprising experts
Of course they will. But that’s is programming. Nurturing, socializing, teaching… all of it is programming. I’m not placing any negative connotations on the word. I’m not sure why you don’t view those things as programming?
gehwartzen··on Decline in teen drug use continues, surprising experts
So if babies are ignored and raised in isolation they still grow up with normal social skills? I think it’s fairly clear that socialization is learned (a term which I think is equivalent to programmed in this context) and not something as innate (or “in our nature”) as breathing.
gehwartzen··on Decline in teen drug use continues, surprising experts
And our kids will warn their kids about how the ‘direct to brain’ type interface they will use is rotting their brains. Each generation will have been a little correct along the way; the harm at each step was just always gentle enough to not scold the frogs too quickly.
gehwartzen··on MIT study explains why laws are written in an incomprehensible style
I agree with your second point about intentionality of the law. I would love to see strict requirements that new laws should have sections explaining: -the intention in writing the law. -societal and economic situation that lead to it being needed. -what measurable outcomes the law should achieve in x years

gehwartzen··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
After seemingly acting so carefully right before and after the shooting I’m perplexed as to why he had so much evidence still on him (Gun/silencer, Fake ID, manifesto) during the arrest. One would think he would have discarded or destroyed those things as soon as possible after the incident.

gehwartzen··on Studies suggest a drug-free nasal spray could ward off respiratory infections
Same here. I find saline sprays and saline netipot solutions to be very effective at preventing infections of taking hold.

If you want to boost the effectiveness I’ve found a few drops op goldenseal extract also helps. It contains Berberine which is a mild antibacterial.

gehwartzen··on Is My Blue Your Blue?
A few interesting wiki reads on the subject:

gehwartzen··on Is My Blue Your Blue?
You could look at it as “How much yellow do I have to add to my blue until I no longer consider it blue and instead consider it turquoise”
gehwartzen··on An Age of Hyperabundance
This is generally my impression as well. It's interesting that right now is still a ton of novel "big' and "small" data sets that the algorithms use to further and further refine the models. But a greater and greater share of that output (the median) will then become the new input as things head forward (i.e right now there is some small percentage of art, images, etc that are AI generated that are resubmitted by users to the web and eventually fed back into new AI image generators, that percentage will grow and grow). Where that semi-closed feedback loop ends up is anyone's guess.

If you trained a model on what human faces looked like exclusively based on images generated in the 80-90s and compared it to models trained on pictures taken in the 10s-20s you might come away thinking that humans have somehow esthetically become more "beautiful" over that time frame if you didn't account for the use of filters (which at this point are practically baked in) as one example.

gehwartzen··on Mourning and moving on: rituals for leaving a career (2014)
I was going to reply to a go further up but yes this has absolutely crept into many other technical areas. I had a similar grad school as others here have expressed but I didn’t stay in academia after school.

I’ve worked the past 15 years or so for several different F100 companies in various technical R&D functions. These companies manufacture real things and generally have labs, resources, and staff that rival but the very best academic institutions. The politics and worldviews with which the MBAs have infect the technical teams with the last 20 or so years is palpable.

I know there used to be real in-depth research done; talking to the old timers and looking through old technical reports showed that to me. Doing that now will quickly get you RIFed. Now quickly getting to revenue and moving onto the next project is all that matters. Nothing is retained in classic 20-30 page technical reports that help build true institutional knowledge or even allow us to repeat projects based on the learnings from 2 years ago. If you are smart you quickly learn how to test and validate things to make whomever the customer is happy (following the $) while providing the bare minimum to the lawyers to make a specific marketing claim. In practice this means I’ve become very good at not opening certain doors during research (ie the ones that I intuitively know have a high likelihood of derailing a project) even if they probably should have been. See no evil, hear no evil…

It’s sad.
